I'm looking for a good practice gun for my son... He's a 80 pounder 10yo. I like the grip for the P22 but I'm also considering the Ruger 22 45 & HP22 Rangemaster (PhoenixArms). Any thoughts on which would be a better pistol. Thanks and great video.
@arawtgabi The P22 would probably be an excellent practice gun for someone just getting started. It is lighter than the 22/45 and maybe the HP22, thereby getting the new shooter used to some recoil yet not a real heavy piece to be holding out in front of them. However, the trigger pull of the P22 is certainly not what I would call light, or smooth, as a pistol more suited for shooting targets on the range.
Good video, I use the same method as you do for reassembly, but I must admit there was a good deal of swearing and cursing involved before I figured it out. In fact, when I bought my p22 for some reason the plastic pin was actually stuck in the pistol case under the foam. I swear someone was trying to mess with my head! All the other components; the grip inserts, front sights, and the locking key for the gun were all in a plastic bag as they should have been, but not the pin. That sure was fun.
I've only had perfect success using Remington Golden Bullets. I do dump the ammo into a tshirt, then run the rounds around with my fingers to get the gold dust to stick to the tshirt, then put the rounds back in the box. I've used cci and those still jam up the gun.
I am curious . I have bought a used Walyher P22. I noticed it had the original magazine that would constantly mis-fire. So i purchased the upgraded magazine from S&W and it works perfect useing 40 gr. ammo(CCI Mini Mags) last summmer. Any how. i want to try the CCI Stinger but, have read that it is not enough power to chamber slide back and foroward. Would you not recommend this ammo before i buy? And also the other ammo i want to try is the CCI shot shell type, Has any one tried this ammo?
@ssl668 I don't have any experience with the CCI Stinger, but just off hand I don't know why they wouldn't work just fine. Maybe someone else will comment that has actually used them.
@ssl668 CCI Stinger feeds in my P22 fine, mine stovepiped a lot with those and a few other types of ammo initially, but after putting in a new Volquartsen (sp?) extractor I found at midway (I believe it was midway), that problem stopped completely.
Heavier 40 grain bullets run well in this gun. They do require lubricating. Put white lithum grease on the rails and slide. My dad used this on machine guns in the army. It makes the gun work well. I used some 40 year old lithum grease on mine. I use white lithum on on my Glocks, Sigs, and 1911s. Also use break free or remington spray oil also. You can find white lithum grease on at automative stores. Great video, informative, helpful and to the point. Thank you!
Very informative -- Thanks! Next time I'll go with your method of reassembly, it looks like a much better way of doing things. Other than dealing with that spring when putting it back together, I've had no complaints. All I've used are CCI Mini Mags and no problems yet. I love my P22!
Walther could have avoided the reassembly problems with a better manual. With such a long history as this gun has, I would think they would have improved the literature by now. I have feed problems with my late model P22 only with the last round in the magazine, and only once about 100 rounds or so.
so if you grease you rails this is a great gun i even carry this gun everyday so from target shooting to everyday carry three months no cleaning just shoot 30 rounds of federal ammo cheap stuff has to have a 1000 rounds though it ive cat and dog hair in it probly should clean it now and with the bulk packs at .03 a bullet talk about fun
the walther is a hundred percent great gun no flaws if you know a gun smith this what he said to me cause it misfired everything ftf not cycling right so he took the gun a part put all purpose greese on the slide rails with a qtip now i can shoot any ammo so for 1.97 i think the tube was i can shoot any ammo federal winchester cci blazer all the cheap shit hell i aint cleaned it in three months use it today 30 rounds flawless
Thanks for your help, I have continued to work with it and finally got it. Appreciate your video, it was very informative, and very well done. Who says you can't teach old dogs new tricks...
You make reassembly look easy, however my 74 year old fingers have not been able to compress the spring and reassemble as shown. Is there a way to relax the spring presssure??
@butterd1937 Well, no... not that I know of. My fingers are nearly that old, and I didn't manipulate it correctly the first couple of times either. However, if you try it a few times, you might be surprised that it just takes a little practice to pinch the rod tightly. Though, if you try and can't get it, then I would simply use the little rod they supply, and go back to the way described by the manufacturer.
This is an excellent video made by someone who actually knows the nomenclature of the firearm. Obviously you're very experienced and knowledgeable with firearms. This seems rare on You Tube. Most other P22 videos I've watched were made by kids who didn't know the name of any part other than the trigger. I really liked your trick for installing the recoil spring and guide rod. Very well done! Thanks for making this video.
@UsernameToGo Thanks for the kind words. It's true... I've been around handguns for a good many years. If this little video was of interest to you, then I'm glad.
Perhaps you need to review the video: "Walther P22 Issues and Problems" on YouTube, We doubt Walther's pistol has any redeeming qualities whatsoever. Not to mention, the slide release is still plastic and while heated, it continues to fall, bullets get stuck, etc. Nor do we appreciate their lack of consideration for any restitution and or reimbursement for this extraordinary crappy pistol!
@1LonePuma You might want to consider taking it to a local gun show and trading if for something more to your liking. Your opinion is one among many, and it appears not everyone shares your thoughts or consensus.
excellent piece. also a golf ball launcher from cheaper than dirt (with a few unmentionable additions) and CCI sub-sonics can easily make this a hush-hush plinker that will keep your neighbors guessing why all the birds keep falling from the sky
