If I may, I think this song is about two people having sex at, or near a playground. I mean, "I've been waiting on the slide/suggest I open wide/No incentive to hide"
And "Inside of me, some sight to see/Some sight to feel our earthy bed"
and lastly: "Drink in your eyes/Drink in your sighs/Grass in my thighs my aching legs. It's STILL a KICK-ASS song, but that's my theory. Feel free to comment. And Miki was bangin' back in the day:) still is.
@AeonPhoenixZero the playground thing is a euphemism for what the song's really about - It's about having sex whilst high on ecstasy - hence "when you're up , I'm coming down" I read it in a magazine interview about 20 years ago :)
My friend got us to party with Miki after her show at the Vogue in Indianapolis 1996. Miki was quite on another level by that time, might I add. I got to play video games with her in a bar. When the PA played "Dancing Quenn" by ABBA, she freaked out and started dancing in the bar by herself and all these jocks were just sitting there mesmerized...
@GonsalvoDeCordova "Beneath the Shadows" was seriously unlike anything ever put to wax. You'll love it or feel kind of gulity loving it. I'm a pretty proud fan it myself.
@rido515 You know the band Death? The lead singer, Chuck, listed Lush as one of his favorite bands. It's pretty undeniable that Lush was (and still is) an amazing band.
@pilsenschop I'll see if I can find it, but he was talking about what types of genres and bands he listened to besides Death Metal, and he apparently was a fan of the alternative scene at that time. He listed Lush, among others, as a favorite of his. :)
@rido515 Well, good on ya! I'm damn near 3 times your age and an old school metalhead- I knew Metallica back in '82 and '83 when they were just another club band from S.F.- and I flat- out f*****g LOVE Lush. Check out their album 'Split'- a lot of fans think it was their best.
I envy every person that had a possibility to hear Them live. There are only few bands so special for me. Am 33 now and still have my first Lush tape on shelf.
Look, I've been a musician all of my life (I play bass, guitar, trumpet and a little drums) and I love Rock Band.
I know the difference between fake and real instruments and it's definitely not a replacement. But for entertainment that game is great. Musicians can enjoy that game too. If I want to play real bass I will. If I want to kick back and play a music video game that is fine too.
you tube has great finding tracks from college. but i still dig in the bins at the (record) store. most of which sell dvd s, video games, and actual records. please put down the plastic guitar. and pick up the real thing. you might be suprised how cool it is to play a real song. great song!!!!
I think the reason most kids my age would rather play rock band than an actual instrument is fairly simple and quite sad at the same time. It's because they simply can't be arsed to put any time or effort into an instrument and would rather pick up a shitty piece of plastic and play it right away. :(

Thanks for posting this vid. I remember this version much more than the other video. I taped it off some Channel 4 music show and must have watched it hundres of times in the early nineties. Good memories. Great song!
This is the video that I first saw by this band a long long time ago. I miss the days when video looked like this. Really a throw back to the 60s videos. Still a great song 20 years later. Same that most people only know this group from Rock Band. Some of the best band in the 90s came from the UK.
It shouldn't matter how anyone was introduced to the music. Whether it be from a game, or from word of mouth, or just the radio the only thing that should matter is that they've discovered something great that they can pass on.
How is it a shame? I heard of Lush through Rock Band, and after I researched them, I was exposed to a whole new genre of music: Shoegaze, which is actually now my favorite form of music.
I'm really glad I found out about Lush. A vast majority of my favorite music is from the 80's and 90's, and I was born in '91.
It's a shame because people that were born in the last 20 years will never be able to just discover most great bands like them naturally on the radio or on MTV (when they actually played videos) and can only really discover something like this on the Internet or Rock Band. In the early 90s you didn't have those things which I think made that time period and finding new music special. But, that is just the way things are going, which is sad, but what can you do? I'm logged on, too, these days.
The bigger shame is that music like this is almost impossible to come back these days. A vast majority of the music created today is complete trash, and I think you can agree with me on that. MTV, VH1, and any other station only caters to crappy mainstream bands, rather than playing foreign bands and great alternative acts like they used to.
