You are right, they are hermanns! The male is probably 10-20 yrs. old, & the female is probably 5-10 yrs. old. I got both of them from someone else so I don't know their exact ages but I do know the female was fed all the wrong foods before she got to me as you can see for her size and deformed shell. We had some financial problems so a friend of mine took them, he has many different tortoises & they are in good care but I sure do miss them!! Especially my girl she was so much fun!

ahh thanks, i have 2 hermanns, they look very similar size but are only 2 and 3 years old, as you say the diet would make a big difference and i agree they are expensive to properly look after, i've been told they must be 8 years before they can successfully mate so i'll wait till i wake up in the morning to the sound of a little squeeking tortoise :D thanks

Nope actually the little one is probably at least 5 to 10 yrs older than the big one. Females generally get larger than males but in this case someone who had my girl previously overfed her and this caused her large size.

Ok boy you confuse me...first you ask my advice and then you berate me? I found this tortoise in a pet shop in a 150 gal tank, she was very unhappy. I took her home and cared for her for a year. She has now been placed in the wonderful, loving hands of a very experienced caretaker. You should get your facts before you start cussing on someone elses videos...Also, you are calling the kettle black here r u not? Your own tortoise suffers from paramiding!

Thank you Mark! I thought it was meant towards me. The truth is ALOT of owners misfeed their torts and it can be easy to do when they beg and we feel sorry for them! One of the reasons I rehomed my torts was because I felt that I could not provide them the care that my friend does at that time. I do hope to get some tortoises again when times are better though, they are wonderful pets for responsible people! Thank you for your response!

It sounds like it has an upper respitory infection and can kill him if he is not treated by a vet. I would suggest taking him Monday if at all possible. Good luck!

mine too. I got Star Tortoise... avoid putting it out in rain. Check out books on tortoise. They can get really sick with flu, and that can last for a long time. However, mine survive. Good luck

Yes it was successful, she had 2 eggs but they were not good. It was possible that because these two tortoises were not the same exact sub species that the eggs were infertile because of this. Although I no longer have the tortoise:( I've been told by the new owner that she has had two eggs this year and they are fertile. The owner has the exact sub specie match for her so we are hoping things are good.

It was easy to catch on video because thats all the male ever thinks about!lol They weren't kept together so when you put them together he'd try, I grabbed the camera after I realized she was interested. The generally mate in the spring/summer but if they are not hibernated they can mate anytime though its not the best idea. These are Eastern Hermanns Tortoises. Thanks!

Hi Joe...you can definitely tell male from female. The females tail is fatter & shorter, the clocia is closer to the shell. On the male his tail is much longer & has a hook on the end. I believe yours are too young to mate yet. Unless you have 2 females to 1 male he could stress your female out & this could kill her so keeping them together once he shows signs of mating isn't a good idea. The male can be rough even flipping the female over so be careful housing them together! Good luck!

Male tortoise do have a penis, they also have a long tail with a hook at the end to help them grab hold of the female. The penis is on the tail and you would only see it during sex or if he decided to flash you:)

No they were duds as you can imagine because of the size difference. It actually turns out that even though they are the same species they are not from the same sub-specie. They are both now living with a friend of mine who has the correct boyfriend and girlfriends to breed them with! I can wait!

I am not for sure of their ages but the previous owner had him for 10+ years and I've been told he is much older than that. I know that she is at least 4-5 years old or may be a bit older than that.

The males are generally much smaller than the females in most tprtoise species. The females usually get up to about 7" or so as they age but she is already 9" long and not old at all. She is rare, I've only seen one other tortoise her size and breed. It would be great to hear from others who breed hermann tortoises that are of this size!

Yeah she had 2 eggs 3 weeks ago coming this Friday. Both eggs have chalked and one looks like it might have veins I see a red line in it when I candle it. They are being incubated in a Little Giant incubator. I try to keep my blog updated at turtletimes dot com user Kellie B. and there is a pic of the eggs the day she laid them. Thanks for asking!!
