visit small cities and you will be safe. You are not in danger from Pakistanis but unfortunate terrorist events can happen. so small cities are better to visit instead of big cities where there is danger. small cities of Punjab are peaceful and safe. Swat and NWFP were good tourist places but this war has disturbed many things. You may also visit murree which is a moutain area which is very safe.

You'll be fine, just give it a while and then visit as much as you like, and sure they would welcome you. I know of many English guys who would like to visit the north of Pakistan, and many of my buddies in the army would like to visit the Khyber pass, as a rough guide watch Michael Palins Himalaya (2004) you would like that! :)
