Make sure yoshi can fight in battle, too! He could do:

(BUttons are DS example)

Flutter Kick/Jump. Jump and press A so mario jumps off yoshi.press yoshi's button (X 4 marios yoshi Y for weegees) and then hold it before landing again for flutter kick.

Eat. swallows turning them into an egg. They are stuck in the egg for a few turns. crack it and an item comes out.
