  • ok thanks

  • Okay well someone PLEASE help me out. I am so interested in this program and i know that you need a BA as a requirement but what about a BFA? Im going to a college to get my fine arts not arts. Is there really a difference? Thanks!

  • @Spazzosity nope - your degree can be in any field

  • quick question, can i be a ALT and like be an aisstant soccer coach or something? Thanks.

  • @Spazzosity if you get lucky and only have one or two base schools, then you could certainly be involved with the after school clubs, and most Jr high and High schools have a soccer team, so I'm sure they'd welcome your participation

  • Concise and to the point. I love your balanced point of view and systematic organized explanation of what JET is all about. Definitely will keep watching your other Vlogs! Thank you for your contribution and much needed input!!!

  • @DKTranberg cool - thanks for the comment and I hope you enjoy the vlogs.

  • Hello, I just found your videos and plan to watch them all today. Currently I'm planning to apply for JET in 2012, which really isn't that far away since time flies by very fast. I'm sorry if you have answered this question in your latter vlogs, but a question randomly popped in my head. I was wondering if, if a person is accepted in the program, is it possible for him/her to live with other people and have room mates instead of just living alone?

  • @PeaceBurden nope - you are given your own apartment - the rent can be very cheap or slightly expensive - it varies quite a lot. Some JETs will live in Apartment complexes with other JETs - other JETs will live far away from any other JETs.

  • Just found your videos and plan to watch them all. I'm still in high school and would like to ask, if I have a degree (hypothetically speaking) in a music field, is that still considered a BA for this type of job?

  • @PATORlKKU yep - that will work - a degree in any field gets you a work visa in Japan - and JET does the rest

  • I always wanted to travel to Japan, n teaching there'd be an amanzing thing! I've been studying english for ten years...well, i am brazilian male.

eeto...shi getsu mae kara nihongo wo benkyou shiteimasu to, chuukyusha ni natta ne. mainichi hitori de benkyou wo shiteimasu ne...nihon he ikitai yo ^^

  • @renanpupo Good luck with your Japanese studies and your Journey to Japan!

  • This is a fantastic idea thank you

  • how important is teaching experience?

  • @philboy521 it's pretty important for the app - sets you apart a bit if you have any - but for the job it's helpful but not crucial, since JET is very much a learn-as-you-go type job when you first arrive and are adjusting to the culture, the education system, etc.

  • @myargonauts appreciate the feedback

  • will i be alright if i dont have a uni degree but can still get the visa?

  • you can get a tourist visa that allows you to stay in Japan for 90 days. It will be tough to find a job here and get a company to sponsor a work visa without a uni degree

  • sorry i didn't explain my situation properly, i sent a message just now

  • what type of degree do you need to have to be a candidate for the Jet program?

  • Your BA/BS can be in any major.

  • so i can have a bachelors and in anything?

  • yep - the subject you study isn't that important - the need for a BA degree is a Japan requirement for a work visa.

  • @myargonauts

oh that's real good...i think i will join for about 2 years just for the experience

  • I have found all of your videos VERY informative! My goal is to participate in the JET Programme in 2015(year of anticipated college graduation). I am already considering what I can do right now(I'm in my junior year of high school btw) to prepare myself for the whole process of becoming a JET. Your channel is one of the major factors that have inspired me to want to go through with this.

  • Excellent! Best of luck with school and I hope you make it to Japan.

  • I'm not a Jet but, I am interested in the program. I do have one questions:

    1. What is their policy on leaving Japan for holiday or family deaths?

  • they're very understanding if there was a death in the family.

For vacations, you get a number of paid days per year (in my case it was 20) and you just ask for the time off, or schedule your vacation to coincide with school holidays, which is easiest.

  • Umm, I have a pretty long question(actually it's a few) and I would like to know if you had an e-mail I could sent to you or your Facebook thingie? I'm really interested in JET and I just want to make sure I learn as much as I can about the program before I commit. Thanks for your help and your vlogs RULE!!

