Good grief, why do people still trot out the same old crap about Dmingo being a baritone? I promise you-he's a tenor!!!!
I'm a high baritone and although the actual range difference is slight in notes, there is a world of difference in being able night after night to sing tenor than there is to singing baritone. He is a flipping tenor. And an incredible one!!!!
I heard a joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life is harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. The great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor... I am Pagliacci." Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.
Or you're deaf, dont know, dont like Domingo at all or are envious my friend, no way, hes the best Canio and Otello of all times, this clip shows what im saying clearly
Simply im Plácidos fan since ever, even when he does not that well, I defend his work because he deserves all glory, in few days (september 9th) i will stand in front of the stage for giving him my admiration turned into some flowers.
You're right about one thing-- he's a baritone that CAN sing dramatic tenor. As far as your second comment goes--> If he has no business singing then how come he was voted best tenor in the world by a panel of the most respected opera critics in the world? Chew on that tasty morsel for a while...
He is not a baritone. He is a tenor. And my comment was that he has no business singing OTELLO. I did not say he has no business singing at all. Get it right if you are going to comment. Secondly, I could care less what he was voted as by the public. There is not alot to choose from now days anyway. If a million people say a stupid thing it is still a stupid thing.
@DTGeek155 I would not be incline to say they were all world respected opera critics at all. They are based on business and how many people Placido has attracted the attention to so then he is the best not doubt, and the best on singing what he should not as well he is the best and the best on transposing down from the very beginning of his career yes his is the best on that too.
CANIO No!
Yo tengo gustos diferentes... Me fascinan Pavarotti, Larin, Vickers, Carreras... Y Domingo por supuesto... Para todos es mi corazon... Jijiji ;)
Enrico Caruso invented the role of Canio; Placido Domingo re-invented it. A lot of good tenors have acted in the role of Canio (sometimes doubling up with Canio/Turiddu in CavPag productions).
I first saw Pagliacci live a week or two ago with the operatic heartthrob Jose Cura as Canio (a reason why us gals love opera...lol) and that guy has a POWERFUL voice...and I do mean POWERFUL!
However, Domingo's performance outshines all, even Caruso and Pavarotti.
Jesus the emotion Domingo displays as Canio gives me shivers....so dramatic and what a powerful voice. I prefer Teresa Stratas in the role of Nedda though....I agree Viva Domingo!
EXCELENTE!!! Una de sus mejores interpretaciones de Canio!! Con una energía única y un modo de expresar sensaciones que pocos lograron alcanzar, eso lo hace único.
Domingo seems to be a very emotional tenor. He just doesn't stand up and sing like someone else mentioned here. He is active in the role.
I've watched YouTube clips of him in the "No Pagliaccio non so" scenes and (every time) at the very end of the opera, he is always seen breaking out into tears (Cura's Canio, from what I saw, just stood there and said "the comedy is over").
You can see the raw emotion just oozing out of him.
un dios tambien en el mundo de la opera

Agreed. Othello was the first opera I saw staring Domingo, very good. Domingos Canio is just way creepy, hurt and crazy. He does it well.

Very secure singing and impassioned acting. Domingo is not a "stand and sing" tenor. He loves the drama.
