I've done Shaolin kung fu for two years, and I've practiced the stance literally every class as an exercise, but I'm not sure how to use it in a fight? Is it just an opening stance that you use to switch to other stances or is there a direct attack you can achieve from it?
@TrackRange It's parallel or slightly inward. In Wing Chun practitioners actually stand pigeon toed in their variation of Horse stance. Honestly, you'll /see/ people doing all kinds of angles -- the other ExpertVillage videos for Horse Stance are better than this one, I feel. Particularly: watch?v=g0s2dx3BRQs
@mrcooki3 thats cuz mabu is horse stance... ma = horse bu = stance... and yes it is very weak. his knees are protruding forward too far, his feet were nowhere near parallel, and it all together looked sloppy.
The dude's head is too far forward; his spine is not vertical, so his centre of gravity is too far forward, and he is compensating by moving his knees over his toes (which is something not advised by the speaker)
ERIME is right also hes feet are not forward which is teached to me that u gotta have your hole foot facing forward not at an angle other wise its not the kung fu horse stance
I would have agreed with you when I wrote my previous comment, but since training it myself, and getting an injury by forcing the feet parallel, I have found that it seems AT FIRST you've got to have the feet pointing outwards, and only once the hips have opened more, then the feet can be made to face perfectly forwards. This is is for Western people, anyway; it seems Chinese people squat a lot more in their daily lives and this makes their hips more open.
@TheWushu666 ya it is easier to force the toes out like he is doing, but it weakens the stance. by pulling the toes in so the feet are parallel it forces you to engage your outer quadriceps, which strengthen the stance from outside attacks. good eyes
You DO realize this guy is a professional. I seriously doubt that they would have this posted as an instructional video. And I am pretty sure the knows what he is talking about.
yea but the hole point of kung fu is addapting to make you stronger the stances are ment to be strong where as this guys horse stance ( mabu ) looks week and could easily be taken down with a sweep.

@WakaTakaB you can use it to get down which would lead to a powerful strike from below, but it wouldn't be as graceful or as slow as in practicing xD

@Erime
Perhaps it explains why he did not say "this is the proper way of performing the horse stance", as he usually does!
