@joshuaebb yup, a lionhead mix. I believe McPei was probably a Lionhead / dwarf mix, and Parsley a Lionhead / Jersey Wooly mix. I'd adopted them both from local rescue, so it was hard to get confirmation for my guesses. They were lovely, and a central part of our family.
My rabbit (poppy) dose this some times its nothing to with being mistreated in earlier life its do with the fact your moving to fast or they can't see your hand. Never ball your hand up its a sign of aggression and always touch the head first then the body. And don't associate being picked up with cutting nails only associate it with cuddles and spending time with you.
You need to tell him off, he want it his way, got one who was the cutest little nutred male on his own, but as soon his female was around he tried to attack me and did bite me once, I started telling him off, not shouting but a firm NO, that stopped him in his track, then just put my hand in to fix stuff, as soon he attacked he got a NO, when he was nice I scratched him behind his ears, He stopped now you don't need 3 toilets make sure to remove smell with Rodalon, works on carpets and floors,

it does take time to adjust, and different rabbits adjust differently. if you keep them in a cage, they are far more likely to charge you when you approach. a home made bunny condo or pen is a much better choice. you can make them with the metal wire squares, sold at Target, i think. my rescue rabbit didn't even need to be litter trained. he just did it naturally, and so there was no reason to have any enclosure. of course you have to bunny proof your house/apartment.
@morganzable thanks... McPei (and Parsley) were in a pen - a pen equivalent to the size of our bedroom - making it necessary for us to "step in" for maintenance (cleaning and what not) and perhaps that made him feel like we were invading his "territory". This video was taken when he was very new to us anyways. he was more or less litter trained when he came altho we still kept no fewer than 3 litter boxes all over his pen for his choosing.
Mine used to growl a lot, but other times she'd flop onto me for a cuddle, then bloody claw me to death so now I look like a self harmer, then she'd hop about after you and snuggle up with you, I swear she was bipolar or something O_O
I know this video is some three to four years old, but anyone who is looking at this and wondering how to deal with an aggressive rabbit, you can find some good help on the House Rabbit Society web site.
But remember: rabbits are highly social and hierarchical animals. They *like* to be the boss, and they can be nasty when they are. You be the boss, and be a kind one.
That's not necessarily true. Rabbits who were abused may do this, but so may rabbits who were just not properly socialized, or are alphaish and were given what I call "unintentional pitbull training."
By repeatedly reaching for and then shying away from him when he bites at you, you're teaching him that he can show aggression to you and get desired results. Not good. You need to show a rabbit that you are alpha by, when he does this, picking him up and holding him against belly facing away.
@aaardvarkkk awww :-( that's so sad. We adopted him from a nice young woman (who lived with her boyfriend when they first got the bunny). I believe they had bought the rabbit from a store instead of from Rescue - coz they actually ID'd the sex wrong and gave him an initial girl name. Wouldn't have happened with Rescue as they'd have proper vet services up front.
My rabbit does something similar, but it's just because she's unnaturally scared of heights. Except, most of what she does is jump away whenever we try and pick her up for one reason or another.
You're a dickface. Why would you say that? All bunnies do that. Bunnies are absolutely terrified of heights. If you give a bunny any indication that you are about to pick them up or grab them and move them in any way, they will always growl and attempt to resist as much as possible. Some bunnies will tolerate heights, most won't
@aaardvarkkk I can assure you my bun hasn't been abused at all, I got him at the age of 5 weeks, orphaned, and had to raise him myself. I can pick him up, walk around with him and he'll not even jump out of an open travelbox when I tell him to, which shows lots of trust in me, but when Sir has a bad mood, he'll charge anyone and anything getting close to 'his' carpet, even a grown German Shepherd.
