i actually started off playing fingerstyle (which i will use every now and again) but i found it much harder to learn with a pick (which i use more anyway)

Any average bass player could step on to that stage and play a bass solo better than Jason Newstad. Newstad is good at one thing, banging his head. As a bassist I think Jason is a below agerage bass player. I don't know why he landed such good gigs. In a speed metal band like metalica, their isn't room for the bass player to do much but reinforce the grove. That solo was ameturish . He is one of the highest paid - non talented bassist out there, besides that bassist that was in Van Halen.
Seriously, I can play this, and it is amazingly simple, but Jason makes it sound brilliant. That's a good musician. No matter how simple it is, he can make it sound good. I'm nowhere as good as him. He was great...

he quit echobrain soon after quitting Metallica actually. He has been playing with a band called Voivod lateley. Actually not recently, he got crushed by a falling bass amp and hasnt been able to play bass for awhile.
I remember voivod from the 80's. I was a fan. They were a lesser know band back then. Jason quit a multi million dollar band to join Echobrain and resurect a obscrue 80 band. He might as well go back to playing in a garage band
it wasnt just for echobrain. I think Jason used the echobrain arguement to get out of a band that he never felt accepted in. Jason said that he hated the hazing and he wasnt allowed to contribute anything to Metallica so thats why he really got into echobrain. He wanted to get his musical ideas out elsewhere.
Give Jason alot of credit for accepting the job of being Cliff's replacement...and although I think Cliff was the better Bassist...Jason didnt deserve the shit he got from James and the rest of them.

I don't see how either using a pick or fingers makes you a better / worse player. I grew up playing with just fingers, but use a pick sometimes for soundreasons (and find it way more difficult too). But you are right about Cliff being half the band! Good comment.

Jason is a very great bass player, and I think they (Newsted, Burton and Trujillo) have differents aproaches in the way they play bass. None of them play similar. Anyway, it's a waste of time arguing who is the best. Come on! They are all part of Metallica, so the have to be good musicians and great bass performers to be part of such successful band.
Fact is he can play all of Burtons work and playing a metal with a pick is harder because you have to get alt picking down perfectly. I would really like to see someone who says Newsted sucks play Battery or Master of Puppets with a pick before they say Newsted sucks
I disagree with that, Trujillo is an awesome bass player, have you heard Infectious Grooves? They're funk rock, and he hits some really sweet bass lines. Check it out.

There's no reason to keep Jason from soloing. Doing so gives the other guys a chance to take a break, grab a drink, whatever...not to mention it gives people a chance to see what Jason could do.
He explained that while learning to play his first bass he had no amp. To make the sound audible, he played with a pick and used a heavy downstroke that physically starts from his shoulder"the movement comes from the shoulder and involves the whole arm" nd not his wrist, which led to not only his unique tone and sound but a strength and consistency in his right-hand picking technique which leads to Jason hitting the strings at the exact same area on every single stroke. fuck up
I have to say I do like this solo. Metallica's music has gone a bit downhill and everyone seems to blame it on jason. He is a good bassist, one of the best pickers ever. I still prefer cliff though.

The difference is that cliff went to music school since he was 11 learning classical piano and bass, jason taught himself by playing along to black sabbath records on an electric bass without an amp, hence the pick so he could hear himself! Jasons came naturally, cliffs mum said cliff had no natural musical talent but had so mant teachers that he found his talent. They are allgood. Its not a competition!

Fact is he can play all of Burtons work and playing a metal with a pick is harder because you have to get alt picking down perfectly. I would really like to see someone who says Newsted sucks play Battery or Master of Puppets with a pick before they say Newsted sucks

I disagree with that, Trujillo is an awesome bass player, have you heard Infectious Grooves? They're funk rock, and he hits some really sweet bass lines. Check it out.

Ok, real quick. Let me lay my foot down, Jason is a great bassist. I love Newsted. Not as much as Cliff tho, Cliff and Robert are great, but Jason had his own greatness. Long story short, this bass solo sucked ass. It was too repetitive

cus bass soloing was kinda cliffs thing. and like they hazed him so hard the entire time he wa in metallica. Letting him have solos is kinda like moving on with cliff and letting jason take his place, which they were determined not to do. what do you mean no reason?

There's no reason to keep Jason from soloing. Doing so gives the other guys a chance to take a break, grab a drink, whatever...not to mention it gives people a chance to see what Jason could do.

He explained that while learning to play his first bass he had no amp. To make the sound audible, he played with a pick and used a heavy downstroke that physically starts from his shoulder"the movement comes from the shoulder and involves the whole arm" nd not his wrist, which led to not only his unique tone and sound but a strength and consistency in his right-hand picking technique which leads to Jason hitting the strings at the exact same area on every single stroke. fuck up

I have to say I do like this solo. Metallica's music has gone a bit downhill and everyone seems to blame it on jason. He is a good bassist, one of the best pickers ever. I still prefer cliff though.

The difference is that cliff went to music school since he was 11 learning classical piano and bass, jason taught himself by playing along to black sabbath records on an electric bass without an amp, hence the pick so he could hear himself! Jasons came naturally, cliffs mum said cliff had no natural musical talent but had so mant teachers that he found his talent. They are allgood. Its not a competition!

that is a lie the part with cliffs mom said cliff has no natural talents! he never makes solos.if you want to hear best bass solo search cliff burton trauma bass solo. trauma is his old band before metallica. it has drums and bass with wah distorsion. james and lars went to a trauma concert and where like asome guitar shreding! but it was the bass.cliff was in metallica next day.resan they wanted jason becoz he was in band called diamond head.how play without a amp he was in a band?
