It really is a shame the audio on this is so degraded. I wonder how many times it's ben compressed. If the vocals weren't so far back in the mix, I think this would be an excellent single example of what makes Elizabeth Fraser such a uniquely gifted singer. I spent more than a couple hours trying to coax the vocals to the front of this and there's just nothing there to pull up. I had the good fortune to see them in Dec 1990 at the Hollywood Palladium and it's my most treasured concert memory.
Getting to see them perform this live is an amazing experience. I'm surprised to hear of Robin being good natured though, because I found him to be a prick.
I saw them in Dallas Texas in 1992 and it was the best show I have ever been to!!!! I love there music and I always remember that live I must allow artist to be artist!!!!
one of a kind, so original, so unique. i dont try to understand her i just enjoy how she makes me feel with such stunning vocals and lets not forget the wonderful musicians who bring this unique sound together
This is truly amazing I can’t press like enough to express how this performance of the song makes me feel. One of the most underestimated artists in the world. Easily on par with Bjork!
Ive been playing 20 years now and the sound is not as hard as you think: My rig: Fender Strat (neck position pickup on only) with fender deluxe tube amp, stereo chorus, analog delay, flanger (slow rate) and ur pretty much there. These guys and girl paved the way for Verve, radiohead, etc, especially the guitar textures. I'm pretty sure they use TWO delays one around 300 ms and one at 600 ms. Keep playing and sounds will come to you!!
their concerts were usually great, but the last years, i saw a couple in Nancy (france) for example and it was awful. liz was shouting all the time, and it was impossible to recognize the songs. Apparently, they were having troubles in the band.
Yet, i also saw performances that will stay in my mind for ever, like in paris at the Zenith, it was incredible.
Great performance! I had always read their live performances sucked but this proves the opposite. Their influence is also extremely underplayed. Without the genius of this band there would be no shoegazing, no MBV, no Sigur Ros, no Glasvegas - the list goes on.
Robin Guthrie, rey en los riff y efectos, menos mal que unos dias lo tuvo el Perú en un concierto apoyando a otra banda. Liz, esa voz me encanta. Para mi la mejor de los 80 y 90. Adoro y amo la voz de Elizabeth. ALGUIEN ME PODRIA DAR LOS ACORDES O PUNTEOS QUE HACE EL OTRO GUITARRISTA. YO TENGO UNO Y YA SAQUE ESA CANCION, PERO AL MOMENTO DEL CORO EL RITMO DE LOS PUNTEOS CAMBIA. Chord this song pls...
I love how much the host fucked when he was introducing them. Also, I am in love with this band but seriously, I would be kind of agitated if she sang with all that extra shit on it if I saw them live. The original is amazing and I know it would be hard for her to do it like the studio version. But I have seen other live videos that are good. It's like she just wanted to change the song completely, for the better?
i like it i love the cocteau twins but its like shes not even singing to the actual song at all, just like when she was singing bluebeard on the jay leno show i prefer the original version of carolyn's fingers
yeah, many of the hardcore fans do not like her singing during this ear. And infact Robin Guthrie mentioned that his favorite cocteau tour was the Milk and Kisses one bc Liz "sang beautifully again." But personally I love her singing her. Its very interpretative and unusual.
@BahmanG Im a fairly hardcore fan since the first album and I think at this point they had live performances well under control, Up until this era they were messy as hell half the time (robin's drinking etc and Liz's nerves) here they seem assured and in control
Fair comment I think she dose it more if shes uncomfortable... its a shame coz leno and this show would have boosted them and put a few pennies in the bank
Simply jaw dropping, I wish I'd been there not just to see Robin's good natured joshing of Jool's innocent tongue twister at the statrt but at 2 mins 30, 2mins 40, 2 mins 50, 3 mins and 3 mins 10 when Elizabeth sings " a bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo" (my typing does not describe it), I simply melt. I've never heard noise/reverb/music so sweet like it since. Truly a moment caught.
i didn't mean to sound derogatory, i think that this is one of the best bands ever. This improvisation is breathtaking! I wish there were recordings of her singing the songs like this.
...i partially agree, he's not the only one...but what i said...is he screwed up that night introducing the band...thats all, Jools Holland...is great, anyway...
Stunning innovation... I guess you either "get" the Cocteau Twins, or you don't... where I come from, I'm one of the rare people who's ever heard of them... can't get enough... have been a big part of my musical life for 25 years...
this is the best song they ever did, end of story. Better than Ivo, peppermint pig, In fact, of anything from liz this is the best. Even better than her stint with Massive attack on teardrop, and that was pretty sexy too.
Guyphwkes - totally agree and this it the song I want played at my funeral. However this live version is a disaster so we need to give people the real deal elsewhere.
It's great...but how can you possibly choose? I know I can't...I've been trying to since I first heared Pearly Dew Drops Drop played on the morning show, Radio 1, by Mike Read...what...1981?
There is no best; its all amazing...apart from the bits where Ms Liz doesn't sing...! xxx
wow, this is a great discovery to find new music like this for me. i need to pik up more of this cocteau quins...can anyone send me a copy of this album carolyns fingers because i cannot find it online. only cover song from some tribute band.