  • thanks - I have extensive playlists on JET and the process of applying, so click on my main page and then look thru my playlists.

If you still have a question, send me a PM here on YT

  • I've also been thinking of studying for the TESOL or CELTA course. Something with which I can alsouse here and its something I can do on the side for additional income along side my main job in the future. Appologies for the long response

  • So it's just about putting a spin on my absence from IT for the period that I am teaching. I was thinking the best way is to focus on the skills developed and I was hoping to speak to someone whose either been there and done that or someone who works on the JET program already. It would have been easier if I had just graduated and applied on the JET program but unfortunately that is not the case.

  • The only problem is explaining to potential employers of taking up teaching abroad. My personal reasons are really to get a boost in self confidence and other skills that I might develop. But I can't use self confidence as a reason in interviews. So I was looking at skills I might develop whilst teaching. I have been told a number of times about this self confidence issue and I am convinced that teaching for a while will help.

  • Thanks. My background is in IT, so after 1 1 ½ yrs - I am going to return to study a MSc in Computer science at uni in the UK. I graduated back in 2005 and have worked on a number of temporary contracts. Work is tough to found these days with the recession and I have realized that I need to update my skills, but before I go to uni I was thinking on teaching.

  • Hi there,

    Great Vlog.

I am considering on applying for the JET.

    I have 2 questions:

    1) Do you keep in touch with former JET's and where have they ended up?

    2) What skills do you develop whilst teaching English in Japan - that can be used as a transferrable skills in other industries?

  • 1 - yeah, it's easy to keep in touch nowadays with emails and facebook, etc. Shimane JETs even have a facebook group (I'm sure most kens do as well) where we can keep in touch.

2 - Well, I've heard that some employers do seek out people with living abroad experience, and of course if you become fluent in Japanese that's a marketable skill. The teaching stuff really only applies to getting work teaching or working with kids, or some other creative way to spin it.

  • I really enjoy all of your videos! Very useful and entertaining!

Keep up the good work! :)

  • thanks - glad the vids are helpful

  • This is GREAT! Thank you so much for making these videos!!

  • these are not only interesting but very informative! thanks!

  • Hi I'm sure you already answered this, but I'm to lazy to go search (sorry) I plan to watch all your JET vlog's so if you answer this question later on in a video then you don' have to reply to my comment.

What is the general minimum requirement needed to be accepted into the JET program ?

  • hit the link on my main channel page for the JET homepage and you'll get all the info.

Basics - BA/BS degree, native English speaker, good communication skills, interest in Japan/teaching

  • Thankies x2

  • Hi Jason!

Thanks for ur Vlogs, they're really helpful to me. I have a question. I've looked on the web and it seems that many JET participants are all blue-eyes, blonde hair etc. So have you seen any JET participants that are perhaps-mixed, asian-looking? I ask this becoz' I'm asian (but native English speaker) so I hope I'm not at a disAdvantage?

  • When I flew to Japan with the group of new JETs from the Los Angeles consulate, about 100 out of the 220 of us were Asian American.

Here in my town, there is a Japanese American JET from Hawaii named Brent, and he's having a good time and has decided to stay a 2nd year.

You'll most likely bond with whomever you live next to as you'll all simply be gaijin.

  • Hi! I plan on applying to the JET in 2 years and have a question about Universities.

I'm from Montreal and here we've got 2 Universities, McGill and Concordia. McGill is recognized worldwide as a prestigious University however Concordia is only known locally. Will I be at a disadvantage if I am applying from Concordia versus those students coming from McGill? Also, do you need to have top marks to be accepted?

    Thanks!

  • the reputation of the Uni matters little to the Japanese staff that will oversee your application, etc.

The requirement for a BA/BS is so you can get a Japanese work visa.

I think your grades matter a little, but again not much as long as you graduate.

I didn't have the best grades and I made it.

  • Grades are what I'm worried about as well, but your comment was reassuring :)

  • Comment removed

  • yes you can.

When you apply in November of 2009, you have to include some papers showing that you're in school and will finish by June of 2010.

