Designed for users? One word, Gentoo. That said certain flavors like fedora are pretty damned user friendly and are great linux distros to boot. I use fedora myself.
Linus would have 50% more users, if there was an emulator that runs all games for windows. I using Ubuntu...but some times i must switch to windows because of damned games. Anyway...linux is my main OS!
@srdxctfvgybhnj have you tried xen with gpu passthrough? i think thats your answer. and most people who seriously consider using linux don't care about games, they care about programs that not even wine will work with such as the adobe suite.
Consider reading this, I think you utterly fail to see the good in linux. And maybe you just don't know windows enough to see it's flaws. That is the only thing I can think of. Just because you have used something for a long time, and have linux on another machine doesn't mean you have really given it a chance.
It is sad the world is powered by money. You know that a monetary base society is doomed to fail. The world may need to change to a Resource-Based Economy.

@maw88ify Even if it was resource based, that would make linux the OS that requires no resource to trade for it, and MS would ant resources for windows. Either way you look at it currency of some type is what drives the industry.
The 'end user' will most likely pick Ubuntu as his first Linux distro. Then he would either stick to Ubuntu or go to some other distros, that may be faster, more usable (to that user) or give the newer versions of software he needs.

Holy shit. I almost shit myself. You think linux programmers are "good." Talk about self ownage. If linux programmers are so great, why does Microsoft and Apple have the better product? Linux has innovated nothing.. Yes I said it, nothing. LOL. Linux does NOTHING better than Windows for the desktop and it doesn't even do better as a server. Jesus christ.
HOW is their product better? vista was a major disaster. 7 is better but still needs a lot of work (it consumes hardware like theres no tomorow 9gb HDD, 1gb ram when idle). Windows also require many other software for maintenance (defragers, cleaners, antiviruses). No matter how you compare both OS's linux boots faster, runs application faster, is smaller in size, is better looking, cleaner, comes with pre installed software and does not slow down as time passes by.
@cyberlord64 Vista actually was not a major disaster. You need to look at microsoft history. It always goes Somewhate stable to stable to somewhat stable. It is how most companies progress. 1gb of ram idle. No, around 700 meg, and it uses that ram for indexing, superfetch, security and other important componenets. DOS does everything faster than linux with less resources, does that make it better?
@JamesManes Thats not what i meant. for the same result windows require more power and even at 700mgs (after a fresh format) is still a lot compared to 200mgs. If you include graphical effects, antivirals and other stuff running in the background it will eventually go over 1 gb. My win 7 takes up 1.2gb right after booting and i perform clean-ups and maintenance weekly. I am not trying to be a smartass. i have been using windows since win98. I came to that conclusion by experience.
@cyberlord64 My windows 7 uses 1.4 gb right upon boot. I have 4 gb of ram, which is nearly a standard in todays world. Windows 7 handles ram dynamically. If you only have 1 gb of ram, it will use less to keep free space. Hell I have seen 7 boot into safemode on 40 mb of ram. I shit you not. Slow as hell but it worked. Windows uses more ram to make applications respond faster. It is a good thing. Thinking 1 gb of use is a lot is rather lol. Also, I have used windows since 95. Although I was a kid
@JamesManes well let me tell you this. My laptop (single-core amd sempron 2ghz, 2gb ram) has both win 7 (perfectly tuned) and Linux mint. The same software runs faster on mint than 7 Especially those requiring CPU power (DVD conversion, image rendering). Also Full HD video plays as still images in 7 with my CPU burning to 100% while in mint (and xp) it is at 80-90% and plays fine. This happens because windows 7 already takes a lot of resources from the system.
@cyberlord64 First of all, you skimped out on buying a good laptop if it has a sempron.
Second, cool, linux runs stuff faster on an older machine, but it does less. Windows is much more functional and can do way more stuff than linux, of course it will require more. Its only common sense. If linux works good for you, cool story, but it is no where near as good as Windows for the end user or on the desktop at all.
PS. You have linux on a laptop? ROFL. Bad bat life.
Ok if you buy a shittop don't complain about a fully featured OS (Windows) not working properly on it. Its only common sense that the better OS will require more power.
Linux audio system (ALSA) has no standard therfore blows
Linux kernel changes way too much to keep up with
Xorg cannot sync to v blank even with proper drivers becaue it is an asyncronous server.
No, Sempron is the worst AMD processor made, and your build quality is going to be absolute balls on a laptop for 300 dollars. I would not even accept a 300 dollar desktop in my house. You just bought a piece of shit and complain when an actual OS (windows) does not work well.
I would argue with you. "Better" is a VERY relevant term. If somebody want's to play games then YES, Windows is better. If somebody is a proffesional photographer, then YES, Mac is better. BUT if somebody want's to set up a server, then Linux comes first. If somebody LIKES the power and tools to change ANYTHING in his system, then Linux is better. It all comes down to a personal taste. I personally switched from PC to Linux on my desktop and I just love it. But I still use XP for AutoCAD etc.
Actually, windows is just as good for photography anymore. The digital media world has changed, its about 50/50.
As for servers, I could easily argue that Windows is just as good as Linux on a server. Do not just assume windows is for games, its insulting. Windows does a hell of a good job in most fields.
@JamesManes You are absolutely right! It is good for very many things. I'm sorry for using the "games" exaple on Windows. Also, the US army uses lots of stuff. Not just linux.
Thin clients are almost completely gone, but they are neat. There are windows thinclients. Well used to be, but MS killed it because it did not take off in the 90s.
@JamesManes You say your a computer enthusiast, how can you say windows is better? Do you honestly believe it does everything on the desktop better then linux? You don't think that there are places where it is worse? What so black and white?
I have used linux for years. Still do on a secondary machine. It just does not do anything better than windows for end users. :/ I can't think of 1 thing it does better.
ESPECIALLY on laptops... bad battery life and runs hot.
@JamesManes I think you are not looking if you think it does nothing better. It is significantly faster. And I am running a laptop to post this, using linux mint actually. I get better battery life then windows 7 on it, and the only time it runs hot is when I am donating my extra processing power for research. Maybe it is just me, but I feel many things are better on linux. I for one find it more comfortable to program on.
Actually, most programs run slower in linux than in windows. For example firefox.. Firefox is dirt slow in linux and actually runs faster in wine than native linux.

