Copland's piece is able to exemplify simple and yet complex evocations. There is a definitive sense of early western music and a profound sense of panorama.
@HOMEnHIGH He DID meet Jesse James, he was a pal with him and he was asked if he wanted to join his gang but he said no. Trainrobbing was nothing for Billy.
Love this piece AND love the pictures you've provided. Do you have references for where some of these pics are actually from? e.g. what towns these images are of?
Copland, master genius of the baton and scribe of music! Can you hear that, you actually feel like your in a lonely southwestern desert waiting for Billy to return from a gunfight!
The best part is "Prairie Night", just gives me goosebumps. It's just awesome. Btw the pic with Bowdre, Holliday, James and The Kid looks weird, coz none of them looks like they do on the other (newer?) pics you can find all over the web. But my guess is that this is one of the earliest, oldest pics taken, and all of them were like still almost teens. I mean esp. Doc looks so young in this one.
I drove an 18 wheeler for 20+ years. I have driven across some of the barren roads out west and the north west. I would pop in this CD and let my mind escape the worries of the day and look out across a wild west backdrop of dancing colors and imagined cowboys and Indians living and riding their pony's. I could almost hear their voices as they rode away and i kept on rolling along. Copland must have been a Cowboy at heart.
@calpatty1808 I was in the Sandia mountains all alone driving listening to Aaron Copeland's- "our town" and felt the same way surrounded by beauty like his music.
I was very pleased to hear this is the cinci pops! I went to see them a good number of times and I can't express my sorrow of the death of such a great conductor, Erich Kunzel.
The supposed "regulators" photo at 1:07 is not of Billy the Kid or the other supposed famous western figures. That is a misidentified image from a known crook and image scammer from Missouri. I have some videos that explain it. Do not be fooled.
@LongRiderRebel His reputation proceeds him! This video is definitely presenting his fake that was debunked right here on Youtube. I'm sure the creator of this vid didnt realise he got had though. Thanks for letting us know, Rebel!
Damn, they brought out the CANNONS for this performance! jk...but the percussion is pretty darn, well, percussive. I like it--a far cry from its two-piano version origins. Thanks for posting this, my co-favorite Copland piece along with the Piano Variations.
they say the pat never shot billy and let billy go to old mexico and say that pat shot him. a man caimed to be billy the kid and the man had died in 1950 it remains a mystery if he actually was billy the kid. if you watch young guns 2 it will tell yall about it
Aaron Copland...pure musical genius. Thanks for posting this American classic. I'he seen this performed in NYC with Agnes DeMille's fabulous choreography which only adds to the emotional impact of the music. Your video also adds a wonderful demension to the score. American genius...Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Geroge Gershwin, Scott Joplin...originals. Thanks again for the music and the memories.
I will chime in with a really strange thought. I love Copland, and I am a stickler for English grammar and spelling, the American version! Majority of the responses for this vid have "American Received English"! I love it. I can speak on this for hours!
American English is SOO much better than the British, to be honest.
We move so fast into the furture. Convinced to look only forward and buy buy buy the ever new thing. Never to turn around to see and hear the vast treasure of our rich past.
So hit the brakes and pull over to the side of your life and take a moment to cherish that from which you have come. Close your eyes and listen to magic.
Haydn and Mozart are probably the most renowned pure classical composers (Beethoven started to incorporate some romantic traits towards the end of his life.). Typically the classical period is considered from 1750 to 1820.
how is that relevant to Copland, copland was a 20th century composer. He wasn't a classical composer or romantic or post-romantic. He was a 20th century composer. An era of new ways of creating music.
On a side note, this song in the video is probably one of my favorite pieces of music that was made before my time.
Out of curiosity, are you American? I think it's fair to say that most American listeners wouldn't hesitate to drop the "American" in front of composer and just call him one of the greatest composers of all time.
For me, as an American, I can't help but feel an immense pride in my country (really just this side of the world in general, not just the United States) when I listen to Copland's music. He was our direct answer to the European dominated Classical style.
yes, i am american. but what im trying to say is that out of the american composers he is one of the best. like one would say that hector berloiz is one o the greatest french composers of all time. and i totally agree that he broke the stereotype that classical music is all european. it has a strong western feel to it.
Tigersimmmer, then when according to your classifications was the era of classical music? It does not make sense to me to say that neither Bach, nor Chopin, not Copland wrote and performed classical music. Aren't your categories sub-categories of classical music?
Pepelopolus...agreed! I love this music, it captures our history. My feet never took Mexico...I want to appreciate the history and hope of the Southern border
@Halfmoon67 Just to let you know, this is not classical music. The classical era was from 1750- 1820. This was composed in 1938, making it 20th Century.

@SordidGuy I didn't "demean" anyone. The eras of music ARE classified into categories: Bach wrote "Baroque" music, for example, while Chopin was a "Romantic" composer, and Aaron Copland was "20th Century".
These eras of music relate to more than just the sounds of the pieces. They reflect broad changes in society and culture that influenced the way music was written, performed, and heard.
