I'll agree with other posters; works of Michelangelo et al. (and the ancient works that inspired them; Laocoon, etc) were very muscular, but hardly like modern bodybuilders. There's a big difference in pectorals, for one thing; the modern aesthetic seems to favor huge, bulging pecs for some reason.

His comparison to sculptures of Michelangelo is pretty dubious. If you look at the David sculpture you'll see that it may have muscles, but not at all in the same proportions that many body builders (like Arnie) do/did.

That's not to call body builders grotesque; just that the comparison doesn't work.

I'd say you are quite right, still, if you think that back then that was the highest level of "body building" they could' ve achieved it's pretty obvious that they wanted to picture the best possible muscular body they could get a hold of... Don't you think? The same Moses sculpture is VERY muscular, and it's portraying an old man! Still in media stat res, so Arnie is not totally right... Muscular over-growth is grotesque just as much as obesity. Beauty is in the middle.

you do realize that when the sculpture was first made it was meant to placed on top of a building when it was commissioned. but after he was done they thought it was so wonderful that they would rather keep on a plan surface. The disproportionate element was said to be because of the high distance thus you could see the hand because that was much bigger because of the symbolic importance.

what most so-called "body-builders" have done to their bodies is 'grotesque'. That is not opinion but fact just as what the typical sedentary modern day human has "done" through neglect and abuse to his/her body is equally grotesque. What someone who is balanced strives for is symmetry and being in harmony with their environment
