I'm not sure what this reporter is trying to prove ? Everyone already knows the economy is bad as it is all over and everyone already knows detroit has some gaps along woodward but there are at least as many places open for business as there are vacant areas and much of the corridor is coming back like the growth of wsu and the medical center along with a few new shopping areas even in highland park. If detroit had a better transit system it would boost regrowth imo.

In Baltimore where I live, which introduced a light rail that runs from the north of the city through the downtown, much like the planned Woodward route, we found that there was no significant savings or rider patronage increase on the light rail over traditional bus routes. What we also found is that crime doubled and in some areas tripled in upscale middle class areas as the crooks found the light rail system a convenient and hard-to-track entry/exit route.
Lets be brutally honest here, building a light rail right now is dumb. You just don't have the density or population to support this line as of 2011. Light rail works when it becomes a pain to park your car. Have you seen all the parking lots downtown?
A new light rail system will benefit municipal employees in Detroit. More jobs will open up for city workers, both to build the system and to run it until the money runs out. There will also be plenty of opportunities for kickbacks and graft.

Anybody who says that Detroit already has a light rail “the people mover” is so out of touch which the city. The PM only goes around the central business district. B/c it doesn’t go beyond downtown to any of the actual neighborhoods nobody can use it to commute, its only a light rail for tourists. How can anybody expect the city to turn around when it doesn’t even have the transportation infrastructure that cities half its size have!
Take it from someone who has lived in Detroit her entire life. Yes Detroit has its thriving areas, but in all actuality its a pit of destruction. Schools, communities, buildings and such are abandoned, especially in the "Ghettos" where I grew up. Crime is RIDICULOUS here and no one seems to care or put effort into making it a better place. No transit system is needed. Put that money toward the rebuild of Detroit.
These videos are false and misleading, it pisses me off! We traveled all the way to Detroit to see the great city of ruins and the great land of abandoned blocks, just to find an ordinary city: alive, thriving and happy. Parties are everywhere. Detroit isn’t all abandoned city blocks as portrayed in these videos. You have to look long and hard to find these areas. Yes, they do exist, blocks of abandoned properties, but they’re areas of ‘reconstruction’ which isn’t being shown in these videos.
I think NYC is the best example of a successful city. Look at it, most visited city in North America, strongest in the world, has always held in there. If you looked at pictures in the 70s and 80s, NYC looked just like Detroit. But then by the 90s it cleaned up and it's looking better now, and it's crime has been on one of it's lowest in decades. Screw Los Angeles and Chicago, they've both always been ghetto hellholes. New York I think will always survive.

I thought public hearings related to bus service cuts or city budget cuts that would impact bus service have been pretty well attended. Does that not signify high priority?
Being that everything major is on Woodward, and in combination with the people mover this could prove to be effective.....but 500 million dollars!!! and it only suits those from the northern (weathier) suburbs. It is a sound way to ensure Red Wings, Tigers, and Lions fans have easier access to the game and switches the cost of parking to the cost of a train ticket. underwhelming for sure.

Why aren't there any shots of Wayne State, the Detroit Institute of Arts, Medical Center, Orchestra Hall, Amtrak Station or Fisher Building which would be connected with the downtown area of Fox Theatre, Campus Martius, Cobo Center, Comerica Park and the People Mover.
The second phase will connect neighborhoods including the city Highland Park.

LoL....Infrastructure building works if you are expanding the production curve but you must first have production to expand the curve. That goes for any infrastructure transportation project. The savings associated with production are then reinvested which increases the ability to increase volume which pays for the project. But this project like many others around the country isn't about this. It is about lining the pockets of the companies building it and banks underwriting it.

So the bottom line is detroit is still a large city and woodward the main corridor with plenty of population over all AND it's a no brainer the city needs a transit system other wise it wouldn't have buses, duh. It's also old news that the buses haven't been doing a good job, so why not replace it or add a transit system that will do a better job ??? Then that transit system would help boost redevelopment because more people would and could commute through these areas which = a boost.

I'm not sure what this reporter is trying to prove ? Everyone already knows the economy is bad as it is all over and everyone already knows detroit has some gaps along woodward but there are at least as many places open for business as there are vacant areas and much of the corridor is coming back like the growth of wsu and the medical center along with a few new shopping areas even in highland park. If detroit had a better transit system it would boost regrowth imo.

Again, transit is one of the cornerstones to growth and progress.

I dunno. A monorail (such as the People Mover) if expanded to ALL the major roads (warren grand river gratiot the mile roads) COULD spur development. They could at long last put supermarkets and restaurants at the stations.

