  • He's describing Anne Sexton more than Plath. I Imagine a name like "Sylvia Plath" is much easier to execute lyrically than one like "Anne Sexton".

  • this song isn't anything she was really about, and seemingly has little to actually do with her.

  • I want the sheet music to this.

  • mungmusicmani's my old account. Ha. Can't believe it would get so many likes. =]

  • This is my funeral song.

  • So drawn by Luna tonight...drove to the Carolina coast...just to tell her my secrets.....Ocean Gypsy walks tonight...all night......watching for that ship and him....

  • Oh my sweet Ryan...

  • If you like the song, you may want to check out the film 'Sylvia'. Really liked it.

  • Sylvia Plath was truly one of America"s great women and moralists; you have to really read a lot of her work, including her diaries and letters and the biographies, as well as the poetry, to learn this. Plath understood the ugliness of the 20th century because she grew up in the age of Holocaust and the creation of nuclear weapons. She was superb, and difficult.

  • he sings it higher, probably 1 tone and a half

  • Prefer this to the album version, even though the album vers is still an excellent song.

  • I'm glad that I realize that Ryan Adams is one of the most talented artist on the planet !! Thank you for all the music you have created !!

  • I love this song, but I just can't stand the strings, every time I hear them they make me feel sick to my stomach. Would be a lot better if there were just Ryan and the piano.

  • Don't analyze. Live.

  • Stop by my hand to listen to my band coving Ryan Adams songs. Thanks Ya'll

  • she had so much, and she had so little.

  • the original Sylvia Plath song comes from Peter Laughner who played in Rocket From the Tombs and Pere Ubu. This is soooo derivative!

  • one of the grea.test songs ever written!pure raw human emotion so beautifully depicted.

  • There is one thing for definite. Ryan Adams is a musical genius. This version of the song is one of most beautiful things I've heard in a very long time. A deeply heartfelt tribute. His songs are expertly crafted and performed time after time. A very special artist indeed.

  • RA is my favorite artist right now, love so many artist's as well, this song...sends me! Love Dr. RD!

  • This mans an absolute legend. Just pure quality.

  • why have i only just heard this song? amazing

  • So beautifully sad................wonderful.

  • Excellent song! I absolutely loved 'Gold'.

If you like Ryan Adams you might also like my music. I'm an alt-country songwriter based in the UK. Check out the vids on my profile and let me know what you think!

  • so so so perfect!

  • one of the finest songs ever. so low and sad.

  • What a song, amazing, just amazing!!!

  • fucking beautiful.

  • I LOVE this man....and what a rare clip. A friend turned me onto it...thanks for posting!

  • i like both late sylvia plath and ryan adams

  • If you like this song/version chech out Soup's acoustic version of "ambitions" by donkeyboy. Truly amazing!

  • Outstanding version. Absolutely love this!

  • Life gives you a heart and then it breaks it! After that...you spend the rest of your life trrying to find your heart...you find it and it is already broken! So you try to make it whole again, because...you just love your heart!

  • I love reading her poems to this song now. I was initially wary of the piece, as Plath means so much to me - absorbing her words, her beautiful, insane and melancholy words, and sharing her pain, has helped me through some tough times - but as soon as I heard it I fell in love.

  • I love you Sylvia

  • @TheIt348 come on dude, are you serious?

  • @TheIt348

  • I feel bad for the 25 people who disliked this video. Ryan Adams is the greatest artist of our generation. He is so skilled.

  • favorite.

  • he looks like Tom Waits in this video :O

  • could do without the violin!

  • A song about Sylvia Plath can't be a bad song.

  • hahahah

  • @asteroid684

    yes it can.

  • i love this man

  • this is one of his best songs and one of his best perfomances but this string line is the worst I've ever heard :(

  • anybody know where to get sheet music for this???

  • MungMusicMania you couldn't have expressed it more perfectly! xo

  • Yeah 2nd verse :)

  • when I first heard the second verse I was really shocked.. nobody can describe love so exactly like Ryan. All his lyrics are so true.

  • Comment removed

  • To be honest, I'm surprised he hasn't been awarded a Nobel Prize for literature.

  • well i suppose he has had a fairly troubled life. i'd guess hes seen love on every measure of its scale.

  • Absolutely perfect. Melancholy sound. Terrible sadness. A longing sound. A desire for a relationship with a wonderful, albeit terribly troubled and wrecked woman. I think this song is a perfect artistic expression of just how many people feel towards Plath. I know I do. After reading her poems, I feel a desire to have known her, to be around her. Great song. She was a hurt, fragile-looking woman. A poetic genius. An artistic giant.