@MsGrimGirl Mine frightens my dog too (and it's supposed to be a dog specialised in hunting foxes and rabbits) ^_^ Despite their size and cuteness, rabbits are truly terrible ^_^
Teehee, he knows what your up to and he hates it. I have 4 bunnies and they can tell when I'm up to something like, a manicure, trip to the vet. Probably my tone of voice, body language. It's all over me and they know....IT IS TIME! RUN! Hahaha.
@tusanity don't worry - if you love them, they can tell. McPei (and Parsley) were the angels in our lives once we showed them how much we loved them, and they got some time to adjust to us. Afterall, we adopted them when they were already adults, not babies.
@MrFuzzleFilms he did growl in there.... sorry for the stupid title. It (the title) was originally meant as an inside joke to my uncle who's overseas, for whom i'd uploaded this video to youtube coz it was too big to email it to him. I'd never thought this would snowball like this...
@Elderunlimited9 LOL, adopted him via the local rabbit rescue - from a single lady who's gonna be leaving the country and can't take the bunn with her. My Parsley (female) had been lonely by herself so we took them out for a date, not love at first sight for them but they grew to become inseparable after some coached bonding by the Rescue :-D
my bunny would only bite if someone is eating chocolate, idk but i think my rabbit went insane at the smell of chocolate it once stole a snickers from me and ran for it haha xD
Alas that was the past, my bunny has passed at the age of 7 :(
my bunny doesnt like to get picked up either.. But in the morning he loves getting pet(ed id?!) I think my rabbit is maybe a little bit sad :/ (he's 6 years old) He runs around in our garden all day (ca. 500m2) Our neibers got 1 rabbit t. In summer theyare always together but in winter he's alone :( (we dont "buy" a second rabbit becaus ewe think he would attack hi or her)
@1mikuhatsune1 aw your bunny is lucky that he's got the backyard to run around. The local rabbit rescue taught us a few tricks when we were trying to find a mate for Parsley - altho she was never very territorial to start. If you've found a potential mate, u can have them meet in a neutral place separated by a fence so they can sniff each other, let them live next to each other for 2 to 4 weeks before mixing them. Rabbit Rescue will help u not pet stores :-D good luck to ur bunny!
my family has had alot of pet rabbits and we let them run around in my backyard free and roaming lol but when we pick them up, we pick them up like dogs, by the neck. and its just fine :)
@nerdilieHK aww that's cute. We didn't dare let our rabbits run in our backyard - my friend did that, and eye-witnessed their rabbit being grabbed in the teeth by a wild animal (they were too shocked to determine whether it was a racoon or a coyote) - and they lived in the city.... NOT rural places!
You are trying to go for him too slowly. I know this video is from 2008 but...if you are still having issues, the best thing I've found to do is just start petting the rabbit's head, then once he's settled down, gently but firmly pick him up with one arm while your other hand is still over his face. And always give a treat during and after! :)
@BrennendeDerErde thanks - we really appreciate it :-) McPei has since passed away, and unfortunately we never got our groove with how to pick him up for manicures, but with our other bunny Parsley, yeah i think what you suggested was what ended up working for us, although we weren't very methodical about it. but essentially we ended up half-covering her face the times that worked :-)
@corazonazul75 :-) thanks. i think people were judging ... from a 51 second clip, how they think we're treating our rabbit, living arrangements etc. when they can't even see more than a CORNER of the area we reserved for our rabbit. Oh well. when people post something youtube, you'll always have to be prepared for all sorts of reactions, justified or not. *shrugs*. it used to bug me, but not anymore :-) there are lots of kind comments up here too :-)
@azraninja3 cute! sorry youtube automatically marked your comment as "spam" - i've manually un-spammed it. Love the song you picked :-) how old is Lissa?
