  • Thanks Elizabeth. Have been checking w/Ranger station. Sounds like route will be doable (we expect some snow, though). Doing low dose Diamox (125 mg at night) to help with the Cheyne-Stokes breathing. Biggest concern at this point is water levels but we're "locked in" at this point (leaving in 6 days). Guess we'll see how it goes and will do what we have to in order to assure a safe trip. Thanks for responding.

  • You can look into Diamox (prescribed) to prepare for altitude sickness. If you are taking the train buy your tickets online since it will likely be sold out... very touristy thing. Hope I was helpful ! :) Good luck, be safe and do call for snow conditions, as I mentioned 7/1/11 I expect is way early (like about 2-3 weeks early) Also early means buggy be ready for that too.

  • Hi Bacpkn - This year has been real bad with snow. check the ranger station from home before coming here to make sure you can do this trip since some areas are very high. I live at 4,500 and in some places I felt it. Walk slow or slower ! drink a ton of water. I assume some water passes will be high (think 7/1 is way soon). We had lots of thunderstorms and showers daily but I don't think that's more of an August problem. We encountered no bears but they are in the area.

  • Great video. My husband and I are planning this loop beginning on July 1st this year. Our biggest concerns are acclimatization and water levels. Altitude should be no issue after our 2nd night. Did you guys have any AMS problems with staying between the 2 passes on your second night or do you live in the higher altitude area? Thoughts on water crossings? Thanks. (Our home elevation is 1100')

  • We went on the third week of July so its a great time for you as well. This year there is above snow average so it may be wise to check on snow level just to be sure. Water crossing will be full run-off - poles, and two of you should be fine. We had no problems with bears. And last... it rained on us every afternoon with strong lightening so do plan high passes early am. Buy train tickets online with plenty of time. Would love to hear how you did ?

  • What time of year did you go because my girlfriend and I are going out in the middle of July. Any other things that are good to know about the area?

  • In what month did you take your trip? Did you hang your food or use a bear canister?

  • The high passes were done in the morning and then dropped down for camp every afternoon (it rained every afternoon with lots of lightening). Lots of trees once you drop from the passes. If you go... have a wonderful time it was an awsome trip - I loved it. except I got tired of all that afternoon rain however.

  • Looks like on night 2 that you camped between the two passes. Were you able to hang a bear bag at this altitude?

    PB

  • @bbuechler123 yes no problems hanging on trees. Also no problems we bear encountered with anyone we talked to but that varies from seasons sometime. n Have fun