  • Interesting...your explanation of this song reminds me of his "Come Pick Me Up." I love both songs.

  • @MungMusicMania if you think her poetry does that do you, try reading her journals. The first set of journals I have read from a writer that I felt like it was a true journal.....for no one to read but her. I fell in love with her just as Ryan did. You can't help it.

  • @MungMusicMania A homosexual, random YouTube post.

  • such a great singer =]

    amazin song too xD

  • even better than the album version. Love it! Ryan's the man...

  • it is such a pure song, lyrics and all

  • :) I like this song.

    it goes with sylvia plath

  • what about Bob Dylan? he made no sense, and look where he is.. The Rock n Roll hall of fame.

  • haha, its funny you say that, i am a music student (too?, as i presume you are [or think you are]), but i think that string line is sooo bad, and the song loses hollowness because of it.

  • How do those lyrics NOT make sense? This man speaks to my soul. You just don't get it.

  • This is pure genius..... to take this song and move it to this level compared to the original.... Ryan Adams...... Thank you for writing this kind of music in a time when the music culture is in near disrepair

  • I respect Ryan Adams.. but i just have to say, I don't think that's "a Sylvia Plath" you are talking about. At least not the Sylvia Plath I know.

  • He says he wishes he had ..."a Sylvia Plath". I believe he means a muse LIKE the late Ms. Plath.

  • that's what im saying. The muse he describes is nothing LIKE the late Ms. Plath.

  • You obviously don't know Sylvia Plath then.

  • Pretentiousness as comeback: Obviously you haven't read Ariel, Crossing the Water, The Colossus, and the Bell Jar closely.

  • Yeah man, totally agree. Sylvia Plath was not an extremely happy person, not the bath running, comforting type. Love Ryan Adams but I'm not really sure where he is going with this...

  • finally, someone sees it too

  • Beautiful . He is a genius.

  • Yes, this is beautiful! And yes, he is a genius! But the strings are a annoying. His voice is beyond this world!

  • A true singer/songwriter

  • i completely agree

  • um, you're an idiot.

  • Grow up kid

  • WTF?! He's got great vocals!! Stop listening to Justin Timberlake and other assorted shit, and you might learn something!

  • Usually whoever writes the songs sings them best because they understand the heart and meaning of the song better than anyone else. Ryan Adams might not have the best voice IMO, but he sings his own songs better than anyone else could.

  • Wow, I really cant believe you would say that. You really know nothing about good music eh.

  • wow. weak statement there pal

  • me alegra ser sylvia tal vez no soy plath pero aun asi soy the best

  • this is from dutch tv station and dutch tv used to have great television, now it's all dumbed down for the mass public and i hate it

  • Sylvia Plath is the best of the world...

  • I sort of got a Tom Waits vibe from this performance. Not necessarily the song itself, but still...I dunno, ha. Maybe it's just me. Anyway, great song.

  • That is a gorgeous song... Makes us all want a Sylvia Plath I'm sure..

  • im wondering what other videos have totally inapropriate comments on them now (ee below) - is there a way to see all the comments i have made without haing to remember/find the videos again????

  • ah no, clearly! my comments keep coming out on the wrong videos! sorry! (there must be something wrong with my internet here....) thanks for pointing that out scoredon88

  • Comment removed

  • there is no indication that he is disgracefully drunk...at all.

  • ive noticed (since i read your reply and checked back through my history) that at least four comments i have made on different videos recently have appeared on a totally different totally random video. have you got any idea why this might be happening?

  • Fucking god Ryan Adams! Thank so much!

  • LEGEND

  • absolute legend, well said

  • Anne Sexton a finer poet? O please stop idiotic comparisons. There is no comaprison between the two. Anne Sexton is confessional but Sylvia is somehting different. But anyway it is truly amazing to know that a musician has been moved by the voice of Sylvia. I truly believe she is one of the most powerful voices of our times.

  • this song is so amazing! I'll be Ryan's Sylvia Plath! I love poetry! Such a deep song! Love this!!!! Thank you for posting this!!!!

  • such a mournful song, such passion & brillance

    Jimbo

  • He totally changed the chords in this version... weird.. This song is almost unrecognizable to me. but he sounds so great live.

  • yeah he added some sevenths in some chords or changed the dissonance or went to the relative major or minor chord, i am thinking. it really does sound like a new song. what a strong song.

  • this is the song playing in my head for my date this saturday...this women's a real peice of work, hence the song.

  • truly brilliant. been a fan for a few years, but just recently ran into this performance. Probably one of his best, the album version simply does not have the emotion this performance has. Anyone have an mp3 of this version? MSG me...

