as far as versions go betty buckleys is up at the top with bernadette peters i never cared for patti lu pones version of roses turn but her everythings coming up rses was perfect
I saw Betty do the role as Mama Rose at the Papermill Playhouse and she was incredible! I recently saw Patti and enjoyed her immensely but I was left missing the intensitivy and vocal power Betty gave to the role. Betty is able to make anyone in the audience really connect with the character. I felt like I knew this character and that is powerful because it sucks you right into that role. Betty should have also done it on Broadway but unfortunately there are many politics involved.
I have met Betty four times and she couldn't have been nicer. Each time she has taken time to talk to her fans and sign autographs and pose for pictures. Once of the nicest stars I've ever encountered!!!
Really? I was the Asst. Stage Manager for a show in Dallas that she came to see last year and she was really snobby with her nose in the air and she wasn't nice at all.
I've seen Tyne Daly and Patti Lupone on Broadway, and Betty Buckley at the Paper Mill. Buckley's performance is the best I've ever seen of anything. There is not, to my knowledge, a recording of her that. This was from a concert, not a production of Gypsy, so she's not going to be as invested in the character. And as for her Paper Mill performance being humorless--it was purposely re-conceived that way. It's not the traditional Mama Rose, but it was raw and real and wonderful in its own way.
singing the shit out of songs does not a great theater performance make. I love the thrill of a high belt, but if it isn't sung in the context of a well crafted performance when ON STAGE....ho hum.
I saw Betty in "Sunset Blvd" 4 times and she kicked ASS over Glenn Close. I love Patti and I actually think Tyne really worked this number, but Betty does WORK her shit in this recording!!
this is really good. when i started the video i expected to not like it, simply because i'm in love with Patti LuPone's "rose's turn" and I truly think no one else could ever be better. but this came pretty damn close.
Betty played Rose at Paper Mill Playhouse in Mew Jersey....about 45 minutes form Broadway. Though I respect her amazing talent, she was insufferable as Rose. No sense of humor. No sense of Rose as sensual. I was left thinking that someone should have had her (Rose, not Betty) arrested for child abuse. The best Rose I've ever seen was Tyne Daly. Truly a phenomenal performance.
Hmmm...not aware who you heard from, but theater folks in NYC agre that Tyne was magnificent. SHe was great because she had this raw engine of powere behind her character choices and never for a moment did she not behave as Rose. Patti Lupone is a wonderful performer, but much of the time she was playing "Patti" not Rose. And As I said about Betty, she was relentless (appropriate for Rose) but humorless (NOT appropriate for Rose).
The great thing about Rose is that she can be interpreted so many different ways without it being an "incorrect" interpretation.
Tyne played a fantastic Rose -- Warm, lovable, almost white-trashy in a way. ("It comes from our living so close to the railroad tracks.")
Betty played a woman driven less by her daughters and more by her own selfish desires to be a star -- She has EXTREME tunnel vision, she is cold, and the only way she connects is through performing.
IMHO, apples and oranges are one thing..but one does not make a satisfying dessert from bitter herbs...and Betty was unsavory as Rose. Big rule in any well crafted musical: the audience must CARE for the leading character. Betty was off-putting to the nth degree as Rose.
Betty is an amazing talent, no question. But I still contend that her Paper Mill Rose was a relentless harpy. The director is a chum...stories are that she was undirectable...I daresay it was not his 'reconception' of the role, but her own willfulness at play. I LOVE Gypsy...one of the best examples of American Musical Theatre craftsmanship. I did not love the Paper Mill production because Ms. Buckley was off the mark with Adolf Rose.
This makes me sad. That two people have said she's not very nice to fans. :( Seeing as how her fans have gotten her where she is. I hope that it was just two bad experiences you guys had and not how she is all the time.
She has tweeted me personally and she does not know me! Her follower list is getting longer now she probably does not even see my tweets, but if you get her when she is on, she answers, and other day sent a small group of us a tweeters a personal "Sweet Dreams" note! Everyone has their off days. Majority of posts who met her said she is super nice.
Without even looking at her performance I can tell that this was incredible. Goodness. Listen to the emotional strike behind the slow part. This is amazing.
THEY NEED TO RELEASE THE ENTIRE CARNEGIE HALL CONCERT! i was there also and you are so right...the auidience went WILD so many times......it was so exhilarating....the single cd doesn't capture the true evening....definitely akin to the difference between the re-release of Judy Garland's Carnegie Hall concert with full 2 discs..I hope we don't have to wait as long for this one...I was in the 4th row center...it was CRAAAAAAAZY!
i would like to actually have seen her do this song, since the visual performance of this song is just as, if not more, important than the vocals, but she is vocally impressive.
Betty is in my top 5 actresses, I love her to death, I saw Patti in this show (also in my top fav actresses) she was phenomal, but I am very surprised by Betty, she really got in character, GO BETTY!!!
i saw her at carnegie hall when she performed this number--she changed into character on stage behind a screen-when she came out and said her she is boys, the place went ballistic-it was as if everyone was anticipating this number-the cd recording of the audience screaming at the beginning doesn't do justice to the ACTUAL applause and screaming that happened (had to be edited for cd purposes). we were screaming for about 20 seconds-that's a long time
Betty sounds great!, though perhaps in this version a bit too classy and not enough brassy for pushy Madame Rose! (She was singing this live at Carnegie Hall--so probably not in full character as "Rose.")
Must have been great to see in person. Just listening to it and not seeing it - well it's a bit fast in spots and that takes away from some of the emotion. Vocally this is one of the best. Thanks for posting this.
Bravo!

Is there anything Betty can't sing.? The pure vinegar and defiance are the best I've ever seen in anyone doing this song.
