I think it's sort of beautiful that the Eric is black in this version, and it's never questioned. Sure, he looks a bit different from the cartoon, but it certainly has no effect on how Ariel feels for him or how anyone else treats him in the story. (heck Grimsby was tall and skinny in the cartoon but he's not here). It quietly shows children that skin color doesn't and shouldn't make a difference when in comes to love or who a person is, and children learn by example :)

For one, I have no problem with mixing in different races, but wouldn't it be considered "black-washing" what they did to the Frog Prince story, so if there was a Broadway version, would it be a crime to have a white girl, since there were white people in New Orleans who were poor? It's not "political correctness" but "colourblind casting", the principle that if ethnicity is not a key part to the role being played (i.e. Like Othello) then anyone should be able to play it provided they demonstrate the most talent..
