  • You could use the same technique for a drier, except it requires multiple people. One person petals on one stationary bike to create electricty, to create heat. Another person petals to spin it. Oh, and was I the only person who saw soapy water flying out of the barrel?

  • I've got to say, I like this! I'm probably too lazy to use it, but I like it. It's a good way to get the washing done without using electricity, and at the same time get good quality exercise. And it's inventive and resourceful.

  • Is there anythign inside the inner bucket to help the cloths spin? or is it just an empty container?

  • this is amazing

  • The world needs more people like those in this team. This is one good way to save natural resources and at the same time keep healthy. You save on electricity bills and gym bills and at the same time you're helping save the plannet. Well done team, I like to see people do what you do.

  • Seems like a waste of water over the hand washing style.

  • @chechnya Isn't there a way to recycle soapy water. Like the water that leaves a normal washing machine or a recently used shower. Couldn't she just use those drain systems to recycle the water?

  • perfect for those Ethiopians who need a workout!.......

  • Here's a basic pedal powered washing machine. I think we could make this easily with Steve's old barrels.

  • Comment removed

  • @ljokjell People who say things like you say are usually closet homosexuals. I'd just like to say that there's absolutely nothing wrong with that and I hope that you find your path out of the closet soon before you hurt too many people's feelings.

  • thank you

  • This is awesome!!!!Can you tell me how you made the drum inside a drum?

  • Why not just hook that to a actual washing machine?

  • me gusta esa lavadora jaja estaria chido tener una en mi rancho.

    buen video.

  • It looks similar to a machine I once saw for sucking cock.

  • I was given 2 plastic barrels that were used to store diesel fuel. Is there a way to completely clean the diesel fuel out of these barrels?

  • The damn thing is so loud, it's impossible to hear what she's saying.

  • Very nice design!

  • The mayapeadal washing machine is a bike washing machine please check out 26 other bike washing machines :D

  • GREAT!!! thank you for sharing

  • yes yes yes!

  • Great to see this video and nice low tech design. Shame the audio is so poor on the video as I have trouble understanding what she is saying. I've posted a video response showing another design for a pedal power washing machine but probably less useful to third world use.

    Thanks for posting.

  • There is a better alternative to this, it's called a WonderWash. You fill it with hot water, some soap and you crank it. It is airtight so the hot water and hot air create a lot of pressure and force the detergent into the clothes.

  • I wish they said how affective this method was? How clean clothes get and how long it takes to do a wash cycle etc....?

I am thinking on building a cabin in woods. Something like this I could build for long stays in woods. Looks like it is made from scraps of parts, a little welding and viola a cheap machine

  • From my experience, half and hour of bicycling is enough to run a wash, rinse and spin cycle. The clothes come out very clean, and so dry you can't wring anything out of them! It's not an easy project per se, but it's doable, effective and fun!

  • Thing I'll try to make one of these.

    Looks like a good idea.

  • I like it, maybe americans can get in shape instaed of hitting a few buttons and laying around.

  • This is why the first world is awesome. We can sit on our lazy butts making arrogant remarks about those less fortunate than us. Do they want any better for themselves? It's highly likely. And, I'm just going out on a limb here saying this, but I bet that a pedal-powered washing machine IS better than slapping each individual piece of laundry against a rock in a river.

Just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had.

  • moron

  • you also have think that when you lose power for a week, you need to live in the dark. NEW YORK AND CHICAGO did. can you?

  • It is raping your cloths, becaus it spins to one side..... You can't spin it high, and you are talking about the enviroment? all the water that is coming out, with the detergents? Is going on the street?

Maybe a Miele will be a tip?

    I

  • YES any diagrams on building one.ive decided that my life goal is living without paying a single utility bill this machine would be a step in the right direction

  • Where can I buy one?

  • Why don't someone produce the PCV hand cranked pressure washer design driven with foot pedals? I have the hand cranked washer and it works well. If someone makes it as big as the Mayapedal washer, it would be great.

  • awesome awesome awesome

  • its very cool i made a pedal powered washer with all recycle material all i used was a old bicycle with a rim for my belt drive and an old worn belt that was a mower deck belt and last but not least a old gas powered washer it was a maytag and all this was free so i made a priceless running eco friendly and recycled washer im going to post a video of it soon and its noisey but really not as noisey as this one thank you for showing this video

  • Thanks for your comment. I would be interested in seeing your design when you post it.

  • explaining it while using it was a bad idea. I would have preferred an explanation without all the background noise.

  • Sorry, I was limited by time and camera technology. I'll try to avoid this problem in the future.