Good commentary and tips, but I would rather just buy a Kel-Tec PF9 for the same money, more stopping power, and ease of cleaning. But nothing is more fun than shooting a .22.
@allexcosta That is another option. However, if the buyer just wants the peace of mind of owning a small, lightweight .22, and they don't have a truckload of money, they must look at other alternatives. And, in that regard, the Walther P22 is not a bad one.
Great video - I'm in the market for a P22 and wanted to know how to disassemble/reassemble the weapon so I can thoroughly inspect one. This fit the bill.
your explination of how to get the rail back on the gun by compressing the spring, and holding the rod is awesome. pretty obvious after you see it, but would have helped if i watched your video first.... :D took me 3 minutes to get it back together.
It appears that some of the P22s perform differently, and it is kind of hard to tell exactly why. If yours is a recent build model, then I would expect it should operate fine with about any kind of ammo you want to put through it. Of course, cleaning is important, but that is true about any pistol. I have shot the cheap Walmart ammo in mine and only experience the occasional dud round, but no feed problems.
I was just wondering, I'm new to the gun scene (I just received a P22 for my birthday, first gun ever) and I'm looking stay away from the "reliability" problems people have been coming to grips with, is there really "goob/better/best" ammo? or is it a lack of cleaning/maintenance? or maybe both?
i guess there is alot of lemons in this gun but i can tell you i love my walther, as long as i use plated bullets i operates flawlessly, i have the older model with the older mags, the main problem with this gun is improper cleaning, .22 is the dirtiest round there is, the gun needs to be completly stripped to fully clean all of the residue out, dont listen to the b.s., this is a great gun
i own 2 of these finely made guns and cant say i have ever had a jam issue with either one and that being said i have shot around 20,000 rounds through them both..a few patches some hoppes #9 and rem oil go along way keep em clean and dont buy value pack ammo ..i love them
Yea I agree. Early models had issues. I recently bought one that was manufactured in 2011. And I can visibly see where they made some critical changes in the magazine, and in the chamber that virtually eliminates feeding and extracting issues. I am very satisfied with this weapon. If I had to state a flaw, I'd say just getting the gun back together can be frustrating at times. But once you get the hang of it. There's no issues.
I have a Walther P22. It is about a year old. I have shot over 3000 rounds of ammo in it. Mine is very picky with ammo but if I use CCI ammo it runs just about perfect.
This is my first gun. Putting the gun together using the plastic guide rod is no big deal. After you do it a few times it is real easy.
@themattlyone Thanks for your comments and telling of your experiences. Near as I can tell our weapons are about the same age. I have only ever used the cheap Federal ammo from Wally World, and it seems to like it just fine. I'm glad mine is not picky about ammo because I enjoy just plinking with it. Yes, assembly with the plastic rod is easy, but if you are ever in a position where you don't have the rod with you, I guess it would be good if you could do it without using the rod.
@themattlyone My P22 doesn't do very well with the Federal ammo. Using Remington .22 rounds I did not have a single misfire, when I switched to the Federal ammo it was jamming left and right.
@themattlyone eventhough the poster said his fired federal ammo ok.. mine does not.. (evey gun is different and you really just have to try all the availible ammo before you find the perfect match in ammo)... mine also does well with most cci ammo (stingers, velicoters, sgb's, quik-shot's) but sometimes has a problem with the minni-mags and the cci 'standard' ammo.. as far as 'cheap' rounds go, maybe try the blazers, they work almost flawlessly in mine..
My last to letters on the barrel are "BA" does that mean it was manufactured in 2010? I haven't had any problems but I bought this gun in a 2 gun set with a walther 380. Matching serial numbers and all. Just wanna make sure I have the newest model. My mag also ends in a B
@nniebish Yes, BA should be mfgd in 2010, and the B version of the magazine is the latest (and improved) version. I shot my P22 at the range about a week ago, and had no feed problems at all. Only thing I had were two mis-fires, but that is the cheap WalMart ammo that I was running through it. I jacked them out and put them back in the magazine and they fired okay the second time.
I am a gunsmith and gun shop owner and Just ordered one for a freind a couple days ago. I am Returning it after trying 5 or 6 different types of ammo. On 2 separate range sessions. Multiple problems, with all ammo, HP round nose Fiocchi, remington, blazer, etc. Stuck in chamber failure to feed, last shot no hold open, failure to fire round in chamber.
@UtahGunSmith I wonder if you cleaned the factory grease out of the gun first. If so, it sounds like you got an extremely "tight" P22 and could have some out of tolerance parts in it. Probably it would get better with more use, but if I were you, I would send it back and try another, or perhaps get that one fixed. I hope you checked the date code on the barrel and on the clip, and that you did get a "late" model gun with the revised magazine. Your experience is not typical.
We cleaned it and oiled very well with Break Free, I been reading on here allot of similar type stuff with this gun. Googel or Type in Walther p22 jamming or Walther p22 problems and you will be all day reading and watching vids.
Check this guys vid on here. user name: tactical review Tiltle of vid: Walther P22 Issues and Problems
@UtahGunSmith You didn't say what the date codes were on your gun. Yup... there's a lot of old videos out there complaining about the earlier versions of the P22. I've probably watched more than you have. Have you sent it back yet.... that's what I would do.
