I've always adored WWI fighter planes, my favourite being the Fokker DR.I, followed very closely by the SE5a! Recently I too got to see the Fokker in action, because there was a historical Aircraft show here in Germany, not far from where I live. The sound alone gave me the shivers and to see the amazing maneouvers these things are able to fly was nothing short of spectacular. Thank you so much for sharing this, so I got to see them again^^
@ChicaWolverina . I beleive they are all full size replicas, the originals were not big aircraft, check out the full size specs. wingspan is 23 ft 7 3/8 in (7.19 m) ...
No I don't think these planes were originals, although they do get some very rare originals at this airshow. There are some very good accurate replicas.
@Kahu1958 The only two remaining DR-1s were on display in Berlin and were destroyed by Allied bombing during WW2. I feel the best part of the collection, was the creation of Wingnut Wings 1/32 scale models in Welington. They are inexspensive and beautifully done.
I love these planes but i'm sorry my mind is in the gutter: "Here come the Fokkers" "Meet the Fokkers" "Never since World War 1 have this many Fokkers been seen in the air together" lmfaooooooo
When the announcer says this is the first time in History since 1918 that this many Fokkers were in the air, well he's dead wrong. Frank Ryder's airshows in 1992 and 1994 in Alabama both had more tripes than this.
That is amazing to see. I can't get over how able the Kiwis get so many brilliant vintage aircraft in the air (thinking of the Russian fighters as well).
Thanks for posting this. These planes are fun to watch. There's a 9 hour WWI doc that's been running through March on the Military Channel that is very good.
There's another airshow there this easter I believe. I was looking at a tour that included 3 days at the show and a brief tour of the highlights of the South Island.
These are modified WWI fighters, the original ones where too dengarous to fly, many people dont realize but unstable fighters have the most manueverable capabilities.
Original WWI fighters where so unstable, theres film of them doing 360's within less then a 20 feet space & doing it while moving in one direction, fighters these days could only dream of doing that but then again such manuevers are actually useless lol.
moving to the Philippines where there is lots of craftsman and high quality timber available at great prices any aircraft builders out there with experiance building
WW1 aircraft interested in building airframes for the world market.
Die Show hätte ich auch gerne gesehen, ich wusste nicht, dass noch so viele Replikas des Dr.I fliegen. Die "others" genannten Flugzeuge sind übrigens eine Nieuport XI, Fokker D.VII und Pfalz D.VII
It was awesome being there and video barely captures a fraction of it. There were planes all over the sky, a ground battle re-enactment, the sound was awesome, fantastic atmosphere.
Nice show, one of the best 58.

I love the seeing the scarf fluttering in the wind. It's like a scene taken right out of history. Great video!
stang46l 3 years ago 4
The silk scarf was to protect the neck. The pilot was continually looking around for enemy aircraft, and the scarf prevent chafing.

And what about the film "the blue max !) That was full of fokkers in the air
sickbuffalo 3 years ago
Bluye max movie had exactly 1 Dr1 triplane ...not 8
MK2YT 3 years ago
@sickbuffalo Except for the DR-1 replicas all of the 'Fokkers' in the "Blue Max" were WW2 de Havilland Tiger Moth Trainers.

Can these engines be original ? or are they modern engines ?
sickbuffalo 4 years ago
I think they are modern radial engines. I don't think they're rotaries. They are reproduction Dr.1's, not original.
