You need PS and a graphics tablet to help with freehand selections and mark making. You don't need to know everything about PS, the core of it is really experiemental with making objects look convincing with a combination of smooth or crisp edges, blending, opacities using layers. You have to make a transformation look believable but it is also easy to spot Photoshopped images if you make it too obvious. In this case the gothic look works since it is supposed to be a drastic surreal change.
