There's a new cover of this song by new band The Floe. It's well worth looking for - totally different to this but worth checking out if you like your music.
this and The Jam's version are close for me, i think the Jam did a better job with the lyrics, but i like them both equally pretty much in terms of everything else
They took their sound from several different artists...not just The Who.
In fact, Weller dislikes The Who after their 3rd album, "Sell Out"...try to find their interview together (Weller & Townshend) in a 1979 Melody Maker magazine.
But uh...Weller says that they are more directly influenced by Tamla Motown & The Sex Pistols...you can find that clip here on YouTube I'm sure.
Sometimes a cover is better than the original . When it feels good and everyone in the band like to do it, than why not. It's a question of taste all in all . Thank you , rock on !
Yeah well they did. And I think its amazing. Its a great song. Theyre a great band. I am sure this the kind of song i would have liked to hear the who play more of.
This is what I call a proper cover. Also, who says that Rod Stewart is the best white soul singer? Roger Daltrey is far better! This song, plus the Who's versions of "I Don't Mind" and "Please, Please, Please", says it all.
Someone who can finally credit The Who for being one of the absolute best bands of all time, all whilst admitting that Townshend is not so much of a decent lead guitarist!!!
Townshend is a fantastic rhythm guitarist...but anyone who says he is a great lead guitarist should be politely ignored.
At least I'm not the only person on earth who thinks there were other groups better than the Beatles. They made this song sound like a more beach boy version, The Vandellas is a funk soul masterpeice
i saw all the 60's bands..and for sure,,the who played their asses off and you'd walk out totaly soaked in sweat from jumping all around...they were the best live band i saw....till i saw zeplin do their whole first album at a small place here in L A.......but that was 69 and things started to change.
There seems to be so much unseen The Who footage that another film montage could be made, with the footage going through those restoration supercomputers, experts tweakin' the sound and such like..
is this live?

@phantomofthedrivein, yes it is. Recorded at the Marquee Club, March 1967.

I love how its supposed to be a light poppy song, yet the drums are heavy as shit. Keith Moon was a badass
Shiv5710 9 months ago
@Shiv5710 It's a Tamla Motown song by Martha Reeves & Vandellas

john has no bones, keith has 12 arms, pete could write perform and play, and roger could definately sing

Hey Who Freak, word life on the 666 bro, you definitely must know what's up, especially with the extremely rare version of Heat Wave.
metaldemon213 2 years ago
This version of Heatwave isn't rare...it's on their second album...at least in America.

Fuck yeah, motherfucker!
Weller's opening guitar riff is great on their version.
The Jam epitomized "mod" more than the fucking Who ever did.
Let's remember...The Who were NOT mods...they were a band MADE FOR MODS.
And people...don't bite my head off. That's a quote from Townshend.

Its great, but I prefer The Jam's version by a whisker.

the Jam where a decent band but they pretty much took there sound right from the Who
keithmoonforever1 2 years ago
More like from the Small Faces. And their look too. Have a look at early clips of the small Faces, especially where they were wearing suits.

the best version of this song, bar none!
what you must remember is that the who were, at this point, still a mod band so covering this made total sense.
funnily enough, less than 10 years later the sex pistols started touring, covering who numbers eg substitute!
biggayone 2 years ago
a lot of the Sex Pistols' playlist were old Mod (or Mod related) tunes!
"Understanding" & "Whatcha gonna Do About It"
small faces
"Through My Eyes" the Creation
"Substitute" the Who
"Give Me No Lip Child" Dave Berry
"Im Not Your Stepping Stone" the Monkees
there's probly more..

THE WHO IS THE BEST BAND EVER!!
EVERY SINGLE MEMBER WAS THE BEST AT WHAT THEY DID.
bonjovilvr3 3 years ago 31
The Who is the best band ever. It's all opinion of course, but they had some qualifications I look for
-Chops (as you said musicially this band ruled. Pete was probably behind Clapton and Hendrix though as a solo player)
-Original (the Who sounded like NO ONE and NO ONE sounds like them)
-Energy (anyone with more? It helps to have a locomotive on drums)
-LIVE playing (no band peformed as brilliantly live. NO BAND. Without a doubt one of the greatest live acts in recorded history)
