To all of you critical of this performance I can only say how sorry I feel for you. This is the greatest singer of the 20th century giving his all to music that is inspired by the most divine creative sources. Brahms would've been more than pleased, so if some of you pseudo-cognoscenti need to show your ignorance by berating DFD, do so. You'll still be nothing but ignorant losers.
It's typical of DFD to deliver oratorio text in an unusually engaged manner. But, at age 64, with a voice that's thinning out, he's overcompensating, I think. He retired four years after this performance, abruptly. I treasure all videos of his singing. He was spellbinding in live performance!
@mbouman I think you are entirely correct about overcompensating. Well came to the same conclusion and retired soon after. I heard him only late in his career - late eighties in Feldkirch with Schubert and in Zurich once with Kindertotenlieder. I was devasted afterwards... spellbinding is a good term! :-)
so much facial expression, almost like scenical; that is rare.
on the other hand, no one would these days be 'acting' shamelessly with the score in his hand. The acting + singing more than compensates of course... 3:02 - 3:16

The choir is amazing... FiDi is trying to hard. His technic is perfect but I can not take him seriously.