I graduated in May of 2004 and left for Japan in July of 2004.

  • Comment removed

  • I've been wondering this myself. I know I will graduate in the month of May, but I also know the deadline for applications is in April. So, I'm assuming as long as you are going to graduate (with your bs) before your depature date you can still apply?

  • yep - there is a special section in the app for people still in college when they apply. As long as you graduate and show them that diploma - then it's fine.

  • Hiya,

    Just wondering, this jet programme,

what qualifications would i need to do it?

Im A 15yr old UK boy very intrested in this

I Really Wanna know how to go about it...

  • I think your underage and under qualified, you need to have a BA (bachelor degree) to be applicable for jet.

  • Lol, I Knew That, I Just Wondered :)

  • check out the link on my main channel page to the JET homepage for all the requirements.

  • you could get a job here teaching French (altho there is less call for it than English), but it wouldn't be thru the JET Programme. You'd have to go thru a private company/school. There might be one or two French CIRs in the JET Programme, so you could check out the website for info on CIRs (you have to speak pretty good Japanese to become one) or leave a question in the JET Forums.

  • I am kinda rediscovering this jet program... I joined the military to get to japan, but realized, not the way to go. I was looking into the program... Do I need a bachelors degree to join the program? Or can I go with just english as my first language? If this was already asked, sorry. Just wanted to know! Any info will be grateful! Thanks!

  • Yep - you need a college degree - a BA or BS.

    -J

  • Thanks for the reply! Darn! I was reading Jet's requirements, wanting to learn japanese, willing to live there... I met all those. No degree though? Guess I will have to work on that one! Thanks again!

  • Hey Jason i was on your blog today and read that you should have a BA or a BS, i actually won't be getting a BA or BS because I'm going into business. BBA (Bachelors in Business Administration) My question is will this affect my chance? or would have i have to obtain a Tesol or one of those other certificates to teach ESL.

if i'm going to have to do that i'll change my major to ENGLISH, i'm sure that shouldn't be a problem then.

  • I would think that a BBA would be fine. As long as it's a "regular" university and it's a 4-year type program, not a Jr college or a two-year degree.

  • yea i believe in Canada only colleges are 2-3 years university are all 4 years, i'll stick with a BBA and maybe become a gaijin salary man lol.

  • Hello, hopefully you'll respond to this :P. What if you become a JET and then you want to stay in Japan, but not be apart of the JET programme, would that work?

  • sure - JET is a renewable one-year contract, so after your year is finished, you can stay in Japan, assuming you can find another job so you'll have a new company to sponsor your visa.

  • I see :), what about if I had a wife, say, she didn't get into the JET program, would she be able to come over and not get a job if she was lazy?

  • wow, you can stay for 5 years?! I thought three years was the most you could stay. did the rules change?

  • yes - the rule change happened in 2006 and 5 years is now the maximum

  • Wow. Thanks a lot. I'm 20 now and majoring in secondary education(English). I went to Japan for 2 months over the winter 07-08 and always wanted to live there. So in this JET program you get paid to teach in public schools? And is there an education requirement? I wouldnt think they'd let any English speaker teach just because they think they can. Anyways..I'm going to continue watching.

  • you might want to check out the playlist of vlogs on applying to the Program, as they will most likely answer many of your questions - this series of vlogs is for people who are already in the program and preparing to come to Japan.

    Thanks for watching.

  • I just want you living in Japan adventurers to know how we back home wish you the best in your daily life there. We take great interest in vicariously projecting ourselves into your world. My perspective is one of longing to return to my years in Tokyo where every turn was filled with strange awe, yet also difficulty. The Japanese experience has remained in my blood even decades after leaving. I thank you for reminding and educating us.

  • cool - thanks for watching.

I too will soon be watching Japan vlogs from back in America and wistfully thinking of my time here. I want to enjoy it all while it lasts.

  • haha, your nihonglish party sounds like a konpa. ...good times...

  • This is an interesting idea. I have an interview with JET in less than 2 weeks. Do you have any suggestions/advice you could give me?

