  • Hey, it's good to see a new member to the multitracker community - welcome!

Your recording sounds nice. The volume is a little low, though and there is a lot of white noise. When you sing so quietly you should turn up your mic sensitivity or come closer to the mic. That should help a little - despite of your poor equipment. And remember to always apply dynamic compression and of course normalization to your recordings to make them louder. And you should apply some stereo panning.

  • Hey, thanks! I would turn up the mic sensitivity, but as it is, it is already picking up too much AC and computer hum, since its a laptop. I cant WAIT to get a mic. I have no idea what dynamic compression is or how to apply normalization. By panning, do you mean split the parts to different speakers?

  • Turning up the mic sensitivity would amplify your voice by the same amount like the fan's noise. So it wouldn't make the recording any noisier - just louder. And it would reduce the noise you have by not using the full dynamic range. So you should always set your sensitivity as high as you can without getting overshoots/distortions.

Normalization and dynamic compression are basic mastering steps to improve the volume which most audio programs provide. Normalization is really a must!

  • By stereo panning I mean for instance placing the tenor far to the left, the lead slightly to the left, the bass slightly to the right and the bari far to the right.

It greatly improves the illusion that you are listening to a real quartet.

Adding *a little* amount of reverb with *slightly* different setting for each track also helps to enhance this illusion.

    I hope that helps!