In Baltimore where I live, which introduced a light rail that runs from the north of the city through the downtown, much like the planned Woodward route, we found that there was no significant savings or rider patronage increase on the light rail over traditional bus routes. What we also found is that crime doubled and in some areas tripled in upscale middle class areas as the crooks found the light rail system a convenient and hard-to-track entry/exit route.

A new light rail system will benefit municipal employees in Detroit. More jobs will open up for city workers, both to build the system and to run it until the money runs out. There will also be plenty of opportunities for kickbacks and graft.
Makes perfect sense - considering who it was that came up with the idea.

B/c it doesn’t go beyond downtown to any of the actual neighborhoods nobody can use it to commute, its only a light rail for tourists. Schools, communities, buildings and such are abandoned, especially in the "Ghettos" where I grew up. Crime is RIDICULOUS here and no one seems to care or put effort into making it a better place. No transit system is needed. Put that money toward the rebuild of Detroit.

We traveled all the way to Detroit to see the great city of ruins and the great land of abandoned blocks, just to find an ordinary city: alive, thriving and happy. Parties are everywhere. Detroit isn’t all abandoned city blocks as portrayed in these videos. You have to look long and hard to find these areas. Yes, they do exist, blocks of abandoned properties, but they’re areas of ‘reconstruction’ which isn’t being shown in these videos.

I think NYC is the best example of a successful city. Look at it, most visited city in North America, strongest in the world, has always held in there. If you looked at pictures in the 70s and 80s, NYC looked just like Detroit. But then by the 90s it cleaned up and it's looking better now, and it's crime has been on one of it's lowest in decades. Screw Los Angeles and Chicago, they've both always been ghetto hellholes. New York I think will always survive.

Public transportation in Detroit is a joke, and frankly the city doesn’t stand a chance at coming back if it doesn’t have basic transportation infrastructure. Also keep in mind that the light rail plans they showed in the video is only faze 1 of the project. When more money can be raised it will be extended to serve more areas. You have to start somewhere.

These days, just about every other major city has some kind of rapid transit. It's not just something for Chicago or New York anymore.
I thought public hearings related to bus service cuts or city budget cuts that would impact bus service have been pretty well attended. Does that not signify high priority?

Being that everything major is on Woodward, and in combination with the people mover this could prove to be effective.....but 500 million dollars!!! and it only suits those from the northern (weathier) suburbs. It is a sound way to ensure Red Wings, Tigers, and Lions fans have easier access to the game and switches the cost of parking to the cost of a train ticket. underwhelming for sure.

How can anyone say this won't go anywhere? Why aren't there any shots of Wayne State, the Detroit Institute of Arts, Medical Center, Orchestra Hall, Amtrak Station or Fisher Building which would be connected with the downtown area of Fox Theatre, Campus Martius, Cobo Center, Comerica Park and the People Mover.
The second phase will connect neighborhoods including the city Highland Park.

But Reason needs to answer what the priority should be for transportation funded by taxpayer money, more crumbling roads that encourage sprawl and strain resources or investments that encourage density to make cities walkable and not require a car to get everywhere.

Detroit is a preview of the future the rest of America faces if we don,t get manufacturing back into the United States. It really bothers me that most types of consumer electronics and other durable goods are not even made here anymore and factories are being turned into expensive lofts! Wake up! We cant survive as a nation selling our houses to eachother!

A major percentage of the stuff in Wal-Mart, the $2/$5 discount store varieties could be made in America. LoL....Infrastructure building works if you are expanding the production curve but you must first have production to expand the curve. That goes for any infrastructure transportation project. The savings associated with production are then reinvested which increases the ability to increase volume which pays for the project. But this project like many others around the country isn't about this. It is about lining the pockets of the companies building it and banks underwriting it.

@ChulaKirby What you’re saying is very logical but Detroit is in a unique situation it used to be home to a thriving auto industry. The city needs to improve its infrastructure to make it relevant to the private sector again, and reattract the jobs that it lost. Will a bank make some money off the project maybe but the citizens will gain also, and frankly I’m more concerned about Wall Street gambling away 401ks and mortgages then I am about a rail project lets get real here

I have news for you. Detroit is royally screwed if they think the once auto thriving industry will return because they put in a rail system. ROFL It doesn't work that away. The private sector doesn't look and say let's move our businesses there, they have a light rail system. LoL Wall Street underwrites the bonds for what ever project you want. That doesn't mean the project will make money or pay for itself. The taxpayers will be left holding the bag after others make a killing building it.

That is what is implied when the politicians sell these projects to the general public. Yes the city is in DESPERATE NEED of investment but no major industry will invest there so build all the light rails you want. It isn't going to happen. This is an example of why. Crony and state capitalism using failed Keyensian policies very similiar to china's state capitalism and policies. The politicians can't fix the problem because THEY are the problem. This video demonstrates that also.