  • If you go to my main channel page, there is a new playlist with a few recent vlogs all about the interview process. Good luck!

  • thanks man

  • hey man, what is the most amount of years they let you be a jet?

  • 5 years maximum

  • i just recently found your videos and I'm watching them in order, but I am curious, will you stay in Japan as a teacher but not as a JET?

  • I am figuring that out now. It's difficult since the Japanese school year starts in April, but my job with JET doesn't end until July.

I'll post a vlog with my post-JET plans later this year.

  • I'm a current JET applicant for 2009 and its really cool that you made this video. Do you know what they're looking for in people during the screening process and also do you have any tips for the interview itself?

  • thanks for watching and good luck.

I go over a little bit about who they're looking for in my series on "applying" to JET.

I plan on doing vlogs about the interview process this month.

  • I'm a JET hopeful, I still need to get through college and get my bachelor's before I can even begin to plan for JET, but going to Japan has been something I've wanted to do for over a decade now, ever since I first discovered anime wasn't just a different cartoon, it actually came from a different country.

I found this vlog off of the JET forums, actually, someone posted the link, and I sincerely hope that your vlog is consistent, seeing as how it's December and this was posted in May.

  • welcome aboard. :)

I've got over 200 vids, with plenty more on the way. :D

  • Hi, I'm very interested in teaching english in japan for a year (or more!), possibly as a part of the jet program.

The problem is, I'm an asian american, and I've heard there is a hiring bias with a preference for "white faces," in the eikawas if not necessarily in jet. Is this the case?

Have you met any AA's teaching english in Japan? Have they shared any of their experiences with you?

I really want to go, but I'm wondering what kind of obstacles I may face in doing so.

    thank you!

  • I honestly don't think there is any bias against AAs in the hiring process. I flew out of the LA embassy and there were many AA on the plane with me. Once here, your experience might be different than mine, since some people will expect you to speak Japanese if you're Japanese-American, etc.

If you want to come - you should apply! :)

  • If you have student loans after college how do you take care of thoes?

  • I'm currently paying off my loans from Japan. I send money home to my American bank account and pay them online. It's pretty simple.

  • The large amount of schools you teach at makes the work sound demanding. Does it take up a lot of your time?

Are you allowed to have another job at the same time?

Would you even have time for it?

  • many JETs work their expected hours, say 8am to 4pm, and that's about it. How much extra you put into it is really up to you.

You are not allowed to have a 2nd job while working as a JET. You would have time for say night time eikawa classes, and some JETs do teach these with permission from their supervisors.

  • I love your videos, keep going :). I want to be a JET someday.

  • Hi great to see these vids thanks! I am applying now for JET, it would be a dream come true for me to live and work in Japan but I am SO nervous at the moment. Do you have any tips and suggestions for the application process?

  • Good luck.

My application tips vids will start in October.

  • *clicks Subscribe* You got me hooked. Teach me Darth Jason for I am a mere naive Padawan who is interested in coming to the dark side. I figured I would throw that in there due to your Star Wars shirt. Take care.

  • the force is strong in this one...

ok - I gotta stop being such a geek! :D

  • Just watched this first video, it looks like a great series so i cant wait to catch up.

Im going into my second year of uni next term and im hoping to get a Jet position after i finish my 3rd year! it sounds like great fun and cant wait to get there :)

  • glad to have you aboard - thanks for watching!

  • Hi Jason, its Gemma here (ex Hirata and Hamada, now married to Ben!!) Great to see these!! Hope all is well in Shimane, drop us a line and let us know how your getting on! If you ever want to visit Wales and the UK, let us know! xx

  • Hey Gemma! (Like I know all these other Gemmas other than you-LOL)

Shimane is chugging along just fine for the most part. Hope all is well is the UK.

Did you see the CHESS vid I posted? Tell Ben the quiz worked out well. See ya!

  • exactly how hot is it in Okinawa? I am from wisconsin, would i survive or die of heat exhaustion (haha). ^_^

  • I've never been to Okinawa, but I've heard the weather is lovely. Mild winters. I would check a site like Wikipedia for year round temps.