@UtahGunSmith The serial number starting with L does not signify the year it was built. Only the date code on the barrel can reveal that piece of information. Also, the magazine MUST be a "B" version, or you have an OLD magazine (that did have problems). As a dealer, you must know that a supplier can ship you old stock, if that is what they have on hand. My video describes very well how to discern what year it was mfgd, and also where to find the "B" on the magazine.
Reply To: BoomChaRhythm Wouldnt think that they would have old stock laying around with the popularity of this gun especially in military green version. and the way most gun sales have been for the past couple years not allot og guns have dust on them. if they do then they aqre not to popular. . Magazine is a B version.
bravo man. most informative p22 video on the web. on my first field strip of the gun, i was able to get the spring and guide rod back in place, and fit the slide back into position, but at that point, i was unable to move the slide back into it's resting position. i didn't know that i had to put pressure on the hammer so my slide would progress. i wonder if this is just an early model problem. i hope i don't have malfunction in my future. bought the piece yesterday, but saw it was the old model
Thank you very much for the tip abt how to get that pesky spring back in after cleaning! The tip abt getting the take down button was also useful. I do appreciate your effort to make the video, and your oral directions are very clear. Great job!
Thanks for the comprehensive detailed verbal instructions and photos. Please provide other gun disassembly details if you have time. Your instructions are the best I have seen. Thanks again.
Appreciate you taking time to make the video. I have a P22 with 2k rounds through it. It's been a real pig. In a tie with my GSG as the worst gun I've ever owned.
I think this is a good pistol overall considering the warranty support. By that, I mean that I bought one about 8 months ago and over the course of about 4 months I fired around 350 rds through it. In that time, I noticed significant dentents on the bottom side of the slide where the trigger ears ride. The last time I fired the weapon and broke it down for cleaning, I noticed the right hand side of the trigger ear had cracked and was about to fall off. The manufacture has fixed this issue...
well done, complete & informative. I have an older P22 & with 3800 rounds thru & it has seen better days. I had the barrel replaced because a live round was sent INTO THE BARREL followed by a double shot resulting in a buldged barrel. S&W was not going to fix the problem BUT by accident they sent me a barrel (with a screw) NOT ALLOWED IN CALIFORNIA. So to hush the whole thing up they told me to send it back & they fixed it. It still will not hold open on emply chamber mainly but it shoots. J
i got my p22 about 2 weeks ago, i have put over 1000 rounds through it and it has amazed me in almost every way! i havent had a prob cycling every thing from high quality HV rounds to cheap sub sonic rounds! the only thing that will not cycle in it is aguila's super colibri, which have no powder and fire only on the force of the primer! i love this little gun cant wait to get a suppressor for it!
Very well made video with great quality pics. But, I didnt hear you adress any of the previous problems this "Weapon" had. So I would say not really the truth rather than a disassembly video. I bought one of the p22 a few days ago, all I can say is I hope it feeds better once its broken in. So far I am not to impressed.
@jmikeslater Is it a late model P22? Does the magazine have a 'B' as the final letter? You can actually hasten the break in time if you will polish the hammer with an Arkansas Stone. This can be done without taking the gun apart. Polish it until the slide will move quite smoothly over the face of the hammer.
@BoomChaRhythm One of the most informative videos, especially the date stamp and the B on the magazine. I had researched this, but you're the only one to address it. My wife's P22 had FTF probs but instead of polishing the hammer, I filed it down as it was indeed impeding the flow of the slide. I filed too much and now upon firing a round, the hammer won't stay back, it comes back up ready for double action. No more failures to feed buy my wife is really angry. I need to order a new hammer.
I just finally bought a p22 2 days ago, and it has far exceeded my expectations. Not a hickup or jam in 100rounds so far. Very accurate, I expected a couple jams in any gun but a glock during break-in, but so far nothing. Mine is the AK , which is 09, so they have definitely worked the bugs out of it. Im sooo happy with this gun.
I sold my first p22 in 2008 to upgrade to Glock 19. But I missed it so much I just bought another one a month ago. Feed it crap ammo like Thunderbolt and it will jam. Ever since I started using Blazer bulk box ZERO problems. It really is a great gun...
Thanks. I recently purchased a Walther P22, and this video cleared up several issues I had in disassembly / assembly of the weapon. There are some jamming issues with the P22 but that's due to design flaws. Otherwise, field testing of the pistol is fun.
excellent video, im right on the verge of buying a p22 and a ruger 10/22, the bad things i heard started to worry me, but recent videos about new models have given me hope. Have you tried the target model? its all they have at a local retailer and im wondering exactly what the pros and cons are
@tronclay By target model, I assume you mean the p22 fitted with a 5" barrel. No, I've not tried it. I would have to assume the target model would no doubt have the same action and characteristic as mine, just with a longer barrel. As a fun little plinker that doesn't cost much to operate, the p22 is a good choice.
Thank you for creating and sharing your video. I have tried many times to compress the recoil spring over the guide rod as you have shown so that I can insert it into the slide without the supplied plastic dowel. I have a very difficult time holding it in place without it slipping through the tips of my fingers.
@jdeluisa If you will wipe all traces of oil off the guide rod, before trying to hold onto it, it will work a lot better for you. Then, once the pistol is back together, jack the slide open and add just a drop of oil to the guide rod. It really doesn't need much lubrication for good operation. It is more important to have the internals of the slide and the barrel lubricated. Hope this helps.

