If you went to Beha Jr High School 60 in lower manhattan NY in 1967, then you were in the auditorium listening to me & my band "The Elements of Sound" performing this gem which was our signature song we loved playing. That's right people....it was 45 years ago today.Great song....great memories !
67 THERE WAS ALREADY ALOT OF HEAVY SHIT COMING OUT OF THE HAIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO AT THE TIME. AND ALSO PEPPER CAME OUT AND WE ALL KNOW WHAT HAPPENED THEN!!!
I might say, although I have heard no comment along these lines, it is possible they set a (very fine) example for the Yardbirds... and then the "New Yardbirds"... what would become Led Zeppelin.
@renojim432 Yes....well the point I was making was that Vanilla Fudge may have had an influence on Jimmy Page, and the nascent Led Zeppelin, not so much the Yardbirds...
Was in Germany, US Army, when this album came out, smoking some seriously good opianated hash! This album was and is a great piece of music history, thanks for posting these cuts MMManiac..Im a Maine-iac myself! Peace!
1967?! This must have been quite the [shocking] album in the day, was it not (?) Somewhat before the main psychodelic [as it has been referred to, and perhaps improperly] impulse in rock, iyw, in the very late 1960's.
I have always thought that rock's finest year was, btw, 1969... And you know: with the decline of classical music, Rock, being so sophisticated and serious as it was then, *did function* as a replacement, and answer, of the young to some of the questions classical did address.
@JohnGLewis1964 There was nothing else like it on the AM radio back then, local bands imitated them almost overnight, this album was a sensation. I remember seeing a band called The John Does play "Take Me For a Little While" live in my local high school, the bass player had a Fender V and a Kustom amp with three 15's in it, he could do the bass solo almost perfect, those were the days.
later a smashhit for another band ... but dont forget: somebody first must have the inspiration for a song. to transform the idea of somebody else into a maybe more successfull version is easier ....
Only recently did I become aware of the true gems of the music from the 60s and 70s. This is definitely one of them. I have to say I like several versions of this song, but only this particular one contributes to my idea that I really missed something by being born a few decades late.
@Co19801003 Yes, I know. I was a teenager in the 60's. Times were innocent and music was great. Keep discovering via You Tube. I'm reliving my younger (hippie) days by this and I love it. Wonderful times. Keep the faith (as we old hippies used to say).
I was just home from Viet Nam when these guys hit the sound waves. As a turned-on flower child in San Francisco, imagine the impact their music had on me... Thanks for the memory!
Quote from Richard Blackmore of the original lead guitarist for Deep Purple." They played eight-minute songs, with dynamics. People said, "What the hell's going on here? How come it's not three minutes?" Timmy Bogert, their bassist, was amazing. The whole group was ahead of its time. So, initially we wanted to be a Vanilla Fudge clone." he also said, while they were in London, in '67, VF were their heroes: btw VF itself says due to terrible producers, the album "The Beat Goes On" finished them
@bobtravinsky i don't. but what i do remember is riding with my parents at age nine hearing this on the radio for the first time and just thinking these guys transformed a motown song into like some kind of new information. monumental
Thanks for putting this up. My old worn-out open reel version finally broke, and I was about to tear down the garage in search of my vinyl copy. I had the good fortune of performing this and Ticket to Ride with a soulful singer and a skillful organist, he with a Hammond B3 spinning a Leslie cabinet. Girls of all ages loved it.

One of the oldest rock LPs in my very humble collection, and one of the most psychedelic for sure.
