I bought this show on VCR tape many years ago. It blew me away. Why? I'm probably the only drummer who can't get enough of Buddy playing brushes. He does so many subtle things so well. Playing brushes is not easy. Here you have Danny Moss (sax), John Burr (bass), Ralph Sharon (piano), Tony and B. Good, low stress TV show. I cry when I watch this kind of music. Beautiful.
@gaspo218 Buddy was simply amazing anytime he played - whether brushes or full-body contact drums. If I were going to choose one drummer on the brushes, my favorite is probably Louis Bellson.
@gaspo218 There are a number of Louie Bellson videos on You Tube. A great example of his brush work is on a video called "What dvd has this video: Louie Bellson Drum Solo (With Brushes and Sticks)". To see flat out speed mastery, check out "Louis Bellson 1957 Skin Deep". Theres a great 18 min performance with Count Basie called "Bern, Baby, Bern." "Bellson Blues" is another great video. Finally catch "Clark Terry and Louie Bellson: Improv Workshop" for a discussion of approaching a drum solo.
This song is a timeless evergreen, but the way that Bennett, Rich, and the unnamed Pianist (any guesses?) put this over, reminds me of a Pot of Soup on a hot stove, just bubbling to the point of tensile strngth but not quite, but at any moment...it'll boilover.

The drums visually take up a great space but in this song they seem to be scarcely present, an essential accent, nothing more--very nicely done.

Yep. Ralph Sharon. Arguably the best accompanist of them all.

I believe it was Ralph Sharon, Tony's longtime pianist and conductor. Tony's the best !