I'm looking for a good practice gun for my son... He's a 80 pounder 10yo. I like the grip for the P22 but I'm also considering the Ruger 22 45 & HP22 Rangemaster (PhoenixArms). Any thoughts on which would be a better pistol. Thanks and great video.
arawtgabi 1 week ago
@arawtgabi The P22 would probably be an excellent practice gun for someone just getting started. It is lighter than the 22/45 and maybe the HP22, thereby getting the new shooter used to some recoil yet not a real heavy piece to be holding out in front of them. However, the trigger pull of the P22 is certainly not what I would call light, or smooth, as a pistol more suited for shooting targets on the range.

@themattlyone My P22 doesn't do very well with the Federal ammo. Using Remington .22 rounds I did not have a single misfire, when I switched to the Federal ammo it was jamming left and right.
jdleland 6 months ago
This is a great video, thanks for posting. I think your way of re-assembling sounds great, I'll try it next time I take mine apart.
jdleland 6 months ago

My mag also ends in a B
nniebish 10 months ago
@nniebish Yes, BA should be mfgd in 2010, and the B version of the magazine is the latest (and improved) version. I shot my P22 at the range about a week ago, and had no feed problems at all. Only thing I had were two mis-fires, but that is the cheap WalMart ammo that I was running through it. I jacked them out and put them back in the magazine and they fired okay the second time.