  • I went there on my last deployment. It's not terribly hot, but if you're used to the humid southeastern cost of the United States, you should be fine. We were only there for 4 days and it was during December. I'm not sure how much that means to you, but some information is no information at all right? Take care!

  • How do I get in the program? I should graduate next Summer. I am an African American. Should I be concerned about being accepted in Japan?

  • I'll be making a series of vlogs about applying for JET in the next few months.

  • Thankyou for this series of vlogs. I caught your latest one and just had to come back to the start to catch up.

  • I know you need a university degree to get into the program. What was your degree in? Hopefully ill be graduating in 1 year with my degree so i plan to apply this year. If i dont make my expected graduation date even after going through the rigorous application the entire year, will i be allowed to reapply the following year?

  • It doesn't matter what your BA or BS degree is in. My degree is in American History. (I did minor in Japanese studies)

Yes - you can reapply up to three times.

  • I'm only going into Grade 12 next year, but I can't wait until I get a university degree to apply. =) My friend was accepted this year, and the program sounds amazing~

  • good luck and thanks for watching! :)

  • This is fantastic to see this sort of word of mouth about the JET experience! My sister is actually leaving her 5 year stint as a JET ALT in Shizuoka this July, and she absolutely loved every minute of it and is sad to leave. I remember helping her initially move out there, and her trepidation. Your vlogs will not only help future JETs ease their own trepidations, but also spread the word of this great program! ^_^

  • yeah - it'll be tough for me to leave after 5 years next year. But I may stay in Japan even tho I won't be a JET anymore.

  • Nice man...I was a JET in 2002 in Shiga--We had NONE of this stuff back then...not even a homepage...glad to see communication happenin!

    Cheers!

  • yeah - even when I was coming in 2004, we hardly had anything. With the coming of podcasts and YT, there is a bunch more information available to those JETs that seek it out.

  • I notice you are older than the typical JET. Are you treated differently? Was the application/interview process affected by your age?

  • It's hard for me to say if I'm treated differently, since I only really know how I'm treated, which is by and large very well.

I'm sure it's a little strange for some of my JTEs in their 20s to have an ALT more than 10 years older than them. But I always act like a big kid, so that's more important in a way.

I don't think my age had much impact on my application, other than my maturity and experience helps in the interview. It may have impacted where I was sent, as some BOEs like older JETs.

  • Hey I wil be applying for the JET Programme this year. I pretty much understand how the job itself works but can you suggest a Blog or whatever that goes into detail about Tokyo Orientation? like what happens in those classes at Orientation.

  • i believe the JET Programme main website posts the Orientation schedule each year online, so you can see what seminars are offered. The link is at the end of this video. Good luck! :)

  • This is great! My situation is quite different (I'm married to a Japanese whose English is good enough to where we don't need to speak Japanese all the time), but I do currently live in Osaka, and while I've learned a lot about the culture and etiquette here, my Japanese language learning needs some serious structure. The best I've been able to find has been Nihongo Dekimasu for independent study. Do you have any class suggestions? Thanks for such an informative post! I'm subscribing! ^_^

  • you're very welcome! :)

I ended up hiring a private tutor, as the volunteer-run classes in my local area weren't addressing my learning needs. She is a Japanese woman who lived in America, so her English is also very good.

I'll be making more vlogs about learning Japanese, so stay tuned! :)

  • A lot of good information Thanks for sharing your experiences.

  • you're welcome. :)

    glad you're enjoying the vids!

  • Funny to find you here, aoiahiru!

    yanakin mcleodwalkre

  • Cool video. I plan on watching your other videos. I hope you have some videos of the town of which you live in. Just walking around or driving around and the stores nearby. Nice advice. Can't wait til I become a JET. Still 2 years away before I apply but still can't wait.

  • good suggestion - thanks!

