Anita Mui, Faye Wong, Sally Yip, and Sandy Lam are the best female singers of HK, none of the new girls come close. I'm 27 (relatively young I guess) and I can't stand the likes of Sammi. Joey is alright compared to the rest of the newbies (Twins, my god they suck). But even Joey can't compare at all to the top 4.
I like Joey and I love Sally! I've never heard their voices together before and after having heard them sing together it's obvious Joey doesn't have the power and vocal range which Sally has. Till today, I believe Sally has one of the strongest and best voices out there.
The original version of this song sung by Sally and Sammi was much better, pertly because Sammi is far stronger vocally compared to Joey.

I don't think she "tries" too hard to bare all...I think it's just that sally actually just naturally have a very very strong voice..She has always always sung like that...whereas joey has always had a soft voice so sally's voice is heard more clearly...

Although Sally is from an older generation, one of the respected singers, her singing skills isnt as good as Joey Yung. Sally tries to hard to sound powerful, even at times where she shouldnt and she does it too much so it sounds a little bleh. But Joe noes when to be strong and when to soften up which is excellent

Sally's singing skills are definitely more experienced than Joey's, but it doesn't mean Joey's voice is bad. She actually has a decent singing voice compared to other Chinese artists these days. It's hard to really meet the standards of the veteran artists. They were the real epitome of HK singers.

As a voice teacher, do your job. Tell me she purposely struggled on the high notes at 2:12 & 2:30. Sally's voice isn't beautiful anymore; maybe she tries too hard to act powerful. She was great before, but voices change over time. A voice teacher should know that very well.
So put your dreams away of being a voice teacher aside and open your ears. If for some reason you're really a "voice teacher" teach your students well and if they make it to anywhere near Joey, you can curse at her yourself.

I agree with you. Joey is gradually inching her way up, but it's a slow process for her as well as the new artists. Sammi along with Sandy Lam are the only singers in HK who are still players and legends in the Asian entertainment spotlight, with Faye and Sally in partial retirement. In general, I find that the quality of songs have deteriorated in recent years. Listening to Joey is like chugging cheap beer, Sammi is like sipping red wine and Sandy, she's like sipping champagne.
What I meant when I said her voice sounds like Faye Wong is that she sings like using Faye's technique (at least to me). In my opinion Joey is the only good voice in this generation, and I just wish she woulds sing in her full voice like she did with Roman Tam's duet 問誰領風騷. Well, you don't, but plenty of producers in HK do hear that, in studio recording and in live. In fact, one of the most famous producers in HK commented last year that after Faye Wong, he hasn't seen a single female singer who can really sing until the recent 2 years as Joey Yung starts to improve. I'm a fan of Faye Wong for 14 years, and I haven't liked any other singers until I heard Joey live.

Hello? She has been resting for the last two years, how do you expect her to have records or movies??? So when someone is resting, he or she is shit? its a fact sammi cant sing. her live performances bore the hell out of me, she has no stage presence, neither does she seem to have enough air in her lungs to belt out proper phrasing in her songs. and her vibrato sucks. on the otherhand, joey's tone is clean clear and sweet - voice is amazing, she can harmonise and have a good vibrato - not only in her albums but also in a live performance. sammi sounds like a sack of cats being thrown against a wall!

Sammi no stage presence, I think you are blind, she is the only female singer that dares to play with her own image, always suprising fans when she comes out with new albums and concerts. I don't care whether you like her singing or not, but her stage charisma, no one can deny that, just look at how she interacts with fans. From what I see Joey sux when interacting with fans when she just came into business, its only now that she improves alot.
experimenting with hair colour and having ugly eyebrows does not equal stage presence.. sammi plays with her image all the time to 'surprise' her fans because that's all she can offer. she can't sing she can't dance, so what can she do? dye her hair. stage presence does not equal how much you interact with your fans.. its something in your performance which amazes the audience i.e. powerful vocals which moves the audience - something sammi still has to learn from joey
Interacting with fans is also part of the things that make stage presense, I don't think by just singing, you can attract the audience, alot of singers just sing at concerts and they are damn boring, thats the same as Joey's concerts last time, bore me to death...

