Actually there's an excellent book about how this state of affairs came about. Darned if I can remember the name though -- sorry about that. Basically (as I recall), corporate personhood came about because of a footnote in a summary of a case before an appellate court. It wasn't something a judge did -- but it's now considered law simply because it's been practiced long enough. (It's been years, so I may have gotten this a bit mixed up.)
