  • this song sux we are men in mulan i best Disney song lrn 2 pl4y scrubs

  • "Disney hired vaudeville and radio actor James Baskett to portray Remus" - I hate to read the credits and not see who sings a tune. Credit here goes to James Baskett.

  • He must be SOOOOOOOO HIGH!

  • Back when Disney always had ideas, gave it their all, and didn't have to rally on Pixar to make good movies.

  • I just like this song, man.

  • Despite all the controversy, this film won an Oscar and an honorary award to James Baskett.

  • This is racist against bluebirds.

  • The people arguing over this video are the true racists.

  • a black man being portrayed as being happy - such blatant racist insensitivity! clearly a black man had to be nothing but miserable if there was slavery! and he has a big nose?? it is obviously anti-semitic too! and the mouse logo bouncing up and down on the words are clearly a swipe at the president's big ears! so it's anti-obama too! and then the black boy running happily behind the white boy and girl?? clearly this is demonstrative of white supremacy!

  • Can you say "hand basket"? Oh, did I mention it's going to hell? Several of my black friends take no offense to this...it's the extremists from the NAACP. GET OVER IT! It's time we move together and forge a new future...and if a Disney movie bothers you that much...I have a #10 cast iron skillet with you name on it ...just waiting for you. I am sorry and aplogize...Walt would not like this...he wanted everybody to get along...sharing love and happiness!

  • THIS IS SO CUTE!

  • i didnt know this was a real song!!!!

  • love it

  • I have no idea why this is considered racist...A beatiful movie will never be seen again...because of a few miltants!!

  • I've never seen this movie but i know this song, Disney just has a way of getting you know matter what ay?

  • This is a childhood memory for me. And anyone who is truly racist can go fuck themselves with a coat hanger.

  • Allow me to educate the mass of ignorance on this page.

This video is considered racist because of Paternalistic treatment towards slaves. Slave owners ACTUALLY THOUGHT that their slaves were happy on the plantation, and that without slavery, black people would be NOTHING. Slave owners thought they were doing them a favor. The slaves brave enough to run away to the north were assumed to have a mental illness, and if your slaved showed any of the signs, you simply beat it out of them.

  • You know I remember once hearing Dave Chappelle saying in his stand-up, "don't ever be the first black guy to do something." Now I realize that he was absolutely right. James Baskett (the actor here and friend of Walt Disney) won an academy award for this song, the first black guy to ever do so, but he didn't even get to go the premier of the movie because Georgia was segregated by law and he couldn't go into a white theatre.

  • Another reason the south is so awesome.

  • ohmigosh! i remember this! but i can't remember for the life of me what show/movie this was from...

  • I haven't smiled so big in a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time!

  • You can purchase an unedited dvd copy that does play in the united states for about 13.00 at ioffer.com the word zippidy means to zip out your middle finger and doo dah is an old fashioned term for black uncles. Uncle remus was actually singing fuck you nigger fuck you ey niggers are inferior in every way

  • @remusnigga you're just jealous cos you have a tiny dick and your momma likes to suck on mine all day

  • this makes me smile

  • This makes me happy :)

  • Interesting that they didn't release this film on VHS, but they released the song on a sing-along video (actually two I think- I remember having one as a kid that had different film to the song)

  • @Altoclarinets I have the VHS, but in italian, and it's an old one. But now it's considered racist here too

  • Dumbo is just as racist as Song of the South, and they haven't banned that movie. They need to release this film properly.

  • I love this song... What was it featured on.. I can't remember .

  • He won an academy award for this.

    James Baskett:

Born: February 16, 1904; Indianapolis, IN

Died: July 9, 1948; Los Angeles, CA (Age 44)

  • I saw this when I was a little boy (a little white boy, BTW), and I remember loving the character and thinking he was so much like my grandpa who had died recently. I told mom and she said she was thinking the same thing - he was just like her daddy ... who was as white and Irish as can be, but he was a round, happy older man who smiled a lot and sang occasionally. I guess the movie guy was black. *shrug* we just saw my grandpa and Mom's daddy. 'course, we lived in the South, in the 60s then.

  • Back in the day this might not have been necessarily racist to some people so lighten up. :)

  • 1:28

How crazy did this guy look during the filming of the video?

  • Comment removed

  • I don't care if some people find this racist, I never did. I just enjoyed the song. Hell the ride at Disney World was fun. This is a better song than It's a Small World.

  • The reason that this song in particular is considered racist is because it is derived from a "blackface" minstrel song called "Zip Coon". These "blackface" minstrel songs were parodies of the way that African Americans' sang and danced and were performed by white people with their faces painted black pre-civil war. This song is a representation of the oppression that African Americans faced, so take that as you may, either be offended or enjoy it for what it is, but don't be ignorant of the past

  • @pepjrp

I already know that. Other people just say that. It's not like it's illegal for african-americans to sing or act.

James Baskett even got an award for his singing in "Song of the South". Too bad he isn't alive. He's one of the best actors and singers.

  • 1:34 I could swear that was Bernie Mac!

