The kershaw composite is not about better steel on the edge and cheaper on the back. Logically it would be the case, but the compositing method they use is so expensive that an one piece blade of the better steel is cheaper.

It is only cosmetic. Kershaw also said that the welding is strong as the other part of the blade. So it is beautiful and functional.