@beautifulstar33 not at all. we only got bitten once by each of our two rabbits - one of them was captured on this video. The other one bit me as a warning in the beginning of our "relationship" but she grew to like me and never did anything close to that again :-)
@baldtomato so then do rabbits bite less than cats? I am trying to decide between a rabbit and a guinea pig, and ppl tell me how rabbits bite a lot, how they chew everything up, etc. what do u say?
@beautifulstar33 um, i'm not sure how to compare them - i'm DEFINITELY not a cat person LOL, and i've never had a guinea pig. Rabbits DO like to bite wires and chew up stuff - flyers, mail, the bottom layer of your fake paper-based christmas tree, anything orange that sticks out of your workbag (they think it's a fruit) etc etc so you just have to manage around that accordingly - give them enough to chew. We didn't have too much problems past the first year after we figured out the tricks :-)
@beautifulstar33 rabbits, definitely rabbits LOL. Their claws aren't as sharp (although you absolutely CANNOT de-claw a rabbit, please don't even think about that!). They can be aloof like cats, but they are easier to entice - even when they are trying to play "cool" - you can make them forget their cool with a just tiny piece of apple, and you become their best friend again LOL. Rabbits also purr, when you give them a good massage. and i'm just a little creeped out by cats' eyes, sometimes.
@beautifulstar33 most bunnies don't travel well - i think cats are definitely more hardy - they are predators, afterall. I know there are people (even with youtube proof) who take their bunnies for a ride on their motorbikes.... but there's a reason why they are on the "news" coz it's not common. I've only taken Parsley out in a carrier when we had to go to the vet, and the two times we had a fire alarm, so i guess she had some negative association with "traveling" LOL
@beautifulstar33 yeah first time she was so scared she barely moved at all. Later times after she got used to my voice, as long as i kept talking to her softly while she was in the cage on my lap, her breathing remained calm (that's all i could see to tell if she was scared or just quiet and content). But i wouldn't take her out just for the heck of it, i don't think she liked it at all.
that thing it does which you think looks like a dog is simply an attack. it is easy to see that it feels very uncomfortable about the situation. Stressed bunny... :(
My rabbit used to do this in her old cage, but when we got her a new cage, she calmed down, and you can now do anything with her. So maybe try moving him to a new environment, and see if his temprement improves :)
@pinklollipop1000 thanks for your kind suggestion. McPei passed away a while ago - this video was taken when he first joined our family (we adopted him from a young woman who's leaving the country) - and he was understandably stressed. With time, he did calm down a bit, he LOVED his companion Parsley. Although he was still a bit more jumpy than Parsley ever was - but then Parsley was the laziest snobbiest queen :-)
thank you for staying with him! so many people just take them to a shelter or let them lose because they dont meet there expectations or cant "handle" them. UGH!
@PandaMoostash my two adopted bunnies are (were) like my kids (and i have a real human kid as well). We're lucky that McPei here had eventually grown to love us, after a few months of patience. Adopting them was one of the best and luckiest decisions we've made. :'-)
@MrTerrific197 yeah.... we were lucky both times (we got a total of two bites from two bunnies over a total of 12-bunny-years, not bad). didn't break skin both times - but ppl tell me they can bite hard enough to make you bleed. But both times were more a "warning" bite from our furry friends... it's a bit LESS painful than when i got bitten by my lab rat in college....
@djsdfjjsJR my bun is begging to be picked up now you turd. he keeps jumping on my lap and when i put him down he licks my feet and tries to climb back up, only an ass believes rabbits dont enjoy being picked up, whatever site you read that on isnt credible. rabbits have been domesticated for a long time. many rabbits grunt or "bark" usagi, my bunny does it all the time, it all depends on their personality as to why they do it. Usagi does it for attention, theirs may do it for another reason.