  • Anyone who finds this racist isn't allowed on Splash Mountain -_-

  • as a black man I don't find it racist but then again i haven't seen it since i was a kid.. but if people are offended by it who are you to say they shouldn't be

  • @reciboi But then how is this racist at all ?????? nothing is worng with a black guy singing

  • What year is this supposed to be?

  • is this disney?

  • Uncle remus is a stinky old pedophile nigger and the tar baby is his bastard son! Yes suhhhhhhhh!

  • Dang that sure is one happy colored fella..........WAIT A SECOND!!!!!!!! Did he just call that bird blue??!?!?! Damn straight this picture is racist that black fellow just called that bird BLUE. WTF!!!!!! This is a crazy world we live in.

  • Doo Dah Day.

  • I used to sing this all the time as a kid.

  • First African American to win an Oscar people this man singing this song^

  • you people are all trolls just SHUT THE FUCK UP and enjoy the song

  • anyone else remember the disney sing-a-long with the dogs when they used to sing this song :$ ?

  • way better than CGI and 3D HD shit together

  • Why racist? People! You can't erase the history. Black people did not have much rights. And i think this is a nice movie.

  • ^.^

  • Beezow Doo Doo Zopittybopbopbop

  • Why is this pretty much banned in America but yet Gone With The Wind is seen as a wonderful classic film....

  • The only thing remotely offensive is the black kid tripping over the log. Because we all know that black people are more physically agile than that.

  • I think the black kid fell on accident there o.o

  • When the you see the kids skipping together, you can kind of see the order of gender/racial treatment: first white me, then white women, and then black men trailing behind

  • @tofulady41815 maybe they should edit this to make it pc by having the black kid rub his black balls all over the camera, like todays current media.

  • Racist??? NO...It's a damn good kids movie. We all grew with the stories of Ber Rabbit & Ber Fox. It shows the way things were for Blacks @ that time in America. It was a Bad time in this country, but I think it shows how much things have changed for the better. If we forget the lessons of the past , we are doomed to repeat them. Think about how Muslims are treated in this country. Do we hate them all because of the actions of a few? Do we hate all whites because of the actions of a few? Think..

  • Why is this fim considered racist? I guess it's just terrible to have a film that tells the hard truth that blacks were slaves and that at least one old man found a way to be happy in spite of it and loved a white child and taught him a lot of things about life. It's hard to even buy this film in America anymore thanks to the politically correct, moronic Nazi thug types.

  • @heartfire451 To be fair, it was put out at a time when civil rights for blacks was a current event, and of course the person who played Uncle Remus was banned from going to the screening... because he was black.

  • @heartfire451 great comment and so true. I loved this movie as a kid, growing up in Boston

  • @heartfire451 Agreed whole heartedly. However, this movie takes place AFTER the civil war so all of the blacks are free, so its no wonder why they're happy! Unfotunately the movie doesn't make this very clear, so a lot of people get the wrong impression that all of the blacks in the movie are happy slaves.

  • @heartfire451 it's considered racist because of the word Tar baby.

  • @jadedrain The Tar Baby is a baby that is literally made out of tar. What else were you going to call it?

  • @heartfire451 especially considering the film was meant to take place after the civil war and all the blacks were just servants living on the plantation. Why else would Uncle Remus just be able to leave the plantation of his own accord like he did near the end of the film. This movie really needs to be restored and resold.

  • @heartfire451 It's not that it's racist. It's that the protagonist smokes a pipe; hence children that watch this might be convinced that smoking is a good idea.

  • @TheMightyKing100 Well, the kids are going to fall to peer pressure and snort drugs, which is worse, anyway. They'd jump off a cliff if they're friends told them to, it is independence they need to be taught. I doubt they knew smoking was bad when this movie was made, not to mention a pipe is more healthy and cheaper in comparison to smoking a cigarette.

  • @heartfire451 That's exactly the point. The black character created here is a fabricated stereotype, to make people believe black people were happy working on the plantations. Look up blackface, minstrelsy and black archetypes. America created this stereotype as a way of justifying slavery. If the black man is happy on the plantation, there isn't a problem is there?

  • @EmmelineBT Sigh. He isn't actually a slave. The clue in the movie is that he isn't actually a slave. You may as well complain that Dick Van Dyke's cockerney chimerney sweep in Mary Poppins is an insult to the Victorian proletariat, or something.

This is part of America's culture. This time and place developed major musical forms that became blues, jazz, gospel, etc. It's part of history. People really need to get over it.

  • @jaxxstraw I never said he was a slave did I. I was explaining why it was seen as racist. Never once did I complain about it. If I didn't like it I wouldn't be here would I...

  • @heartfire451 Agree. Remember the old saying about how those who forget history are doomed to repeat it? That's exactly what's going to happen if the PC police keep outlawing things.

  • @heartfire451 This is difficult to buy because it is owned by Disney. They have a "vault" system of limiting the purchase of all of their movies. "Beauty and the Beast" are about to go back into the "vault" and purchases of those CDs will not be available through Disney. I am a liberal and have never heard anyone take objection to this movie as being "racist". It is an example of the truth of history, and I know of no one who wants to erase that. We just don't want to repeat that history.