  • Such pure unadulterated genius. This music belong to the masses and makes me wonder (or not) what drives our culture. In the days of the true musicians, Brittany Spears would not be tolerated as a talent. Thank You Ryan.... for not forgetting and allowing me to know I'm on the right path, musically, for me.

  • thank you a lot for this song about my favourite poet! I also would like to meet such inspiring person as she were...

    oh, sylvia plath

    you crossed our path

    we took a bath

    in your poetry

    you kissed our painful wrath

    sleep well, sylvia plath...

  • is there somebody who`s better?

  • i like this version better than the studio...does anyone have an mp3 of this?

  • I think that was the point... in the song, he's in love w/ a woman who is long gone & unattainable.

  • Okay, yes, that's fine. But...how will Sylvia Plath tell him that "it will all be okay?" I love this song, but I just find that to be a painful thought. Of all people, how could Sylvia Plath help? I'm sure that's not an accident, but I don't get it.

  • This person just stated their opinion and they were perfectly reasonable about it. Lighten up people.

  • cool of you to honor Sylvia in song- well done

  • This song takes no stance on whether anne sexton was a better poet than sylvia! It's simply Ryan Adams being great as he always is. So why not just embrace that and enjoy the song... Bottom line is he liked sylvia plath's work and wrote a song about her nothing to get mad about at all! The song is amazing!!!

  • I would not Anne Sexton was not at ALL a better poet than Sylvia Plath. Although they parallel in the confessional poetry and feminist movement they are very different. Sylvia has an original voice that will always stand on its own and could never ever be compared to anyone else. She is a great pioneer in American literature.

  • He's got a beautiful voice and singing about sylvia plath makes me like him even more. Is he quite big in the US?

  • Unfortunately not. He has a fanbase here, but I think Americans (speaking as one) generally have to be told what to like (either by critics or the mainstream media). Ryan Adams isn't widely covered by the mainstream media, and isn't highly thought of by critics so he's kind of in limbo in that regard.

  • I don't understand this song at all or why he thought it was worthy to sing a paean to Plath but I suppose 'I gotta get me an Anne Sexton' doesn't have the same ring to it (although she was a much finer poet)

  • he read her stuff a lot I think

  • This was recomended by some 1, Its actually really good :)

  • ooooh...whos the brunette in glasses?

  • This is the first time I saw and heard Ryan Adams.

  • I love this song and ryan adams. The album this song is off, gold, is such a good album, theres not a single bad song on it.

  • What a beautiful song!

I love Sylvia Plath and Ryan Adams.

  • Ryan Adams - Sylvia Plath vs. Sylvia Plath - Daddy. I don't feel any connection between the two.

  • jackcrtlaltdlt, I don't think there really is, nor does there need to be... it's simply Ryan Adams expressing his admiration to the woman. At least that's how I see it.

  • great song!! i love sylvia plath!!! i think she was an amazing poet!!

  • Beautiful.

  • wot kind of idiot wonders if ryan adams has heard of sylvia plath come on .

  • LMAO wow, you ever have one of those moments when you realize how generally dumb the fans of an artist you like might be? Anyone?

    Just had that.

  • lol, hopefully its just the people on youtube...

  • he does, he's the kind of guy who knows. sometimes he might seem silly but it's just his humor and when he get tired of interviews and stuff.

  • I loved that comment of yours, "he's the kind of guy that knows"! Yes he does, he reads!

    ...

  • Love it.

  • wow what a talent...i wish i'd heard about him earlier

  • I would love to know what music all you tossers who dont like Ryan Adams like! I guess you all like music that doesnt require you to actually find a reason behind loving a song and not just crap that is played over and over again on the radio or MTV!

  • wow...

  • wow, he sounds like young Tom Waits just without a soul, balls and spirit. he has a same hat thou....

  • Get off the "Plath deserves better?" your a fool. Ryan "deserves better". You need to get over yourself, put down the ego, and get with Turn table System. Your ego is not a road you want to follow. Wait one more thing...Your a poor mans idiot. Thank you thank you very much

  • haha!

  • it's an amazing song, and this version is even better than the album-version. it's too beautiful for words

  • A poor man's Tom Waits? A man in search of some character? Plath deserves better.

  • Are you sure that you're not confusing Ryan Adams with that commercial music tool Bryan Adams, are you?

  • if anything, RA is hell of a lot more successful than BA. the difference is RA's music isnt as GAY as BA's.

  • your intellectual limitedness is nerve-killing...

  • happiness67peace

  • "altruismandtruism"... i've seen your idiocy on other pages as well...

  • Me to!

  • Amo a Sylvia Plath... de hecho todos mis trabajos de teatro los he hecho basado en ella.....
