The problem with this debate is that noise problems are subjective. The people who live near turbines are rural people used to rural silence. For the rest of us, who live near freeways and the like, we just frown and wonder what the fuss is about. Personally, I say suck it up. We have to do something about energy, and NIMBY just won't cut it anymore.
Why is everyone so critical of wind turbines? I bet half you people haven't never even heard the god awful screech a coal mine makes when it switches it's batches of coal. Even oil power plants make noise. People are saying they'd rather live next to a landfill? That is unbelievable.
@rickcain2320 Or someone comes along a builds a massive ugly white thing next to your house that makes a shit-load of noise, especially at night. My sister lives near a wind farm in Scotland and they do make a lot of noise.
In England developers sometimes have to scale back plans for wind farms to avoid breaking planning guidance on noise (ETSU-R97). That is despite the guidance allowing them to generate more noise than the WHO say you need to get back to sleep. They aren't all noisy - "only" around 1 in 6 wind farms have complaints - but perhaps people don't complain because of the effect it would have on the value of their house?
This is such propaganda. That last one was turning so slow that it wasn't even generating electricity. When they are at full speed and generating, those things are LOUD and obnoxious over miles. Look at other posts by real people that show their true effect.
@RandomConcepts People who complain about aesthetic values are blind to reality. When are you going to wise up and realize that doing what is right is more important than caring about looks? Fossil fuels won't last forever. We need to use forms of energy that will always be available. Otherwise you will have none. It's funny you speak of aesthetics...if we continue to burn coal and pollute our planet then you will really have something to bitch about.
24 hours /day & they can be louder at some distance than directly under the turbine. I live 1662 ' from the Falmouth, MA turbine#1 a 1.65MW 400' tall Vestas noise maker. Driven crazy since it went into use in early 2010 I have become obsessed with fact finding and making my case to prevent having to move from my home of 30 years. It isn't looking good despite anxiety, stress, depression, migraines, irritability, emotional turmoil, sleep deprivation, palpitations, & inability to concentrate. BAF
It is very true that older or unmodified wind turbines emit a loud sound when rotating. This is documented all the time, but it's easily fixed and they already have upgrades and modifications to any of the turbine types, which in turn makes them virtually un-noticable, such as these in the video. It's easily fixed people.
@RandomConcepts Your the idiot, if a farmer has one of these close enough to be heard, then it's on his land & they get paid by the power company for the land the turbine sets on, the access road to each turbine, & the power cable runs buried underground. in our area Farmers are trying to get an airport closed just so they can get turbines on their property. this is in an area that already has hundreds of wind turbines.
I dont see whats the big deal about the noise, the only disadvantage about these are the land it takes up, but i truly think they make a pleasant sound and look neat, if you live close to a turbine and cant stand the noise, then move away.
The oil and coal plants are extremely noisy and causes extreme pollution, killing millions of people a year, wind turbines are the better way of creating energy
ALSO- the turbines are a little bit noisier then the wind itself!
They are noisy. At night when the atmosphere is dense is the time you should do your tests. Wind turbines are not a good choice for a residential setting, I live 750 from one.
These are rather quiet. Truly the babbling brook talks louder than these gentle giants. A neat sound is heard when I am right upon them. It just makes me smile.
I've stood underneath some of these large turbines and concur that your video is accurate.

Imagine a big mouth blowing air on a big bottle.
The bottle is tilted in a certain way.
you do not hear any sound.
therefore you consider it quiet.
and if its quiet, it cannot have any affect on anyone?
but perhaps you know sonic weapons are for real
do you think you can hear them?
would you record them using a regular microphone?
How much easier would windturbines be to dampen out If they were in the same audiable spectrum as a bird and water?

I think the cars in the back ground are more irritating, or that bird chirping, kill it so I can hear the windmill

@endgame99 I live near a 300 turbine wind farm, you can't hear them over the sound of the breeze blowing past your ears.