Sally's singing skills are definitely more experienced than Joey's, but it doesn't mean Joey's voice is bad. She actually has a decent singing voice compared to other Chinese artists these days. It's hard to really meet the standards of the veteran artists. They were the real epitome of HK singers.

As a voice teacher, do your job. Tell me she purposely struggled on the high notes at 2:12 & 2:30. Sally's voice isn't beautiful anymore; maybe she tries too hard to act powerful. She was great before, but voices change over time. A voice teacher should know that very well.
So put your dreams away of being a voice teacher aside and open your ears. If for some reason you're really a "voice teacher" teach your students well and if they make it to anywhere near Joey, you can curse at her yourself.

I agree with you. Joey is gradually inching her way up, but it's a slow process for her as well as the new artists. Sammi along with Sandy Lam are the only singers in HK who are still players and legends in the Asian entertainment spotlight, with Faye and Sally in partial retirement. In general, I find that the quality of songs have deteriorated in recent years. Listening to Joey is like chugging cheap beer, Sammi is like sipping red wine and Sandy, she's like sipping champagne.

What I meant when I said her voice sounds like Faye Wong is that she sings like using Faye's technique (at least to me). In my opinion Joey is the only good voice in this generation, and I just wish she woulds sing in her full voice like she did with Roman Tam's duet 問誰領風騷. Now she's getting worse and in 飆汗 she sings and dances like Jolin... If she would only be herself she would be much better.

Sally has a better vocal; Joey's voice is too weak that Sally's drowns hers out (she sounds out of breathe to me). And I feel that Joey's voice reminds me of Faye Wong's, only in a weaker version.

I don't hear the resemblance to Faye Wong either. Maybe Joey is trying similar techniques as Faye does because Joey is a fan of Faye. Not sure... but I don't think they sound anything alike. I also agree that Sally totally outshines Joey here.

Well, you don't, but plenty of producers in HK do hear that, in studio recording and in live. In fact, one of the most famous producers in HK commented last year that after Faye Wong, he hasn't seen a single female singer who can really sing until the recent 2 years as Joey Yung starts to improve. I'm a fan of Faye Wong for 14 years, and I haven't liked any other singers until I heard Joey live.

its a fact sammi cant sing. her live performances bore the hell out of me, she has no stage presence, neither does she seem to have enough air in her lungs to belt out proper phrasing in her songs. and her vibrato sucks. on the otherhand, joey's tone is clean clear and sweet - voice is amazing, she can harmonise and have a good vibrato - not only in her albums but also in a live performance. sammi sounds like a sack of cats being thrown against a wall!

Sammi no stage presence, I think you are blind, she is the only female singer that dares to play with her own image, always suprising fans when she comes out with new albums and concerts. I don't care whether you like her singing or not, but her stage charisma, no one can deny that, just look at how she interacts with fans. From what I see Joey sux when interacting with fans when she just came into business, its only now that she improves alot.

experimenting with hair colour and having ugly eyebrows does not equal stage presence.. sammi plays with her image all the time to 'surprise' her fans because that's all she can offer. she can't sing she can't dance, so what can she do? dye her hair. stage presence does not equal how much you interact with your fans.. its something in your performance which amazes the audience i.e. powerful vocals which moves the audience - something sammi still has to learn from joey

If you people are going to continue arguing and insulting about Sammi, please take it somewhere else! Sammi has been resting for the past few years and she also came out of failed relationships. Joey just seems to be rasping on her voice and these days it's never about ability or substance. Even the Overseas Chinese communities know what Sammi has that Joey doesn't and Sammi is a lot more respected by the International audience. Maybe she needs some guidance from Teresa Carpio again.
