So drawn by Luna tonight...drove to the Carolina coast...just to tell her my secrets.....Ocean Gypsy walks tonight...all night......watching for that ship and him....
Sylvia Plath was truly one of America"s great women and moralists; you have to really read a lot of her work, including her diaries and letters and the biographies, as well as the poetry, to learn this. Plath understood the ugliness of the 20th century because she grew up in the age of Holocaust and the creation of nuclear weapons. She was superb, and difficult.
I love this song, but I just can't stand the strings, every time I hear them they make me feel sick to my stomach. Would be a lot better if there were just Ryan and the piano.
There is one thing for definite. Ryan Adams is a musical genius. This version of the song is one of most beautiful things I've heard in a very long time. A deeply heartfelt tribute. His songs are expertly crafted and performed time after time. A very special artist indeed.
If you like Ryan Adams you might also like my music. I'm an alt-country songwriter based in the UK. Check out the vids on my profile and let me know what you think!
Life gives you a heart and then it breaks it! After that...you spend the rest of your life trrying to find your heart...you find it and it is already broken! So you try to make it whole again, because...you just love your heart!
I love reading her poems to this song now. I was initially wary of the piece, as Plath means so much to me - absorbing her words, her beautiful, insane and melancholy words, and sharing her pain, has helped me through some tough times - but as soon as I heard it I fell in love.
Absolutely perfect. Melancholy sound. Terrible sadness. A longing sound. A desire for a relationship with a wonderful, albeit terribly troubled and wrecked woman. I think this song is a perfect artistic expression of just how many people feel towards Plath. I know I do. After reading her poems, I feel a desire to have known her, to be around her. Great song. She was a hurt, fragile-looking woman. A poetic genius. An artistic giant.
@MungMusicMania if you think her poetry does that do you, try reading her journals. The first set of journals I have read from a writer that I felt like it was a true journal.....for no one to read but her. I fell in love with her just as Ryan did. You can't help it.

This is NOT genius you guys. Come on. His sense of melody is preposterous, and his lyrics pretty much make no sense. The only redeeming quality of the song are the strings.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
True. I suppose it depends on one's definition of genius. I don't consider Bob Dylan a genius. I think he was phenomenally over hyped. He did have one gorgeous song that in itself is a brilliant song: "Tamborine Man." Damn good tune!
haha, its funny you say that, i am a music student (too?, as i presume you are [or think you are]), but i think that string line is sooo bad, and the song loses hollowness because of it.
This is pure genius..... to take this song and move it to this level compared to the original.... Ryan Adams...... Thank you for writing this kind of music in a time when the music culture is in near disrepair
Yeah man, totally agree. Sylvia Plath was not an extremely happy person, not the bath running, comforting type. Love Ryan Adams but I'm not really sure where he is going with this...
Usually whoever writes the songs sings them best because they understand the heart and meaning of the song better than anyone else. Ryan Adams might not have the best voice IMO, but he sings his own songs better than anyone else could.
I sort of got a Tom Waits vibe from this performance. Not necessarily the song itself, but still...I dunno, ha. Maybe it's just me. Anyway, great song.

ive noticed (since i read your reply and checked back through my history) that at least four comments i have made on different videos recently have appeared on a totally different totally random video. have you got any idea why this might be happening?
Anne Sexton a finer poet? O please stop idiotic comparisons. There is no comaprison between the two. Anne Sexton is confessional but Sylvia is somehting different. But anyway it is truly amazing to know that a musician has been moved by the voice of Sylvia. I truly believe she is one of the most powerful voices of our times.
yeah he added some sevenths in some chords or changed the dissonance or went to the relative major or minor chord, i am thinking. it really does sound like a new song. what a strong song.

Such pure unadulterated genius. This music belong to the masses and makes me wonder (or not) what drives our culture. In the days of the true musicians, Brittany Spears would not be tolerated as a talent. Thank You Ryan.... for not forgetting and allowing me to know I'm on the right path, musically, for me.

It would have been better if he'd kept it general. It's great that he likes Plath, but as it stands it just sounds like he has an obsessive crush on a dead poet.
Okay, yes, that's fine. But...how will Sylvia Plath tell him that "it will all be okay?" I love this song, but I just find that to be a painful thought. Of all people, how could Sylvia Plath help? I'm sure that's not an accident, but I don't get it.
This song takes no stance on whether anne sexton was a better poet than sylvia! It's simply Ryan Adams being great as he always is. So why not just embrace that and enjoy the song... Bottom line is he liked sylvia plath's work and wrote a song about her nothing to get mad about at all! The song is amazing!!!
I would not Anne Sexton was not at ALL a better poet than Sylvia Plath. Although they parallel in the confessional poetry and feminist movement they are very different. Sylvia has an original voice that will always stand on its own and could never ever be compared to anyone else. She is a great pioneer in American literature.
Unfortunately not. He has a fanbase here, but I think Americans (speaking as one) generally have to be told what to like (either by critics or the mainstream media). Ryan Adams isn't widely covered by the mainstream media, and isn't highly thought of by critics so he's kind of in limbo in that regard.
I don't understand this song at all or why he thought it was worthy to sing a paean to Plath but I suppose 'I gotta get me an Anne Sexton' doesn't have the same ring to it (although she was a much finer poet)
jackcrtlaltdlt, I don't think there really is, nor does there need to be... it's simply Ryan Adams expressing his admiration to the woman. At least that's how I see it.

not only does he rip off westerbergs look and attempts to rip off his voice he wrote a song about sylvia plath as well, his of course is inferior to paul's as always
He's describing Anne Sexton more than Plath. I Imagine a name like "Sylvia Plath" is much easier to execute lyrically than one like "Anne Sexton".
