Ok everyone.... The LD competitors train just to hit it long, the pros train for every part of their game. LD competitors have a wide area to hot the ball within. Bubba has much less width, so its amazing how he hits it so long with soo much control. Also, driving statistics may be important, showing how straight they are hitting it. Fairways more often than not lead to greens in Regulation. That is all :)
@GrecoPrawDG That was a draw swing by the follow through... he works the ball both ways... the most of any tour pro... never seen him try to hit a smooth straight ball, always working it from the center on the green towards the pin position!
@azgreenskeeper Ah ok, one of the golf channel guys said that with the driver, Bubba only hit fades. But I knew that he fully utilizes both the draw and fade on other clubs. I don't know how it's even possible to hit a 15 yard draw with a sand wedge haha
@GrecoPrawDG only possible if you have it on a different flight path then normal. You have to hood the club and wrench your wrists over at impact. But, the ball isn't gettin up high for anything. LOL
If you ever get a chance to watch him on the range, do it! It's unbelieveable! Seriously, I played in his junior tournament last year, and he did a clinic.... He worked a wedge with literally a 45 yard draw...
That shoot is SOOOO narrow in person. There's two things about Augusta that you don't appreciate so much on TV. One is the severity of the slopes on and around the greens, and the other is just how much these guys have to bend their tee shots both ways.

i believe long drive players are just people who do not have a great all around golf game and have to resort to trying to hit the ball as far as they can
real golf players play actual golf and do not try hitting the ball as far as they can
i just think it is pretty stupid and is for players who cannot play the real game of golf
@jdwilson909 That is a juvenile comment. It is funny to see so many people bag out those that crush the ball. Is it an inferiority complex that causes this? Is it a threatened ego?? I don't know. You see it too with Long drive competitors that are scratch or better golfers also. Weird.
@jdwilson909 So did Bubba really not win the Travelers yesterday? Did you see him almost hole his sand wedge for eagle during the playoff. Yeah, I think he can play just fine. Hitting long is an advantage. It doesn't mean you suck at golf.
@quintili1 Well I wrote that comment 6 months ago and yeah I saw him win the travelers. I was rooting for him. I like Bubba Watson. All I am saying is that long, long hitters do not win usually a whole lot. Its just the way it is. Look how long it took him to grab his first pga tour victory, at a stop where many of the big names were not there. Look at the facts. The longest hitters do no win a lot and do not have an all-around good golf game, to compete at the highest level.
@jdwilson909 Last time I checked, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson hit the ball pretty damn far. Do they not have an all around good golf game? Hitting long is just a bonus to go with your other golf skills. It can be a huge advantage.
@quintili1 Yeah, they do. But I am talking about the top 5 long hitters. Which would be Robert Garrigus, Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, Graham DeLaet, and Angel Cabrera. Besides Angel Cabrera, no one in the top 5 in distance has a major. Johnson has won a couple times and Watson finally got his first win. I am just saying the longest hitters do not do too well compared to guys who drive the ball a little longer than average. The stats are there to see. Mickelson is #9 in total distance.
@jdwilson909 hitting long has absolutely nothing to do with anything pertaining to a win. as a matter of fact, none of the stats they use on the pga tour have any real statistical significance as to how good a player is with the exception of sand saves, greens in regulation, putts per hole, and scoring average. this is something that HAS been qualified by various academics. nothing off the tee is significant, for that matter. what does matter is you are able to keep composure under pressure.
@jdwilson909 Uhmmm in his day Ben Hogan was a long hitter...Tiger woods in 1998 could hit the ball about 350 if he let one go. .....Lets see Anthony Kim is long for his size........A lot of long hitters and the LD guys like Sadlowski are scratches so that may be true to a extent but it is also false
@jdwilson909 Jack Nicklaus was by far the longest hitter or his time and he won 18 majors. Sam Snead was the longest hitter of his time and he one 80 tournaments. Tiger Woods was the longest hitter along with Daly in the first part of his career and Tiger won a ton of tournaments and majors. Just because some guys who aren't that good show up on the distance stat list doesn't mean "long hitters do not win usually a whole lot."
@jdwilson909 sir you are not a real golfer if that is what you think, you have no respect for people who like to have use their advantage of hitting it naturally long, bubba is one of those people, have you seen bubba putt lately, the man is a golfer and a damn good one as well
and also, are you calling Dustin Johnson not a golfer?
As a former teaching pro, it is evident that Bubba is swinging at max 70% in this video. There is no doubt he hits a long ball, but he would not compete in the Long Drive circuit. I've hit balls next to Jason Zuback on the range, and there is just no comparison between those guys when it comes to distance.
If you dont think Bubba watson could compete with those guys your not a very smart pro. Bubba hits drives in the mid to upper 300s in competition with a normal size driver. Those guys use extra long shaft and do nothing but try to hit the fuckshit out of the ball. Your right that in this video this drive wouldnt be all that impressive in a LD competition, but wrong when saying he wouldnt compete if he was in the competition.
@tim191219 From a purely statistical view, Bubba can't hit it as far as somebody like Jamie Sadlowski. His swing speed and ball speed just aren't as high. However I'm sure if Bubba trained for L.D. competitions like Sadlowski, he'd very likely win. But it doesn't even matter. We all know the L.D. competitors would give up those competitions in a second to have the game to play on tour. What's more impressive than Bubba's distance is his ability to shape the ball.
if bubba watson wanted to let one rip, i guarantee he has some extra zip to knock it out there further if he wanted. just a few weeks ago bubba hit a 381 yard drive on 18 at cog hill. just saying..
you people are so retarded... bubba hits in NOWHERE compared to LDA guys. im from Milton, FL and ive seen him hit it in person.. not impressive... you can go to a local RE/MAX WLDC qualifier and watch guys blow it 30-50 yards farther than he ever dreamed of.
NOTE: for a REAL long drive swing look up Jamie Sadlowski.
i think.... the beauty of what bubba watson does is that he hits it far and has great control over the rest of his game. its the reason tiger plays practice rounds with bubba... because he can work the ball and hits incredible shots... its like... yeah the long drive guys are long... but most of em cant break 75... so whats the point?
is that his normal caddie or a newb