  • if everyone in america just used one of these think how much we could reduce pollution!

  • wow... that's ingenious but you do need a hearing protection. Only thing is I probably couldn't make one of those myself. A company should create one. Gives meaning to multitasking. Ingenious.

  • It's a little noisy, but it's not as bad as it seems from the video. You don't need earplugs to use it.

  • When obama gets done, every American will need one of these.

  • Hey, perfect birthday present for the wife!

  • Great Idea! All that would be needed for agitation are some fins on the inside. I would imagine that without fins in the barrel, the clothes are just hydroplaning on the bottom of the tube without rotating

Having a mesh inner barrel would be benefit the design. Reclaiming the soapy water would be great for subsequent loads.

Also, Is the machine sturdy enough to enable your own spin cycle by changing to a higher gear and peddling faster?

  • There are PVC pipes attached inside the inner drum to agitate the clothes. They function as the fins you describe.

The inner drum is not mesh, but it is filled with holes so water flows through it easily. It might be possible to reclaim the water, but that's not part of this design.

Unfortunately the machine vibrates too much if you try to do a spin cycle.

  • wasn't the vibration partially due to using a plastic inner-barrel?

  • Hook about 20 together!

Then Lance Armstrong could run his own laundromat! :)

  • SPEAK LOUDER WE CAN'.T EAR YOU!

  • If you can (still have the machine, patented, a camera and time) Please Please PLEASE make another video carefully Explaining how it was made. If you just get one person, just one person to copy your machine and display it around and other ppl start building them, we can eliminate washing clothes as an expense.

We have to conserve. We are running out of time.

The Depression was practice. Our government is just delaying what is to come. Mid 2009 some real shit will hit the Fan. We are BANKRUPT!

  • Ditto

  • THAT IS COOOOOL GOOD JOB

  • its funny but very good for india africa

  • Why just there? Think of the money we'd save and how fit we'd get. :-D

  • i posted this to my 6390 friends on myspace today many who are environmentalists looking for self sufficiency alternatives, i would love to know how to make one of these!

  • My wife is from Guatemala.I wanted to surprise her with a peice of her heritage.I thought this machine was so creative that she would feel very proud of her heritage.I wish I knew the address of there shop. It would be worth the cost to ship because of the sentimental value it would bring to my wife. Thanks for sharing your info with me.

  • Where can I go to buy one of these? Are they being sold on eBay...I would like to buy one. This would really save on electricity...less dependancy on the electric company.

  • Mayapedal is a small NGO located in Guatemala. While I'm sure they'd be happy to sell you one, shipping might be prohibitively expensive. They usually serve the local communities.

  • Excellent in intent and style. However, does it clean clothes? And does it clean without adding wear to the fabric?

  • I had always imagined inventing something like this

  • can i married you???

  • The body of animals is in fact the most efficient machine on this planet. With one slice of bread a human being can wash 20 kg of clothes (of course you can ask also a horse to give you a helping hoof). A washing machine needs the energy of about 15 kg of bread to do the same work.

  • And on satuday nights it can be used as the barrel for the lottery draw!

  • It Leaks....lol Great Idea

  • That machine is awesome!

  • I feel the cultural and gender effects of this machine where never addressed. This washing machine was designed by American volunteers as an alternative to an American style of washing clothes. No one around Maya Pedal uses electricity or much water to wash laundry. This pedal powered machine is a fine idea as an alternative to how someone who watches you tube may wash their clothes. But I don't feel it is really necessary in the Guatemalan community it is being developed in.

  • The cultural and gender effects of this machine were not addressed here, because they are more complex than can be properly addressed in this format. We alway strive to make our designs appropriate to the cultural context.

You made a few incorrect assertions that I would like to clarify. This machine was developed by volunteers AND the local Guatemalan staff. It was developed as an alternative to hand washing, which is very common in Guatemala. It is a labor saver.

  • how about if we let the Guatamalans decide what they like or don't

  • One person commented about agitation being necessary....

Could you agitate it by pedaling forwards and backwards, or is the system not set up for that?

  • Currently agitation is not possible because we use a bike freewheel so the drum can spin freely, but it would be fairly trivial to lock the freewheel so you could do that.

I found my clothes got clean in the machine as it is.

  • Who the FUCK is going to manufacture these without any powered machinery?!?!

  • run, but a big step forward now, but proably the bigget problem is that you have use hot water to get rid of all the bad stuff you know, so maybe it was possible to makea bicyling warmer or something ! dunno

Exellent work, and the best of luck !