@beautifulstar33 none of mine have, although my last rabbit got scared during a power outage and bit my septum(up one's nose, the cartilage between your nostrils) and it bled but it didnt hurt, had it been in a less sensitive area, i doubt it would have bled even. but no in general rabbits DO NOT bite.
@beautifulstar33 they like to snuggle their heads under your chin and cuddle and stuff. and mine likes to rub his chin against things? any rabbit ive had also likes to look you in the eyes, almost like a human! the ways of showing affection are different for each rabbit, they have personalites! my last rabbit liked to sleep in my bed but other than that was very independent when we werent cuddling, my current rabbit likes to follow me nonstop everywhere i go like a duckling.
@beautifulstar33 bunnies dont stop cuddling if theyre raised right lol mine travels fine, he has a blanket that he likes to be swaddled like a baby in and if i swaddle him and hold him he'll be fine on long car trips. he also doesnt mind his carrier and even takes in town rides in a purse! muchh less noisey than cats, the most noise they make is a "helicopter noise" i call it, which is an intense nasal purring noise when theyre calm and happy or grunting both are very faint.
@beautifulstar33 usagi likes to be carried around, he could be carried around for hours! but on typical if im not HOLDING him and hes next to me snuggling, maybe 1/2 an hour, he's very active. although my last rabbit, who was a female and a larger breed was much calmer and would do all night cuddlers in my bed with me. as for car rides, about 3 hours i would say, to the shore, we stayed at my grandmother's house so we didnt have to worry about expensive hotels that take pets.
@beautifulstar33 idk i put him in front with the door open and he hops in and i close it. and yes, she did snuggle with me all night. the female actually enjoyed the carrier she took naps in there during the day
@beautifulstar33 idk i put him in front with the door open and he hops in and i close it. and yes, she did snuggle with me all night. the female actually enjoyed the carrier she took naps in there during the day
maybe you hurt him because song bunny is like that i have desert hare she is cute but sometimes she is mad at me because i don tlike to play with him but now my bunny love me i sleep with him on my bed and all so he has own nice cage and he's name "Browny"because he is brown with white and black my mom choose that name
@MrPandaPancakes haha we are Asian but not Vietnamese. You're like the 3rd or 4th commentor to say that it sounded like Vietnamese we were speaking though. Strange. I don't speak Vietnamese so i can't tell in what way we sounded like it
@Crayontacular nah, that was the first bit when we adopted him. He never liked his manicures but was more friendly to us. He passed away 2 years ago :-( broke my heart, i have his ashes and pawprint.
@dumecawi that wasn't a "jail"... it was a carted off area that's like 600 square feet.... the size of many PEOPLE's whole apartment. Those people would be appalled if you tell them their apartment is small like a "jail".
@baldtomato sorry for my bad english, where u put it , is a jail, coz its very small, not your apartment... i told u , i had one , once he got stressed and one time bit me... =/
@dumecawi no no, my HOUSE is 3000 sq ft, where we put the rabbits... is 600 sq feet space all to themselves. in the evenings we open up the fence and they run free upstairs as well. This video is only showing the CORNER of his 600 sq ft where two of us were trying to get up to get up to the table for nail-trimming.
He doesn't like your hand reaching into "his" space, which is why he grunts. They don't like having their hindquarters touched by unfamiliar hands because that's a bit of a blind spot, & i noticed that's where you were reaching first. If offer your hand to a rabbit just to one side of his nose or the other (where he can see / sniff you best) he'll put his head down to have his head petted. To him that means he's in control & you are the submissive one. Once he calms he'll let you handle him.
@oxymephorous thanks - yeah, we've learned a lot about Rabbit-speake in the last few years (since this video) - it's fascinating and fun. We've been doing much better since then.
Rabbit that bites = kill it. ANY animal that bites you will do so again and I don't care how cute it is.

