Skidrow is sadly the most dense and interesting part of the game. It slowly devolves as you progress.

in game development it is called a trigger, when player enters a certain spots in the map a scripted sequence is then activated. in this case I guess AI is extremely scripted to make it look a bit smarter then they actually are :)

You gotta admit, this game's dialogue is top-notch, as if it was actually written by Quentin Tarantino. When you meet that one guy at the garage with all those dogs, he actually says, "I'll sick this thing up your ass and pull the fucking trigger till it goes click".

You should click to swing your pipe/crowbar at every 1/2 second instead of holding down the mouse button, you'll kill things faster and prevent retaliation.

I rarely use melee weapon. Usually i just brake containers to collect stuff.