  • Exellent Invention and you proably have seen the Innovate or Die - Aquaduct: Mobile Filtration Vehicle

Wow, you praobly could make jobs for some a lot of people if you could get the idea "sold" to someone with commerical power, And maybe you could add som solar power panles to make the water warmer but i guess thats in th elo

  • you are a genious!

  • a bit prehistoric, and my neibours wouldnt like it either...LOL>>> good try though..

  • its a great idea but i would have to smack my neighbor in the mouth if they kept me up all night with that thing

  • A. hand washing uses much less water. B. spinning without agitation doesn't work. But "A" for effort...good work...the point is that pedal power can do alot more than what is currently available to the world at large.

  • An alternative to agitation is to use paddles fixed to the inside of the wash drum (like most European washing machines do) - The paddles lift up the clothes and then drop them back on to clothes at the bottom of the drum. This dropping and folding action forces water, air bubbles and detergent through the fabric of the clothes. Because the wash action does not require the clothing be floating in water, much less water is needed. All you need to is add paddles, use less water and pedal slower!

  • Don't worry. The woman can not understand. Lol.

  • Don't worry. The woman can not understand

  • A. hand washing uses much less water. B. spinning without agitation doesn't work. But "A" for effort...the point is that pedal power can do alot more than what is currently available to the world at large. Keep up the good work :D

  • Very Nice!

  • I'm pretty pissed off at this idea of peddling everything to make it work. Firstly its unbalance workload, people would develope horse legs and stick arms, secondly, this is retarded to substitute every single form of power by human power, there are plenty of green alternatives that dont require one to huff and puff all day on bicycle-like contraptions.

  • How many of those green alternatives are free; do not require money to maintain and reuse. Look at the effort you have to exert to go to work just to pay for the alternatives to operate. This idea is free of costs, and could possibly be used as a business venture for a real go getter. Electricity is expensive to produce...at least this method does not require hazardous batteries and is safe.Plus good exercise never hurt anyone.

  • did you consider trying to reclaim and filter the water to conserve it?

  • We did not consider trying to reclaim the water as it was unnecessary for location where the machine was designed. (See my comment below) In a different location, a filtration system might be added when you empty the machine. Thanks for your comment.

  • Great idea using the most basic of resources saving the Environment!

But how much water did you use? At 1:20 you filled it with a huge water cooler container and as much as the news may be bias about developing countries they still may not have that much water to live off let alone keeping their clothes clean!

  • Water use is a concern, and we are refining the design to use less water. However, were we were located in the mountains of Guatemala, water was readily available.

Clean drinking water is definitely in short supply, but there was plenty of water that was unsafe to drink but good enough to wash clothes with. This design would not be appropriate for a location where water is not similarly available.

  • Nice project. The next version might include designing some universality into the bike drive mechanism so it could power existing washing machines (recycle old box washers). That said, clothes washing is one form of energy consumption that is not time-dependent and therefore a slower, perhaps wind driven, mechanism would better serve future needs.

  • I have also entered a multiuse machine which is designed to easily interface with other machines (of course I'd need to work on a connection to run old washing machines). This design focused on low cost and simplicity of construction. Old washing machines are not readily available in rural Guatemala, so they were not a design consideration. If the design is to be used in other regions, we'll definitely consider your idea.

  • Its a concern for people with less money.

ya, like from the developed country. Which the weather is hot and humid. I agree its a good concept, you dont have to rely on others to do your fat lazy arse laundry. Good concept, but need to work on the look to appeal to some type of people. My friend really think it cant clean clothing because it look getho. Some people minded are like that. They prefer modern, highend, glossy kinda thing. Too much commercial advertisment fed to them.. lol

  • Sadly, many consumers don't see the beauty in simplicity. Hopefully this contest will help change some minds.

  • Laundry isn't that difficult if you only have one shirt and one set of pants. It's only difficult for "developed" nations because we have too much clothing and wash far too often.

  • While you are correct that we tend to have more laundry in developed nations, in my experience, laundry was still a significant task in rural Guatemala (and I would assume in other areas). Large families are the norm, and washing clothing for 5 young children is time consuming even if you do have fewer clothes. If it is any indication, several people requested the machine while we were working on the prototype.

  • Nice invention. Sorry to say this but ("Large families are the norm, and washing clothing for 5 young children is time consuming even if you do have fewer clothes"). Maybe instead of making invention for people with 7 children, you should tell to have less kids. Or do they not have birth control in Guatemala?

  • Or we could tell Western countries who have markedly fewer children to stop using 80% of the worlds resources for so few people...

it is always easier to put people down for their choices than work with them to improve their choices