@JamesManes I think the reason you don't see any good in linux is because you are not open to it ^ ^ Just like this comment, you will turn anything good you think you see into some kind of bug, or error, or something bad.
No, I have used linux on the desktop as a main for 3 years and kept using it as a secondary since then. It is not good for the desktop compared to windows or OS X.
That HP has an ATI card? Ok there is zero chance of you getting 6 hours in linux unless you just let it idle. There are people in forums complaining about linux battery life on that modle in karmic.
@JamesManes Not using karmic, and weather you say zero chance or not. Thats what I get, around 5-6. I do turn the brightness down however, but I do that on windows as well.
I can't seem to post the screen shot, but I don't see how it would help. I have about 70% left after an hour. But that is with a lot of stuff running. If I am not doing as much I get more.
@JamesManes Well, given. I do make the brightness low and don't use much apps when I get 6. and generally get 4 . However the point of this is, is that I get less with windows 7 on this same laptop. And I am not into this conversation enough to reinstall windows 7 to prove a point.
@JamesManes until you posted the link I thought you meant actually using it, not benchmarking. I get the same results benchmarking, but using it it is slower. And no, running it through wine is not enough to cause that much.
@JamesManes But, I thought I could talk to you normally, but, you admitted your a just a troll. So whatever I say you will deny, so...bye. I wish you went so we could continue this discussion :/. Anyway... You got me, good job. Your a successful troll.
@CultOfTheGlenda Oh come now, I don't think even JamesManes thinks that. That may have been true for Mint 1 and 2, it is not anymore. There is significant difference.
it is sad how so many nasty comments i have received on making fun of a computer!?! it's not like i was dogging out your mom or something!!! lol i guess there are many simple minds on youtube!?!?! i have owned mac and pc and they both had there pro's and con's XD
lol you could easily do this video with any computer or os. but i guess it was done with some linux on normal pc what would be cheaper than linux on mac.
it was a joke,, for years mac has always been the computer for high end video graphics and layout work for years. almost all newspapers use mac's.. but now this can be done with pc's too........

