I think Minsky's started out on 14th Street, since it predates the era of big Broadway theaters. And then, I think it moved uptown. Does anyone know precisely?
Minsky's first theatre was on the Lower East side on 2nd avenue. They branched out to own theatres in Brooklyn, Harlem, and several theatres in midtown Manhattan. Their 42nd street theatre became the Minsky's flagship theatre during the 1930's. Check out Minsky's Burlesque: a fast and funny look at America's bawdiest Era" by Morton Minsky (the youngest Minsky brother) and Milt Machlin.
Thanks. My knowledge is is based on "Gypsy," where the famous Minsky's is announced as being on 14th St., and the film, "The Day They Raided Minsky's" (or something like that - a funny film). I'll look it up.
I believe they did have one on 14th street, but even that was "uptown" to the lower east side jewish immigrants like the Minsky brothers at the time that the first Minsky's Burlesque opened in the first decade of the 20th century.
How cool is that!
