lol, my dad used to play with this when he was a kid, spilled a few grams worth everywhere and he said it just vaporized when he remembered it a few weeks later. since he didnt have dry ice to harden it and clean it. I am sure this is great to breath (not)
Now I just need to figure out why I brought this up!
If you spill it, you bead it up and use fingernails, index cards, or tape to pick it up and place it in its container. You could also react it with Sulfur and just sweep it up, but it's hard to recover.
Also, if your Mercury gets dirty, put it in a shallow glass/paper pan and run Scotch tape over the surface. Works great.
Lastly, thank you for the tip on where to get it. I've been looking for more.
Yea, the weak intermolecular forces are due to the fact that the 6s electrons are accelerated towards the nucleus faster than usual because of it's specific electron configuration and it's large effective nuclear charge. The acceleration causes an increase in mass and a lower energy state orbital, this is what makes Hg's intermolecular forces so tiny compared to other metals. It still has really high IMF though due to omnidirectional metallic bonding. :D
I asked my professor why mercury isn't a solid and he could not answer! I looked it up and it is actually due to the relativistic contraction of its two valence electrons in the 6s (off the top of my head may be 7) orbital! Relativity has a direct effect on the physical properties of a substance! That was one of the most interesting facts I have ever learned.
Nice, I never get tired of watching Mercury videos lol. Also, never such a thing as being overly cautious when pouring it; I'm paranoid about spilling it as well! I treat it like something as precious as gold, I don't want to lose any, let alone have it get somewhere I can't retrieve it as it emanates itself in fume form in the air I like to put into my lungs. But still amazingly neat stuff!
if you pour a layer of water over it, it would make it a bit safer and prevent mercury vapour

God, I would like to thank you personally for making mercury. It is freaking awesome. Nice work.

I personally would have worn gloves with Mercury

I can't be trusted with those sorts of things. I usually end up swallowing things , so liquid mercury probably wouldn't be the best gift for me.
