pity, this was a great semifinal. The other semifinal was between two taiwanese chang and the more popular and obviously better fong-pang chao. I really wasn't able to watch that but i guess chang got lucky. it's better to see a chao-reyes world championship final...

This is an interersting observation. Chao was clearly the historically better tournament player. However, as Jay Helfert pointed out, Chang had his number for the cecils. Of course, no one heard of Chang after this tourney, so go figure.

I have the tape I have watched atleast 20 times. Chang didn't get lucky. He played much better against chao than he did against efren. It was like watching 2 different players. It definately was not luck to beat chao. He dominated that match.

Chang was very comfortable in his semi-finals match but look kinda nervous against efren. I guess the nerves and the hype of efren got to him.

1999. This was the 1st time Matchroom put on the World Champs. This was also the 1st time that we saw specially colored "TV balls" in the states. And at the time it featured the largest payday for a winner. All in all, one of the most important tourneys of the last 20 years.

I remember this well. Sky Sports sent this out through Fox Sports World. In this semi match, Efren was down 3-1 to Bustamante, who was at that time the best nine-ball player in the world. Francisco broke and scratched. The nex time Bustamante stepped to the table, Efren had cleared the scratch break and run eight more racks to leave Francisco down 10-3. And then Efren damned near runs out again. The best nine ball I've ever seen on video. Please someone show me something better!!!!

The commentator is Sid Waddell. He's a legendary colour man for Sky Sports in Darts and Snooker. Have to say that his colour comments are the BEST I've ever heard on TV and should provide an example of how to provide "color" in American pool broadcasts. It's the kind of thing that will get people fired up like the old-school baseball broadcasters.

I'll never forget the first shot I ever saw Efren play (having heard of him before, of course), walking into a tournament arena, I saw him line up a basic kick shot completely differently than anyone else would have, about 10 times as difficult the way he chose to play it, but his way, there was an outside chance to not just hit it, but get a return safety. He shot it at such a ridiculously slow speed, one could tell it never crossed his mind he wouldn't achieve exactly what he wanted...

When the hell is that? The only time I time that I know that Efren and Pan matched up was in the China leg of the now defunct SMB Asian 9-Ball Tour. It was quite a close match, but Efren still won it. No pressure at all to the Master, shooting crazy wonderful shots. You can see the video here at Ytube.
