amazing touch and feel on his chops, but it is hard to win with that style i think, and he lost on this day. the modern defense (e.g., joo se hyuk) is a much more winnable style....but offense is even better...and being able to play both is the best!
Mr. Takahashi was very rare Japanese player who could use both fore and back hand then. Almost all Japanese player like Mr. Tanaka, Ito, Hasegawa were forehand player and very slow style to win.
Takahashi is one of three Japanese player who won Zhang Ce Tong, a great player in China.
@tricon7 yeah, these guys didnt take table tennis as seriously as people today and therefore they enjoy the game and smile and giggle a lot more. It makes me feel as i competition got too competitive and out of character.
@tricon7 - Most of that has to do with Zhang's chopping style. Look at choppers today on youtube, it's much slower than the typical offensive, even at elite levels. When people come over and watch my family play, if one of us is playing defensive and putting a lot of back and/or side spin on the ball, it won't look as impressive to the unititiated, but it's every bit as difficult. If they doubt, you just hand them the racket and let them try to return a chop anywhere but into the net.

It's amazing how much slower these guys are compared to today. It makes me wonder what the game is going to be like 10 or 20 years from now.
