By 1981 fewer viewers were watching "Card Sharks" because of its noon ET time slot. Many of NBC's affiliates aired local midday news for the higher ratings, profits and revenues. When "Jeopardy!" was on at noon it was appointment television, but in early 1974 it was moved to mornings and NBC had a revolving door of other game and miscellaneous shows which didn't catch on the way "Jeopardy" did. NBC finally gave up on noontime programming in 1989.
My God and Heaven! I am surprised Gene Wood didn't sprain his tongue on those ad plugs! It's the one thing I miss as a game show fan of 30 years! Great post.
--The plug for tickets (which said that you could procure them by sending a request and SASE to the NBC Ticket Dept. @ 3000 W. Alameda in Burbank). Nowadays on "TPIR," all the ticket plug consists of (if anything) is a quick plug for getting them on CBS.com, and that doesn't have the same effect.
--V/O promos for "Lobo" and "Hill Street Blues" (don't know who the announcer was).
--Studio design (which I think was one of the best in game shows, and television).
@Retrotv Yes, the episode from Lobo gives it away. They mentioned that night's episode which involves Pirates and that means it was 4/21/81. Also, that day's episode of WOF is on the trading circuit and is also posted on youtube.
Awesome clip. You'll certainly never see this again, not with the emphasis on getting all current advertisng all of the time they think they deserve. Old TV > Current TV.
@DownsA530 Strongly agreed! This "Card Sharks" closing from '81 beats today's "TPIR" closing anyday (now that "TPIR" has the FremantleMedia logo not once, but twice).
This is on a Tuesday. Probably either the 21st or 28th because of the starting our fourth year mention from Jim. Appears to be a kids week because of some of the parting gift plugs.
Speed ups---You're doing it right!

Card Sharks ended a few months later on NBC, and would not return to TV until January of 1986 on CBS.

Even if you didn't win any money as a contestant, you'd still need a truck to haul away all the sh*t you'd get!

Anyone else heard nothing but "sfsdkfsdfjsfn shoe store" at 1:05?

Nine plugs! I wonder if Gene ever complained to the producers for having to read so many, and speed up towards the end? Still, well done Gene!

Glad to help out with Classic TV History, but I sometimes can't figure them all out.