er...have to point out Jools' error...they are The Cocteau Twins...no suprise you can't find them on line if looking for quins..Carolyn's Fingers is a track off an album entitled Bluebell Knoll...Good luck on your search...you shall find it more than worth your time.
Like them, but this is bollocks, three guitar players all using choruspedals ? WTF? Guthrie is the only one needed here, along with a drummer, bassist, and keyboard player. 3 guitars is overkill!
BahmanG, it's could "overkill" you can see Liz smiles at one point, because she can't hear herself properly above 3 -guitars, there's too many! A keyboard player would have been a better choice to add another dimension to the sound. Three guitars are too much, when one is enough, especially when Guthrie uses a huge chorus-delay sound anyhow!
As a sound-engineer I can tell you your connection to the fact that she "can't hear herself" because there are 3 guitars is completely incorrect. The issue is the feed to her vocal monitors which will always be far more powerful than the guitar amps on stage. They have typically a maximum capacity of 500 to 1000w per monitor versus and onstage guitar level of perhaps 50w. (Remember that's non-linear).
Your comments about keyboards are stupid. The track was recorded with guitar & bass only!
3 guitars make it sound amazing, a keyboard player? Robin was very proud of the way he used effected guitars to create the sound (see his comments on kissed out a red floatboat) and they were guitarists and the friends that played with them were guitarists.
Jools Holland is one of the worst presenters on television- his sole purpose on Later... is to present the bands & he can barely get through the smallest of links!
Rant over, thanks very much for posting this fantastic performance!
Wow I love it. Did they tour with this full band? I be curious to know if there are any live recordings out there.Would love to listen to a whole show with this full band. Liz is amazing on this one too.
I saw them twice, but I never saw a second drummer. I was 16, and I remember marvelling at the hip crowd and cute girls. At the Beacon, NYC. First concert I ever felt safe and happy at. DCD was the other. I miss you Liz.
This stuff isn't even music. It's just pure emotion and feeling. It transcends the definition of music. It touches your soul first then your ears. Beautiful.
I have heard them live several times and in neither performances did they perform Carolyn's Fingers. This is the first song I had heard of theirs, back in the late eighties and they stuck forever. This is a beautiful live version!!!!!! No one but a fan will ever understand or truly appreciate the Cocteau Twins.
It's weird ... there was a period when they added the full band, and replicated their sound so well in concert - that sonic wall of glorious sound. It seems to me at the same time, Liz started experimenting with her live vocals. It worked a lot of the time, I thought. A lot of her vocal work was always about experimentation, pushing the boundaries of lyrics and song. I thought this performance was astonishing.
I think this song works better with a band then it would have worked with just tape. Also, Liz's experimental singing which seems like her style during this era.
She, Robin and Simon are true auteurs. They recorded utterly heavenly stuff through a period replete with some of the most soulless music ever committed to vinyl, and for that they were even more remarkable.
Great to see them on Later, by the way - never knew they appeared on it!
I would have agreed with you about 2 or 3 years ago, definately 5 years, but there is finally some good has been coming out in the last year and a half. Groups like Blonde Redhead, Bon Iver, and My Morning Jacket are still great. I'm sure that there is some that I'm missing. What I do agree with is that there is not too much unity or a collective of good band and all the stuff that is on popular radio is bland and unexciting because the major labels are run by greed. Indie music still is great.
if you open your heart and feel it-a resonance of pure love. the quivering in Liz's voice is just another joyful expression sometimes referred to as the 'dolphin' years because of its similarity in vibration, purity and innocence.
Given the way the vocals were created for the albums, and to no written lyrics, and considering the mult tracking of those vocals any attempt to do it live would need, as it it did in the early days, a lot of prerecorded material on stage. That used to cause all kinds of problems in itself. This was them at their brightest and happiest as can be detected from these Tube clips. These songs were the closest they ever got to stuff that might sell in quantity and these were great performances
I love the Cocteau Twins, but I don't like the way she sang some songs live in the 90s. Call me old fashioned, but I preferred the original melodies/vocal performances.
At the end of the concert, the lights went on and i recognized somebody very special in the audience, I told him: "she is too powerful for the mike", and a wide eyed Ivo Watts Russell replied "yes"
maravilhoso...

Cue the thumbs down...

I agree 100%. It's almost like she wasn't able to duplicate what she had done while younger.
Many of us lose our voice when we age, but I really don't think that's the case. I honestly don't know what her intention is.
She ruins her own songs.

what a daunting task the CTs had to recreate their amazing songs live, and yet...beautiful! as good or better than the album.

WOW.
a few days later they played LA, same lineup.
At the end of the concert, the lights went on and i recognized somebody very special in the audience, I told him: "she is too powerful for the mike", and a wide eyed Ivo Watts Russell replied "yes"
