  • These new rules absolutely suck...judo was never intended to limit the use of bringing someone to the ground...short of striking, any way you take someone to the ground should be legal...the easterners need to expand their minds instead of limiting potential

  • With new rules like these, and monkeying about with grips, it's starting to become only a short, thin hop from judo to aikido -- where you can marvel at your artistry while the real combat sports mock you from a far distance.

At least sambo is keeping it real.

  • dude, leg grappling is not completely banned, though I agree with new rules because westerners used to use just muscle while doing Judo, and what judo is really meant to be(as a sport) is a sport of technique.

If you dont like the new rules, go weight lifting...

  • Judo is not a fight but a art . If a art become ugly cause of efficacy it must be cleaned from junk moves .

Bruce Lee moves are so elegant compared to MMA efficacy - the reason is for a spiritual , elegant technique . I agree with new rules .

  • 1. All of your "boring" clips are from the leg grab era.

    2. Leg grabs are still legal. Just not retard-style.

    3. The ever lowering standard for ippon is a much bigger problem than leg grabs.

  • you have a clear opinion... i think allmost everybody liked old rules

  • Im sorry but I dont like the new rules. I have been fighting for over 30 years and now half of my throws have been band. Im sure Im not the only old judoka to feel this way.

  • I think the new rules are good. Remember! It is still allowed to use leg attacks as a counter or combination. And if you all look at other teqniques then te guruma and kata guruma etc you will find a lot of nice trows. The old judo is back! Thats very good.

  • Well I'm not going to sound like a child throwing a fit. I have more of a problem with the grips. No more body locks, over the shoulder grips and shit like that.

  • after almost 1 year , i use to do judo under the new rule. BUT i still think the rule is very Stupid! Eventually, we playing the table tennis on the mat!( very safety and absolutely not like martial art!) Another prbblem is the the new rule is very unclear!

    Like this

  • judo is an awsome sport but the IJF as messed it up. no longer will I be participating in competition. I guess I will do BJJ.

  • This new rule is very disappointing as it shows we judokas are just a bunch of cowards. We are basically telling the world that "Oh since we can't defend against leg attacks, so we just make rules in our competitions to avoid them" ... PATHETIC!

Ever wonder why BJJ is much more "effective" and popular for combat applications? Because they don't cry...and whinge... they learn & adapt.

I really dont want to see judo one day become what Tae Kwon Do has become, a pseudo martial art for sissys..

  • @lilhonki I agree with you. The same thing that happened with TAEKWONDO in the Olympics will happen with Judo if these news rules become the norm!.... Garbage, sorry if anyone gets offended. The new Rules got to go! A throw is a throw no matter how it came to happen. Just like a puck or kick is just a punch or kick! If it works for you, use it. That is why I respect Brazilian Martial Artist, they take any art and use it to it's fullest form and then some...

  • im an ex wrestler ex bjj'er but then again you never leave those behind and i just started judo and i do think that judo could revise its rules and strategy i do think my idea of the 2 ippon rule is applicable it make the fight more rounded

  • i agree lets keep the leg grabs just dont score them dont score any "rolling" throws and there ya go the offense would then have to use ne waza to win

how about this rule: 2 ippons to win in the old days of judo you would have to 1st throw them then submit them

thats why judo got as popular as it is now becuase the contest used to cover all aspects of judo get them to the ground and make sure you hurt them then make them surrender or maim them

    just a suggestion

  • getting rid of stuff like kata guruma is ridiculous tho

  • at least three of these first eight examples are allowed under the new rules, possibly more cannot tell because of edit too late in action to see if combination r counter involved. cross grip leg attacks are good, counters by leg attack good, combination another real attack then leg grab attack good.

New rules not most judo peoples choice as we all in our dojo prefer more inclusive rules not exclusive...

  • leg attacks are part of Judo.

  • I feel that to take away our ability to attack legs is pulling us away from our art. Fighters should just learn how to defend from it.

  • @bryanwynn06 True. But judo looks more and more like wrestling if every body grabs the legs. When I fight with this big heavy football player he just stays low to the tatami and tries to grab my leg..... once he's got it he just lifts me up and throws me. Than I lose in judo to this not a judoka .... But that was no 'real judo' ...

  • My teacher had dinner with a higher belt rank I forget what it was, he is a sixth dan. The consensus was the majority of judo teachers don't like the new rule change. They both expect at local levels of competition the rules will not be in effect. In my opinion it dumbs down Judo, by not allowing every throw in the Kodokan you are essentially biasing Judo. I want leg throws because I want to be able to reliably defend against one from a wrestler.

  • I believe that you are exaggerating a bit much in this video. I mean you are making it seem like judo is dead because of the new rule, but look at your "I Love Judo" video. That video features many throws other than leg grabs. The reason why they implemented this rule was because judo was becoming too much like wrestling. However i think that judogo4it has a good idea about still allowing leg grabs but not scoring.

