You know what each fret sounds like, therefore theres no point to practice scales if you already know what each fret sounds like. Then you just play what melodies come to your head. Yea in his book he may know the names of some scales because he was 40 something when he wrote, hes in his 20's here, very mature player compared to himself now.

@Musicmaker703 I know what he meant, I have heard from many experienced guitar players that scales are tools but you never have to base everything on them or your melody will never be soulful it will be like prefabricated ones.... so you have to learn by ear to know every sound of the guitar (which its pretty hard) and then you will be able to copy genuinely every sound that comes through your head, thats something that many guitarists dont realize and thats why slash sounds so unique....

I noticed when he did that little impro section at 3:45 he was actually playing the notes of the a minor pentatonic, so he does know the scales. I find it hard to believe he could of writ all the classic solos without the knowledge of scales, especially like sweet child o mine solo which incorporates the harmonic and a bunch of other scales

I think its important to practice scale patterns; you can't practice scales forever because then your just gonna sound like Michael Angelo Batio.

That being said, Scales are important when your learning, though I think, especially next to a metronome, because it is very helpful to building speed, endurance, and getting yourself comfortable with the neck and your right hand with the spacing between the strings. Blues is not about scales its more about feeling.

Blues requires scales as well, because without vast knowledge of scales it just sounds like generic pentatonic blues (Slash). Now theres nothing wrong with generic pentatonic blues but it gets repetitive.