slide is still made cheap of pot metal!
ChloeeIsFat 10 months ago
@ChloeeIsFat pot metal?!?! Are you saying I can smoke it?! JK yea the slide isnt the best quality, but its still a great gun.

UtahGunSmith 11 months ago

He really explains why it's all happening.
UtahGunSmith 11 months ago
@UtahGunSmith You didn't say what the date codes were on your gun. Yup... there's a lot of old videos out there complaining about the earlier versions of the P22. I've probably watched more than you have. Have you sent it back yet.... that's what I would do.

Reply to: BoomChaRhythm serial number starts with an L, Just got it new from stock at Davidsons
UtahGunSmith 11 months ago
@UtahGunSmith The serial number starting with L does not signify the year it was built. Only the date code on the barrel can reveal that piece of information. Also, the magazine MUST be a "B" version, or you have an OLD magazine (that did have problems). As a dealer, you must know that a supplier can ship you old stock, if that is what they have on hand. My video describes very well how to discern what year it was mfgd, and also where to find the "B" on the magazine.
BoomChaRhythm 11 months ago
Reply To: BoomChaRhythm Wouldnt think that they would have old stock laying around with the popularity of this gun especially in military green version. and the way most gun sales have been for the past couple years not allot og guns have dust on them. if they do then they aqre not to popular. . Magazine is a B version.

great video!! thank you

bravo man. most informative p22 video on the web. on my first field strip of the gun, i was able to get the spring and guide rod back in place, and fit the slide back into position, but at that point, i was unable to move the slide back into it's resting position. i didn't know that i had to put pressure on the hammer so my slide would progress. i wonder if this is just an early model problem. i hope i don't have malfunction in my future. bought the piece yesterday, but saw it was the old model

