First heard this on Radio Australia this morning, and have had the video on repeat since finding it on YT. Love it, love, it, love it. The RA announcer said Mr K is 57 today. Happy birthday, Paul.
this woulda charted higher if it had lynda stoner or delvene delaney , abigail, karen pini or judy green . many boys turned off after seeing that ugly trollop.lol.
@4evaweRkindasisters I'm a few years older than you, but I was about 12 or 13 when I first got into PK, parents always played To Her Door, and I bought Songs from the south and then I guess I fell for his story telling, the singing poet..... I still think How to make gravy is his best song, a great writer though, if you like PK, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie are the way too go.
I sometimes undervalue this song due to overfamiliarity. But while actually listening it's hard to hear it as anything less than a perfect pop song. The first line seems harsh, misanthropic, but it ends up being maybe the most optimistic unrequited love song in the history of the world.
Meanwhile the arrangement seems effortlessly, joyously 'correct' in every way without ever seeming hackneyed. The gtr solos, the middle 8, the girl vocal; everything's in exactly the right place. Masterful.
Amazing song... My very first concert was Paul Kelly opening up for The Smithereens at a hall on the Notre Dame campus.... I wish I could go back and see it again. This song has a place on my Top 20 of all time...
When we moved to the US from Oz one of the last things I did was buy a Paul Kelly CD to take with me as it is the one of the real sounds of Australia for me.
i didn't grow up when this come out but fuck i love this song! im 18 now but fuck i love the old music like this, i reckon it shits on the new stuff :)
A gorgeous tune. This was my 1st intro 2 his music. It was also the reason why I've stayed faithful 2 his music. Now, whenever I hear it, I have this natural impulse 2 cry... why? It is the perfect match between music & lyrics than either of those elements on their own. Like fellow 80s veteran Neil Finn (another enduring favorite), Paul Kelly is a born storyteller . He knows just how 2 paint a soundscape that beautifully depicts love, loss, & longing against a uniquely Australian sky.
You know what's annoying? A lot of people are using the saying "Every dog will have its day" as if it's a negative thing. Like you'll get what's coming to you... It's so annoying because then there are songs like this with "every dog will have its day, any dog can win" and they won't understand it!
The best Australian songwriter of all time. Harry Vanda and George Young would have given their left nuts to write beautiful lyrics like this. Friday on my mind was a great song but nowhere near near as melodic as this effort. Kelly is Australia's Sir Paul.
I grew up listening to this. I miss those days soooooo much. Australia was the bloody bestest country in the world. It's still the best for me but i's not the same. We had some wicked times then!!!!
Is'nt it wonderful to just listen and actually see a band making wonderful music. No need for bling,no girl with her boobs and arse hanging out gyrating around,no need to include an ethnic minority in the band,no filthy lyrics and no stupid meaningless video clip.Just a few blokes making pure and unadulterated music.

it was filmed around syndney in 86' depicting a typical day of a sydn ey taxi driver......ive heard kelly talk about it on jono colemans radio program
