Mainland, despite restricted by censorship regulations has the capacity to surpass Hk series due its refreshing mis en scene and to an extent attention to detail . While the successes of Hk series of late seem to be reliant on the audience's nostalgic senses of the 'Golden Era' and the heavy use of marketing strategies of promotion. Hk series need to stop utilizing old predictable formulas that were successful in the past and begin to seriously evolve as far as plot and directing demands.

If you treat this as remake of the old, then it will fail. Instead, this is the Chinese production's team reinterpretation of the story and should be treated as such. Actors/Actresses will have their own interpretation of characters. Directors will have their own image of scenes. And together the series put forth will have another feeling altogether

the original ending was so much better and it made more sense. In a nut shell, "The main guy works for the boss and gets engaged to the daughter. He sabatage a deal b/c the boss was doing dirt, and gets hunt down. He goes to the girl, but she refuse to go with him. He hides in a remote town and starts a family. girl changes her mind and finds him only to find that he is happily married. the boss follows her to find where the main guy is kills his new family. He goes back to SH to kill boss

Meanwhile, the main guy's friend marries the girl, cheats on her & treats her badly. They would get a divorce. And main guy's friend sees that the boss is a slimball plans for main guy to kill the boss on a fair term(russian roulette). Main dude tries to get the girl back, but she goes to Pairs. so the two guys are bros again and runs SH's organised crime game. He plans to retire, but gets shot up by French rival. On his last breath, he tells his bro that he was going to Paris to find her.

Why the 3 famous scenes from the 80's version were ruined by this version:

Lik's wedding scene (80's version). This scene shows the profound love of Man-Ceung towards the girl. Because of that, he ill-advisedly interrupted the wedding and risk being killed by the so-called God Father's men. It also shows that even a dignified person like Man-Ceung can do something like that because of love. The mainland Chinese's version had none of such foretold beauty.

Man-Ceung shot "The God Father" (80's version). This scene illustrates the difficulty that Lik is in. He owes the God Father and Man-Ceung quite evenly. To be righteous, he had to fair to both of them. As a result, their fate is decided upon a single bullet. The mainland Chinese version's emphasis was about something else, perhaps about how to govern with a fist. Ha...ha....!

Man-Ceung assassination (80's version). This scene, again, has to do with the love of Man-Ceung towards the girl. Because of love, he chooses to relinquish everything to follow the girl. Due to bad luck, he was killed in the process. Man-Ceung's death hints that Lik will end up with nothing but money and power. The mainland Chinese's version was simply meaningless.

Goofy? Dude, it was made in 1980 at a very low budget. What it lacks in visual effects it makes up in the acting. Chow Yun Fat is by far a better actor than anyone in China. You mentioned the script and that it was bad. Trust me dude, nothing is worst than what's coming out of mainland China. Again, stick with labor and leave the art to Hollywood and TVB of the 80's and 90's. The TVB now is damn too mainland Chinese.

I have a friend who is a Mainland Chinese exchange student in college. He said that CCTV in China is owned by the government and tries to brainwash people. They people who like this or any of Chinese remake, like Condor Hero with Liu Yi-Fei, is brainwashed. Can't believe I actually bought that series. The acting was over exaggerated. No real feeling at all. I like how he killed her father during the wedding rather than later though.

If you read my comments written in 3 parts, you will understand that the new version may be better in looks, but it ruined many major points in the story, particularly the wedding & the assination scenes. Again, the artistic level of mainland China is very low. Perhaps it is because they are still developing. Besides this film, they have also ruined the Condor Hero Trilogy several times.

I tried to watch it last night only to be reminded of why I had to skip to the major scenes when it first came out. It was too damn garrulous. Like all TV series, they are lengthy for the purpose of making more money in advertisment, givinng existence to hundreds of pointless scences. The main character is good looking but his acting is millions of notches below Chow Yun-Fat. The rest of the cast is about 1.3 billion notches below, which means only a hand full of people in China can act.