  • I do bjj but also like judo. I was excited to watch the judo event at the last olympics and I gotta say I was disappointed. Clearly this video is showing back to back boring matches but what I saw was far from this. I think anything that makes the sport more entertaining and the techniques more relevant and applicable is great. I don't think judo would ever be confused for wrestling but they're bot grappling. Watching matches like these is like bjj matches where guys just lay on each other.

  • I second that. The 2008 olympics were a bit disappointing. At the 2009 Jr. Worlds when the new leg grab rules were implemented, there was a lot of "pretty judo" and more matches won by ippon and i expect to see more of it in the near future.

  • Thanks. I'll see if I can find some footage.

  • makes judo better to watch for the uninitiated however makes judo less effective as a combat sport . another reason to take up bjj i guess

  • does kata guruma count in this new rule?

  • Comment removed

  • yep

  • Since jan 1st 2010 it does.

Thiago (Tomate)

  • I think its bullcrap, it makes judo less effective and transferable to combat, and it makes judokas close their minds to other possibilities, if its not dangerous, why get rid of it for competition?? Bullcrap rule.

  • nothing will be extinct ...

we just have to use our inteligence to apply the tecnics.

romember guys judo is for intelligents...

  • you can still do them if you use it as a combo, or a counter...they are not getting rid of them completely

  • I have the solution! Keep leg grabs , but dont award a score for them! That way, you can still go for a pin and people will also discover the forgotten aspects of judo!

  • @judogo4it

Now why couldn't they come up with that.

  • this is a big advantage for the japanese...

  • You could have also shown Inoue's uchi mata... It was not neutral

  • In traditional Kodokan Judo you can see many techniques in which you have to grab the legs. But even then as a Judoka you have a lot of other techniques that works just fine too. I think the important thing is to encourage competitors to use a more wide variety of Judo techniques, and not only focus on leg grabs. But, If there is a chance to get ippon whit a leg grab technique, I think it is good as well.

  • wtf why the hell would you want to take out leg grabs its a massive part of judoo

  • please no.

the kata guruma and other BEAUTIFUL techniques will be extinct ):

  • that would make judo a very unrealistic fighting-sport. leg-graps are not dangerous, so keep them in judo.

  • I`m against the anti leg grabbing rules because I think judo should keep evolving. Judokas must learn how to counter these techniques.

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • definately keep them in. judo is about using uke's movement against them using throws and if that includes holding the leg (not necessarily the fabric though) then leg grabs should stay.

remember it also started with leg and spine locks and although it was probably a good idea to ban those, i think we should stay as close as posible to the original sport =]

  • The idea of removing leg grabs is to return judo to it's original form. I'm undecided.

  • YES. Judo should be a sport clearly distinc from MMA and wrestling. Focus on the well known judo techniques will result in the survival of judo as a sport.

  • i say keep em...ive always loved leg throws...and love it when people try them on me...they give u an advantage when ur going against someone like double ur size lol

  • we have to stop some legs graps because it's not really the judo , judo has got many throws like the seoi or tai otoshi ect but some leg graps like kata guruma or te guruma must to be keeping . :)

  • This new rules SUCKS. Give MORE FREEEDOM to the fighters!!

  • you are still allowed to do all leg grabbing techniques its just you have to palm grab the legs or palm them ! what you are not allowed to do is grab the judo pants!

  • you can still grab the leg you just can't grab the pants anymore so you can still do all the techniques but just don't grab the pants.

  • Leg grabs may be removed in 2010. They are trying the new rule(s) at the juniors to see how they work. The way I understand it it's for two reasons. To return judo to a more traditional form and for long term development of fighters so that they learn judo (as opposed to wrestling) technique.

  • you can still use it, but only in a defensive mode like te- guruma

  • this a malformed one cutting up!!!

they are on a knee only slowly the judo I do sports!!!???

you laid the beautiful and successful actions only in. not the slipping climbing!!!!!

  • Naidan Tuvshinbayar is a good example why.

  • no i like the idea of not graping the pants but i think leg grabs should be alowed Kano wanted the sport to evolve Judo was the first mixed martial art and making all these stupid rules is destroying the sport not evolving it I think there should be more ne-waza time alowed and ne-waza techniques aswell

  • the IJF says that they're doing this further differentiate between judo and wrestling, in my openion taking leg picks away from judo is just as bad as taking ippon seoinage from judo. its total bullshit, legs picks all the way!!!!!!!!

  • No way to that rule. I love leg catch throws and take downs personally and have no problem with someone using them against me. NO NO NO!

  • NOOOOOO!!!!

    greco-roman- alike

  • FUCK NO!!!!!!!!
