Did they watch the video at all after they made it. It's grainy, poor quality, and you can't read the print they've got scrolling up the screen. Seems like they would have gotten the generator started and warmed up before filming too.
About the CFLs.. they don't last like the mfg claims either. I've got 2 that failed before the normal incandescent equivalents right next to them, and now I've got 2 mercury filled bulbs that I can't chuck in the trash.
Excellent vid about the folly of CFL. By the way, I have that same generator at home, they are smelly, noisy little things :) Gonna get myself a nice Lister generator at some point.
In any case they are cheaper to run than traditional bulbs. Perhaps when LED technology becomes a viable option I will switch to them, for now I am more than happy to use CFL's over traditional.
That's fine as long as you don't believe that you are saving the planet! By the way make sure that you get the lamps recycled at end of life. Throwing them in the trash effectively dumps mercury into the food chain, it ends up in fish, particularly their fat!
you are also in danger of CFL fires too. You won't worry about fires if you use CFL from the early 90s and 80s, but today's electronic CFL are fire hazards due to poor quality. Google "Whitehorse house fire" and "Cumberland MD CFL fire" there are also more articles. Also they emit radiation...take your chance...You probably did not recognize they use 4 times more electricity in the factories than making incandescent due to more complex parts and more parts. I will recommend when HEI comes out.
CFL's are better than traditional light bulbs in every way possible. Within reason you can run six "60W" CFL's for the same cost as one old fashioned 60W bulb.
If you want a fair experiment, See how many normal bulbs the generator will run vs CFL counterparts.
Other than that, I refer you to mythbusters that proved that even with the greater start-up load... CFL's are still a whole lot cheaper than wasteful traditional bulbs.
I think you are mis-understanding the demonstration. The issue is that an 18W CFL actually requires about 36W of energy to be generated to make it work therefore all the "savings" particularly in CO2 emission are overstated by a factor of 2. CFLI are just not the solution to saving the planet earth that the lamp manufacturers, governments and NGOs like Greenpeace would have you believe!

Author failed to recognize difference between induction in electronics and resistance.

Major FAIL on the understanding of an extremely effective demonstration of the hype surrounding CFL.

This is an absolute joke of an experiment.

what will it do with 4 cfl's?

It works OK but it is a 600W rated generator!