In a tie with my GSG as the worst gun I've ever owned.
decimatorcortez 1 year ago
I think this is a good pistol overall considering the warranty support. By that, I mean that I bought one about 8 months ago and over the course of about 4 months I fired around 350 rds through it. In that time, I noticed significant dentents on the bottom side of the slide where the trigger ears ride. The last time I fired the weapon and broke it down for cleaning, I noticed the right hand side of the trigger ear had cracked and was about to fall off. The manufacture has fixed this issue...
slobra3000 1 year ago
well done, complete & informative. J

i got my p22 about 2 weeks ago, i have put over 1000 rounds through it and it has amazed me in almost every way! i havent had a prob cycling every thing from high quality HV rounds to cheap sub sonic rounds! the only thing that will not cycle in it is aguila's super colibri, which have no powder and fire only on the force of the primer! i love this little gun cant wait to get a suppressor for it!
theWOLVERINE69 1 year ago
Very well made video with great quality pics. But, I didnt hear you adress any of the previous problems this "Weapon" had. So I would say not really the truth rather than a disassembly video. I bought one of the p22 a few days ago, all I can say is I hope it feeds better once its broken in. So far I am not to impressed.
jmikeslater 1 year ago
@jmikeslater Is it a late model P22? Does the magazine have a 'B' as the final letter? You can actually hasten the break in time if you will polish the hammer with an Arkansas Stone. This can be done without taking the gun apart. Polish it until the slide will move quite smoothly over the face of the hammer.
BoomChaRhythm 1 year ago
@BoomChaRhythm One of the most informative videos, especially the date stamp and the B on the magazine. I had researched this, but you're the only one to address it. My wife's P22 had FTF probs but instead of polishing the hammer, I filed it down as it was indeed impeding the flow of the slide. I filed too much and now upon firing a round, the hammer won't stay back, it comes back up ready for double action. No more failures to feed buy my wife is really angry. I need to order a new hammer.
oldairforcedude 1 year ago
I just finally bought a p22 2 days ago, and it has far exceeded my expectations. Not a hickup or jam in 100rounds so far. Very accurate, I expected a couple jams in any gun but a glock during break-in, but so far nothing. Mine is the AK , which is 09, so they have definitely worked the bugs out of it. Im sooo happy with this gun.
sisco3IS1 1 year ago
I sold my first p22 in 2008 to upgrade to Glock 19. But I missed it so much I just bought another one a month ago. Feed it crap ammo like Thunderbolt and it will jam. Ever since I started using Blazer bulk box ZERO problems. It really is a great gun...
razgriz76 1 year ago
@razgriz76 If you break it in a little... several hundred rounds, I bet it will get better. They do need a little break-in time.
BoomChaRhythm 1 year ago
Thanks. I recently purchased a Walther P22, and this video cleared up several issues I had in disassembly / assembly of the weapon. There are some jamming issues with the P22 but that's due to design flaws. Otherwise, field testing of the pistol is fun.
dcon56 1 year ago
@dcon56 Thanks for the comments about my video. So far I've not experienced any jamming problems with my pistol.

excellent video, im right on the verge of buying a p22 and a ruger 10/22, the bad things i heard started to worry me, but recent videos about new models have given me hope. Have you tried the target model? its all they have at a local retailer and im wondering exactly what the pros and cons are
tronclay 1 year ago
@tronclay By target model, I assume you mean the p22 fitted with a 5" barrel. No, I've not tried it. I would have to assume the target model would no doubt have the same action and characteristic as mine, just with a longer barrel. As a fun little plinker that doesn't cost much to operate, the p22 is a good choice.
BoomChaRhythm 1 year ago
Thank you for creating and sharing your video. I have tried many times to compress the recoil spring over the guide rod as you have shown so that I can insert it into the slide without the supplied plastic dowel. I have a very difficult time holding it in place without it slipping through the tips of my fingers.
jdeluisa 1 year ago
@jdeluisa If you will wipe all traces of oil off the guide rod, before trying to hold onto it, it will work a lot better for you. Then, once the pistol is back together, jack the slide open and add just a drop of oil to the guide rod. It really doesn't need much lubrication for good operation. It is more important to have the internals of the slide and the barrel lubricated. Hope this helps.