@thellomite
Nah, its 3 AM and I only flame to troll the fuck out of linfags.
JamesManes 1 year ago
@JamesManes "linfags"? - So.. did it hurt you? C'mon, tell us. We can handle it.
Thanks NVGrady! You too.
thellomite 1 year ago
@thellomite
linfag just means one who uses linux. Like winfag or macfag. Etc. Hurt? uhh what?
JamesManes 1 year ago
@JamesManes C'mon... you know... Did it /hurt/ you?... We can handle it, really.
thellomite 1 year ago
@JamesManes I am pretty such it does not mean one who uses linux...
I think it means, your acting like a retard for using that term :/ I was having a decently intelligent discussion with you before.
Emoobia 1 year ago
@Emoobia sure*
Emoobia 1 year ago
@Emoobia
Obviously not too intelligent, as you lied about battery life
JamesManes 1 year ago
@JamesManes Uhm... no I didn't. And as far as I know, you lied about firefox, I tried it under wine. It is no faster.

There 1 of my many sources.
JamesManes 1 year ago
@JamesManes That doesn't load at all.
Emoobia 1 year ago
@Emoobia
You must replace (DOT) with a .
JamesManes 1 year ago
@JamesManes I did, are you sure that is the right url? Ah I got it, I also did my own test, and I will show you the results in a video. Ok?
Emoobia 1 year ago
@Emoobia
Sure but remember this is not talking about application opening speed, its talking about javascript.
JamesManes 1 year ago
@JamesManes :/ hm, cause it does take twice as long to open you know. And loading pages is the same.
Emoobia 1 year ago
@JamesManes until you posted the link I thought you meant actually using it, not benchmarking. I get the same results benchmarking, but using it it is slower. And no, running it through wine is not enough to cause that much.
Emoobia 1 year ago
@JamesManes Why, hello, James. You must of missed this thread. Welcome back. - And about that link. Read the comments. You lazy boy, you.
thellomite 1 year ago
@JamesManes But, I thought I could talk to you normally, but, you admitted your a just a troll. So whatever I say you will deny, so...bye. I wish you went so we could continue this discussion :/. Anyway... You got me, good job. Your a successful troll.

@Emoobia whether* Please excuse my spelling.
Emoobia 1 year ago
@Emoobia PS. Mint is Ubuntu, so STFU.
CultOfTheGlenda 1 year ago
@CultOfTheGlenda It is not ^ ^ there is some optimizations. And anyway, I meant it is not karmic based. I'm using Mint 9. But same deal on 10.04
Emoobia 1 year ago
@Emoobia No just no. It is a green theme for Ubuntu; that is all; oh yeah and some codecs.
CultOfTheGlenda 1 year ago
@CultOfTheGlenda Oh come now, I don't think even JamesManes thinks that. That may have been true for Mint 1 and 2, it is not anymore. There is significant difference.
Emoobia 1 year ago
@Emoobia I think all Linux distros are basically the same. It is just the same packages organized differently. Holy fuck! So different!
CultOfTheGlenda 1 year ago
@CultOfTheGlenda Ok.
Emoobia 1 year ago
@Emoobia Faster? I can't help but laugh.
CultOfTheGlenda 1 year ago
@CultOfTheGlenda why is that?
Emoobia 1 year ago
@Emoobia Linux is a very slow OS.
CultOfTheGlenda 1 year ago
Yes, I feel free with the choice of Ubuntu.

That editing sucked big time. It jolted to the next clip of Vista and Mac screens and when it showed linux . The screen jolted at 00:18 .

p65ls 2 years ago
lol you could easily do this video with any computer or os. but i guess it was done with some linux on normal pc what would be cheaper than linux on mac.
isokessu 2 years ago 3
What makes you think it was done with a Mac?
GarthofNEaB 2 years ago 3

BunnyEnterprisesInc 2 years ago
No, all of linux foundations vidoes are done on linux machines, using far superior software than any of MAC's.
JoshyNapalm 2 years ago 2
if it's real then must be very pathetic.
So pathetic that i can't describe.
IF you made this video on Mac OSX or Windows , or you used any virtual machine running windows , then you SUCK a lot man.

Wow. Excellent. That is the perfect way to put it. It would also be great for Television.

Big Buck Bunny's source code is available under a FOSS license. I would love to see the source code to this commercial (similarly licensed) so they could keep growing. Others could learn a lot and contribute some surprises. Linux would take off and special credit, marketing, and business would accrue to jean-pierre feicht and picture-visions.

This is truly awesome ... Tells the very essential point of using linux without "harassing" the other systems + It's done with beauty and elegance.
