A person may cling to the guilt and miseries she knows, painful as they are, as opposed to launching out into an unknown way of thought, of living. The Church provides stability for some people, while free thinking leaves too many choices to accept.
Think of an infinite buffet table, and you're trying to follow your doctor's rules to eat healthy.

Very good point, and I do agree. Still, it's still not always obvious which side is which. After my divorce, it was assumed by my friends I'd have any number of hot nighst, and yet I never could bring myself to do so, that it was not worth it.
We all have lines we refuse to cross, for whatever reason. It's just not always a given which ones they are.
Maybe I'm thinking of eating properly.
