@adamgamedude They land 757, 767 and A300 in John Wayne airport KSNA (Orange County) on a 5700 foot (1700m) runway.

Madeira runway is 9110 ft (2781m) long. What's so special about it is the approach path, proximity with high grounds, and the extended section of the runway built on pillars. Not his "short" runway, which is not short whatsoever.

I last went to Madeira in 1997. Lovely place. I saw what looked like work to extend the runway out into the deep sea. In this video i saw what looked like a viaduct with a pile of land at the 'sea end'. can anybody recommend a site where i can read about the airport and its extension. i guess landing and take off there were even more 'dreaded and spectacular' before the extension was built. Anyway, brilliant video posting - thanks.

I flew into Madeira in the mid '70s. I'll never forget it. I thought we would drop off the opposite end for sure... I believe we landed from the opposite direction from what was shown in this video.

The short runway got me ready to brave Portugal's narrow mountain roads being traveled by very wide trucks!

I can help with this My dad went in 1985 before the first airport extension. I went to Madeira in 1988 the airport had been extended. I took a cruise there in 2008 and it is quite a bit longer and much safer then before. I still prefer to go by cruise ship. lol I have family on the island it is a wonderful place.

it's the signal for the pilot to put the throttle controls back to "idle", so the landing gear touches the ground. "retard" means here "to retard" in sense of "to slow down" the engines

Yes there's a cut because during the touchdown the camera was turned off. the direction of the landing is dependent from the direction of the wind.

Airbus aircraft tell you to "retard" the throttles because they do not have servos such as Boeing aircraft which actually move the throttles as the autothrottle does its magic. You have to retard airbus throttles to "reset" them. (very important to do so which is why you're reminded.) :)

We used to visit Madeira all the time before in the late 80's and early 90's. Flying TAP airlines. I remember always being scared flying and landing there! Every landing was so fast and hard, also take off was nuts! The pilot would go to the very edge of the runway, lock up the brakes and give it full power! After 10 or so seconds the pilot would release the brakes (BANG!) and I was pinned to the seat!! That was way before the extension.