  • Hi Jason! I'm an incoming JET, going to Shimane, Kawamoto this coming August! Will you be in Group A or B for Orientation? I'm in B...really glad to find your vlogs! Very useful indeed! I've made some contact with some of the current jets at the shimane website but most of them are leaving (Lena, Janelle etc), so hoping to make more friends when I'm there! =)

  • Hi! So cool - Shimane is a great place to live. congrats!

I won't be at Tokyo Orientation, but I will be at Shimane Orientation - see you then if not sooner (we have some fun gatherings in August before orientation in late August)

  • Thank you so much for these videos! My question is the following one: can participants be from Spain if they already have a certificate, a degree or experience in teaching English?

    Arigatouuu! xx

  • Yes - I would think you could be a JET. Recently, we've had AlTs in my area from Italy and Norway, and English was their 2nd language. So please check the website I mention at the end of the video and ask at your country's Japanese embassay. Good luck!

  • Question: About how many foreign teachers in all working for the JET program? Nice video..subscribed! Like the Sumo too! Glad to see Asashoryu defeated for a change.

  • Approx. 6000 JETs in Japan this year, from many countries, but primarily America, UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

I heard once that if you count all the American JETs here as a group, then we're 2nd only in size to the American military.

    Thanks for watching!

  • Interesting stats on the JET program. I look forward to more of your vids!

  • Thanks for watching. I plan on interviewing my friend Roger, a 4th year CIR from Australia, to give some insight into the CIR job.

  • This is gonna be really helpful. I have a JET Vlog too, but I'm making videos about my experience. I look forward to watching more of these!

  • Cool - thanks!

  • Great video, looking forward to many more. I'm a new ALT from Denver!

  • I am really interested in these blogs particularly because I am going to be a Jet and shipping off in July so... I want as much information as possible but I do know about ESID I am actually reading the Jet comic... :-p

  • cool! I should post the next vid on Sunday.

  • I am off to Japan. I am a JET, I am so happy

  • Your the man, I can't wait to jet!

  • I'm glad to find your blog. I made the mistake of reading horror stories online like an idiot. Irish JET being shipped out at the end of july and CRAPPING HER PANTS.

  • great - I'm glad you found my vids! :)

I hope they will alleviate some of your worries.

yeah - there is some real negative stuff online about JET, and while I don't want to sugarcoat anything, I will be mostly positive in my upcoming vlogs.

  • Great video. I wish I could be a JET sooner, but just starting college so I got another 3 years or so. Hope this starts a good series. Keep it up Jason-san.

What is ESID though, I guess I need to do more research.

    P.S.

Your shirt rocks. GO STAR WARS!

  • Thanks - got the shirt at last year's SD Comic Con - so yeah, I'm a geek. :)

ESID = Every Situation Is Different

  • Hope to give the JET program a go in a couple years.

I'm pretty sure Comic-con is the best place on earth for those five days. Dig the Batman: TAS poster.

  • Really interesting Vlog, looking forward to the next one. I'm only planing to visit japan not becoming an JET, but It is Very interesting even if I'm not going to become an JET

    Keep up the Good work:)

  • Thanks - I hope to post at least one a week for the next 6 weeks or so.

  • Awesome Vlog there Jason, it is neat to see a everyman view on the program. It does sound exciting.

  • my jose will be leaving august 3rd for orientation, i just posted your vid on his myspace page!

  • Thanks! I hope they are helpful. :)

  • Awesome, thanks for this! I'm not a JET, but I do plan to become one after I graduate... not until 2011 or 2012.

  • great - thanks for checking these out - who knows what will change by then, but some of it should be helpful.

  • Very interesting jason, keep the good work :D cant wait till ur new video :)

  • appreciate it!

  • Good job :)

  • thanks!

  • omoshiro

I'am just wondering is 5 years the max you can stay?

  • Yes - 5 years is the maximum you can stay at the same job as a JET. There is a rule (I think it's still a rule) that allows you to reapply after 10 years, so if you were a JET from age 22-26, you could reapply when you're 36. We had a JET in Shimane a few years ago who did just that.
