Interesting. I enjoy seeing this kind of stuff and maybe one day, I'll be motivated enough to do one myself. I do want to add one tid bit for you. I hadn't seen the "swirl filters" in other systems I've seen; however, I am an engineer in the air pollution control field and this "device" is essentially a crude "mechanical separator" that we call a cyclone. Move the outlet pipes to the center and you will get better results for the separation as the idea is to move junk to the outside. Cheers!
the problem you are having with trying to have the pickup from the fish tank is that you are using an elbow, instead of an elbow use a T fitting. the elbow puts down pressure, the T will allow for no pressure at the joint.

@BMayhew60 Yeah, that was kind of the original idea. Sadly, the flow rates aren't sufficient for any swirl action to occur.