BrennendeDerErde 1 month ago
@BrennendeDerErde thanks - we really appreciate it :-) McPei has since passed away, and unfortunately we never got our groove with how to pick him up for manicures, but with our other bunny Parsley, yeah i think what you suggested was what ended up working for us, although we weren't very methodical about it. but essentially we ended up half-covering her face the times that worked :-)

Awww he's so cute my bunny cracks me up her name is Daisy and she thinks she's part dog, part cat part something lol

Why are there so many dislikes? what's so wrong about wanting to domesticate your pet rabbit? -_-
corazonazul75 1 month ago 28
@corazonazul75 :-) thanks. i think people were judging ... from a 51 second clip, how they think we're treating our rabbit, living arrangements etc. when they can't even see more than a CORNER of the area we reserved for our rabbit. Oh well. when people post something youtube, you'll always have to be prepared for all sorts of reactions, justified or not. *shrugs*. it used to bug me, but not anymore :-) there are lots of kind comments up here too :-)

Do rabbits bite often?
beautifulstar33 2 months ago
@beautifulstar33 not at all. we only got bitten once by each of our two rabbits - one of them was captured on this video. The other one bit me as a warning in the beginning of our "relationship" but she grew to like me and never did anything close to that again :-)
baldtomato 2 months ago
@baldtomato so then do rabbits bite less than cats? I am trying to decide between a rabbit and a guinea pig, and ppl tell me how rabbits bite a lot, how they chew everything up, etc. what do u say?
beautifulstar33 2 months ago
@beautifulstar33 um, i'm not sure how to compare them - i'm DEFINITELY not a cat person LOL, and i've never had a guinea pig. Rabbits DO like to bite wires and chew up stuff - flyers, mail, the bottom layer of your fake paper-based christmas tree, anything orange that sticks out of your workbag (they think it's a fruit) etc etc so you just have to manage around that accordingly - give them enough to chew. We didn't have too much problems past the first year after we figured out the tricks :-)
baldtomato 2 months ago
@baldtomato which do u prefer & why: rabbits or cats?
beautifulstar33 2 months ago
@beautifulstar33 rabbits, definitely rabbits LOL. Their claws aren't as sharp (although you absolutely CANNOT de-claw a rabbit, please don't even think about that!). They can be aloof like cats, but they are easier to entice - even when they are trying to play "cool" - you can make them forget their cool with a just tiny piece of apple, and you become their best friend again LOL. Rabbits also purr, when you give them a good massage. and i'm just a little creeped out by cats' eyes, sometimes.
baldtomato 2 months ago
@baldtomato so if they don't want to stay on your lap, can petting them entice them to stay longer? which are easier to travel with, bunnies or cats?
beautifulstar33 2 months ago
@beautifulstar33 most bunnies don't travel well - i think cats are definitely more hardy - they are predators, afterall. I know there are people (even with youtube proof) who take their bunnies for a ride on their motorbikes.... but there's a reason why they are on the "news" coz it's not common. I've only taken Parsley out in a carrier when we had to go to the vet, and the two times we had a fire alarm, so i guess she had some negative association with "traveling" LOL
baldtomato 2 months ago
@baldtomato do rabbits panic when put into a cage for a car ride to the vet? I know cats HATE car rides and being in cages
beautifulstar33 2 months ago
@beautifulstar33 yeah first time she was so scared she barely moved at all. Later times after she got used to my voice, as long as i kept talking to her softly while she was in the cage on my lap, her breathing remained calm (that's all i could see to tell if she was scared or just quiet and content). But i wouldn't take her out just for the heck of it, i don't think she liked it at all.

that thing it does which you think looks like a dog is simply an attack. it is easy to see that it feels very uncomfortable about the situation. Stressed bunny... :(
EmilieMaersk 2 months ago
My rabbit used to do this in her old cage, but when we got her a new cage, she calmed down, and you can now do anything with her. So maybe try moving him to a new environment, and see if his temprement improves :)
pinklollipop1000 2 months ago
@pinklollipop1000 thanks for your kind suggestion. McPei passed away a while ago - this video was taken when he first joined our family (we adopted him from a young woman who's leaving the country) - and he was understandably stressed. With time, he did calm down a bit, he LOVED his companion Parsley. Although he was still a bit more jumpy than Parsley ever was - but then Parsley was the laziest snobbiest queen :-)

@PandaMoostash my two adopted bunnies are (were) like my kids (and i have a real human kid as well). We're lucky that McPei here had eventually grown to love us, after a few months of patience. Adopting them was one of the best and luckiest decisions we've made. :'-)

does it hurt when they bite?
MrTerrific197 2 months ago
@MrTerrific197 yeah.... we were lucky both times (we got a total of two bites from two bunnies over a total of 12-bunny-years, not bad). didn't break skin both times - but ppl tell me they can bite hard enough to make you bleed. But both times were more a "warning" bite from our furry friends... it's a bit LESS painful than when i got bitten by my lab rat in college....
baldtomato 2 months ago
ur retarded my rabbit does that to because its a fact all rabbits hate being picked up
djsdfjjsJR 2 months ago
@djsdfjjsJR my bun is begging to be picked up now you turd. he keeps jumping on my lap and when i put him down he licks my feet and tries to climb back up, only an ass believes rabbits dont enjoy being picked up, whatever site you read that on isnt credible. rabbits have been domesticated for a long time. many rabbits grunt or "bark" usagi, my bunny does it all the time, it all depends on their personality as to why they do it. Usagi does it for attention, theirs may do it for another reason.

