This needs to be said, again: BGT is not a dancing/singing/whatever contest judged by experts but a variety show with a general audience (the largest audience for any reality, non-sports show ever in the UK). Technically great performances can fall flat because the performers don't connect with the audience, while another performer who's not as skilled can win because she does. (Listen to the audience response to Sophie.) In the semifinal & final, it's the audience who PAY to vote.

Right! She wasn't competing against bellydancers but other dancers (e.g., Signature, 2nd in the final), singers, & the most amazing dog act in years (Kate & GIn, who also made it to the finals). Sophie had to impress the audience enough to get people to vote for her. Not enough did to get her into the top 3 in this semifinal.

One question (not for you!): Where WERE all those "better" belly dancers? Why didn't THEY audition?

Get something straight: BGT is not a bellydancing (or singing, dancing, violin) contest. It's about entertaining & connecting with the audience. Listen to the audience--they LOVE her. That is what counts.

Many bellydancers on youtube have the personality of 4-day-old oatmeal, despite their technical skill. Sophie has charisma as well as sex appeal. (FWIW, the director seems to have kept the cameras back during some of Sophie's moves. The live audience got a much better look than we do.)