I know it had to be great to actually discover this music back then, but I didn't have that ability. I didn't even know this type of music existed then.
Amen to that. I still love the music of my high school years and still listen to that stuff. It went down hill after around 1998. There has been some great music in the last 5 years finally. It's not as easy because the radio and TV is not devoted to good music anymore. As much as I sometimes hate the Internet, I've found some really great new and old bands. But, I do hate Rock Band. I play real guitar and drum, so that may be why and I think more people did 20 years ago. Check out The Current.
Will do. Hey, Rock Band actually helped me decide to actually get a real guitar. I'm pretty devoted about it. I think eventually I'll get a bass as well. I think Rock Band is only good as a party game, but anyone who thinks they will learn how to play real instruments by playing it are delusional. I understand your viewpoint though.
I've actually met people that think Rock Band is just like real guitar which cracks me up. I just don't understand the appeal except to get drunk and play it. Other than that, I would rather pick up my Gibson SG, Martin, or Fender jazz bass. The Current is a great indie music station here in the St. Paul/Minneapolis area. Believe me, I've lived all around the US and they are one of the best station for music in the same vein as Lush and bands like them. And I'm not just saying that.
naroon201 keep digging there was alot great music around at that time. check out kim deal with ultra vivid scene. stone roses, world party 'put a message' . labels 4ad, wax trax, etc.
I've loved this song for years now and I was psyched when it appeared on Rock Band II because it'd mean one of my favorite songs would be heard by millions of people, and maybe because then, more people would appreciate Lush and other great dream pop bands. Why do people have to be elitist about this? It doesn't really matter how you discovered Lush. Chances are you were told to hear it by some hipster and you listened because you thought it'd make you cool. Is that so much better?
I love the sound in this band! I was browsing through the songs in Rock Band 2 and listened to it. It's fun to play on drums, and I couldn't stop playing it!
Now I'm hooked on this band!! Too bad they're not around anymore. :(
People need to lighten up. Im sorta thrilled they are on rock band. I happen to hear this one night on 120 minutes round 1990. Does that make it better? Lush defined high school for me and Im happy there is a resurgence.
First heard this song on Rock Band. I thought to myself "OMG what is this song??" I got hooked to it ever since. I can play this song all day and never get tired of hearing it.
Um, what the heck is Rock Band? I'm not into this video game stuff. I heard this band on the radio back in the day (only on an alternative station--they were never huge in the U.S., don't know why).
why the fuck are people talking about rock band, do you really like this song because its apprently on rock band or do you like this because it sounds good?
I don't like it because it appears on rock band. I like it because it's nice sounding and it's unlike any music I've heard of before. Growing up as a kid I didn't hear music like this. My parents mostly played classic rock and no modern stuff. Plus it's not like you heard music like this on the radio back in 1990 (just around when I was born). Basically I'm just showing how I was introduced to this band, through rock band.
I'm older than you,so I can remember hearing music like this on public radio stations from the 1980's on up. In fact, this Canadian station here in Detorit played Lush all the dang time (they were an alternative station long before "alternative" music became the cool thing to hear). I first heard this song in 1992 .,and I've always loved it because it sounds like a psychedelic 1960's tune--it's beautiful, even though I've never understood the lyrics worth a damn.
Spoken like a true video gamer. Lush, however, was comprised of talented musicians who could play real instruments and write actual songs. Go back to your video game world,.
I think this is easily the best video for De-Luxe. Larking around in an English country field on a frosty winters day. Its Lush in their time and their place. The second promo made for this is maybe more polished, but kaleidoscopic effects and whorls and flames are a bit MTV generic. If you want a little taste of late 80s/early 90s scene-that-celebrates-itself era Lush, watch this video and there they are.
This version is the video I first saw from them. It's the UK which I'm surprised they showed here in the US. But, I saw it on an local independant music station on cable in Minneapolis.
At the risk of sounding like a pseudy old bastard, this just takes me back to a trip to Nice, lying on the beach, sun beating down, listening to this and the rest of Gala on my sub-Walkman. Bliss...

Bliss...