@jinxxblakkout do rabbits bite a lot? do their bites hurt?
beautifulstar33 2 months ago
@beautifulstar33 none of mine have, although my last rabbit got scared during a power outage and bit my septum(up one's nose, the cartilage between your nostrils) and it bled but it didnt hurt, had it been in a less sensitive area, i doubt it would have bled even. but no in general rabbits DO NOT bite.
jinxxblakkout 2 months ago
@jinxxblakkout are vrabbits less affectionate than cats?
beautifulstar33 2 months ago
@beautifulstar33 rabbits are deffinitely waaaaaay more affectionate than cats, mine is a total baby. he loves giving kisses.
jinxxblakkout 2 months ago
@jinxxblakkout how do they show love besides kissing
beautifulstar33 2 months ago
@beautifulstar33 they like to snuggle their heads under your chin and cuddle and stuff. and mine likes to rub his chin against things? any rabbit ive had also likes to look you in the eyes, almost like a human! the ways of showing affection are different for each rabbit, they have personalites! my last rabbit liked to sleep in my bed but other than that was very independent when we werent cuddling, my current rabbit likes to follow me nonstop everywhere i go like a duckling.
jinxxblakkout 2 months ago
@jinxxblakkout cool. do they still travel better than cats? lessnoise? Also, do they cuddle more than cats?
beautifulstar33 2 months ago
@beautifulstar33 bunnies dont stop cuddling if theyre raised right lol mine travels fine, he has a blanket that he likes to be swaddled like a baby in and if i swaddle him and hold him he'll be fine on long car trips. he also doesnt mind his carrier and even takes in town rides in a purse! muchh less noisey than cats, the most noise they make is a "helicopter noise" i call it, which is an intense nasal purring noise when theyre calm and happy or grunting both are very faint.
jinxxblakkout 2 months ago
@jinxxblakkout for how long on avg does he cudle with u? Whats the longest u've taken them on for a car ride?
beautifulstar33 2 months ago
@beautifulstar33 usagi likes to be carried around, he could be carried around for hours! but on typical if im not HOLDING him and hes next to me snuggling, maybe 1/2 an hour, he's very active. although my last rabbit, who was a female and a larger breed was much calmer and would do all night cuddlers in my bed with me. as for car rides, about 3 hours i would say, to the shore, we stayed at my grandmother's house so we didnt have to worry about expensive hotels that take pets.
jinxxblakkout 2 months ago
@jinxxblakkout how do u get them into the carriers for the car rides? is ti a huge struggle? did ur female rabbit snuggle with u all night?
beautifulstar33 2 months ago
@beautifulstar33 idk i put him in front with the door open and he hops in and i close it. and yes, she did snuggle with me all night. the female actually enjoyed the carrier she took naps in there during the day

dumecawi 3 months ago
@dumecawi that wasn't a "jail"... it was a carted off area that's like 600 square feet.... the size of many PEOPLE's whole apartment. Those people would be appalled if you tell them their apartment is small like a "jail".
baldtomato 3 months ago
@baldtomato sorry for my bad english, where u put it , is a jail, coz its very small, not your apartment... i told u , i had one , once he got stressed and one time bit me... =/
dumecawi 3 months ago
@dumecawi no no, my HOUSE is 3000 sq ft, where we put the rabbits... is 600 sq feet space all to themselves. in the evenings we open up the fence and they run free upstairs as well. This video is only showing the CORNER of his 600 sq ft where two of us were trying to get up to get up to the table for nail-trimming.

He doesn't think he's a dog dude, he just doesn't like you, he wants to b alone!
Yobyz1 3 months ago
He doesn't like your hand reaching into "his" space, which is why he grunts. They don't like having their hindquarters touched by unfamiliar hands because that's a bit of a blind spot, & i noticed that's where you were reaching first. If offer your hand to a rabbit just to one side of his nose or the other (where he can see / sniff you best) he'll put his head down to have his head petted. To him that means he's in control & you are the submissive one. Once he calms he'll let you handle him.
