Heavens to Ravi Shankar! THANKS for posting this cool clip! I was a teenager when this show ran on the late night ABC lineup & don't recall ever watching it. Though I did see the very droll Mr Bishop in the mid-70's as a substitue host for Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show". You've MADE my day & my week! CHEERS!
Since Bishop went head-to-head against Johnny Carson, this show only lasted two-and-a-half years.
I believe the show was done at 8:30 P.M. PT to air live in the East at 11:30 ET/10:30 CT, in the hope that being broadcast live would give the show more excitement.
Here, Regis shows some of the stuff that has since made him one of America's most-liked TV personalities.
Regis Philbin was destined, even then, to become a star. Thankfully, it happened.
"You guys look darling." I'll say. It is a shame that the nehru jacket never quite caught on as an American fashion statement. I hate ties and the advantage of this style is the lack of tieness.
Good Show! I still remember watching Joey Bishop every night, still in Black and White in the late sixties in Toronto. I was very upset when Rogers cable stopped Joey and started Dick Cavett instead!
I'm glad to be able to watch these video's now. Greetings from Holland, Andrew.
Johnny Mann is still around. He produced the famous original jingles for "93/KHJ." KFRC and the other Bill Drake-programmed Top 40 stations. The date of this Joey bishop Show is February 2, 1968.
@goo4ssie I saw it, just by luck. I always switched btw Carson, Bishop, and whatever was on locally. Regis was probably influenced by Jack Paar's famous walkout years earlier. Regis and Joey were talking and right away you could tell it was serious ,Joey was like a deer in headlights, it was completely real. Regis was in tears saying something I and likely 95% of the audience didn't get about his leaving, then split. Total silence. Later I learned he had heard some ABC execs panned him.
On this clip, it looks like General Electric PE-250's were used (ABC, in the late 1960's, was all over the map, with some of their studios using Norelco PC-60 or 70 cameras, and others using GE PE-250 or 350's).
And I guess GE PE-350's were also used by Mississippi Public Broadcasting in the '70s -- when they were Mississippi ETV -- to tape Clyde Frog and other shows during that time (dunno what brand they switched to in the '80s but Sony cameras would replace them in the '90s).
I still have my neru medallion chain just like Joey's. I got it in 1967 when I was in the 7th grade. Hey he had a long life 89 years, a great ride, I always liked Joey Bishop..
I love the jackets. Bring them back.

The jacket looks like something an extra would wear in the old Planet of the Apes

Bishop's Nehru jacket is fucking sharp. Regis' looks like something a 90-year-old woman would wear.

Yep. Still not funny.

Nehru jackets---just like Ken "The Hawk" Harrelson from that SI cover in the summer of 1968. I think Hawk's was olive green.....