  • @susiebell1017

Actually, this movie was ripped from the shelves and is probably going to be in "the vault" permanently =[ It's one of my favorite Disney classics, and I'm quite liberal as well...

  • this is a the first I ever I learned to song.

  • @audreywolk i mean sing

  • As yes. Thanks for reminding me why I hate white people.

  • @Maafa1619 Congratulations. You're just as much a racist as the "white people" you hate. Thank you for continuing the cycle of hatred you hate so much with your ignorance.

  • @Rakkoz You have taken leave of your senses if you think that I give a fraction of a fuck about your uninformed ruminations about racism. Go fuck yourself.

  • @Maafa1619 I bet the only "non racist" videos are when a bunch of black dudes gangfuck a white chick.

  • My dad used to sing this to my brothers every morning when he came in to wake us up :D

  • Will you people shut up about the racisim stuff, whatever it is, When I watched this that never came across my mind until idiots on you tube with there commets.

  • LOG RIDE YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • ahBoom! 1:38

  • I loved Uncle Remus as a kid! I wanted him to come round and tell me stories lol... I watched this film over and over again :)

  • R.I.P James Baskett

  • I watched this movie for the first time today. So cute:)

  • @waldoman7 You need to go back to school,,the Americans didn't win the war,,it was the Allies,,,and lets not forget that your "cream of the crop"Rockefellers et-al wanted to join Hitler when he was kicking our arse !!

  • the dude looks like uncle phil

  • Disney needs to go back to its roots. This is a fine, wonderful movie, it brings back a lot of wonderful memories. Politically correct be damned, I'm tired of politically correct, this is history, it happened, slavery was wrong we all know that but to refuse to allow this movie to be remastered for dvd is ridiculous.

  • I've been all over the world twice. And Disneyworld is my favourite place in the whole world. I went back in 2007.It was wonderful.I would go every year if i could. I want to go back so bad

  • why do his hands look white? Did they extra darken his face? I wouldn't put it past them.

  • Also, a movie which shows African Americans as slaves during the Civil

war era isnt racist. People forget this movie was set in a time where it is known that unfortunately black people worked for white people as they weren't given the same opportunities and treatments as white people. This movie shows that.

In the beginning, Disney was not a "kids brand". Adults were just as excited to see new movies as it was very née to them to see colourful cartoons which told stories on a big screen.

    Peo

  • @MelissaLovesMakeup89 I totally agree. Showing slaves isn't racist anymore than showing a movie where European Americans are victims of interracial crime. All of these things happened or are happening. It's true to life.

  • Political correctness or not, the animation/live action mix in this movie was ahead of it's time for the 1940s. This song is known by everyone and it's about being happy. No bad message there. I feel that what occurred in cinema 60+ years ago should my be argued anymore. No one who worked on the picture is alive anymore to tell tier story.

  • the animation is already so brilliant, it is a shame that this will never be remasterd for blu ray. I guess I will have to make do with my bootleg :(

  • Political correctness killed the legacy of this movie along with many others. People in general have a wild hair about anything they can remotely call racist. Get a life folks. This is a classic.

  • No matter how pissed or upset i am this song will always make me feel happy inside. P.S. 2:00. the sound they use when they scan your ticket at disneyland.

  • i HATE disney but this one disney movie i love. i love love love it!

  • I miss this song

  • Face at 1:39 is awesome.

  • Just cause he is a funny looking happy go lucky black american doesn't mean its damn racist! I love this song!! :-) Makes me feel good!

  • The only racist thing here are the people who think this is racist.

  • @117ty Thats true. This isn't racist. I love this part!

  • @117ty the old version was

  • @117ty I agree there is nothing racist about the Song of the South if anything it's about tolerance.

  • What a happy fuckin tune

  • Standards change.,I don't think Disney meant any harm at the time.

  • @deriter64 Yes, of course you're right, Disney was a very smart man, and was well aware of the issue! You have to ignore the people here that just blurt out "RACISM, RACISM", sure, slavery stinks beyond heaven itself, but, those Blacks living on plantations were less capable of living free, than a 10, or 12 year old white boy would! Lincoln knew that the Blacks couldn't be simply freed,, they needed education, and training skills to live free, and that was not the case! Thanks!

  • damn i think hes speed ballin

  • what is this tape called? TELL ME NOW!!

  • *Inhale*

Ahhhh I love the smell of nostalgia in the morning.

  • Well, RASCIST OR NOT, I LOVE THIS SONG... The harmony in it from the animals is unsurpassable. You can't richer harmony than what them hummingbirds were giving.

  • *kid

  • The black tripped. Thats racist

  • cant we watch a disney movie with out talking about race????

  • This. Movie. Is. Not. Racist. Seriously. It should be released on DVD. Brer Fox is awesome, Brer Bear is dumb witted, and Brer Rabbit is funny. I've always wanted to go on Splash Mountain, maybe next time I will.

  • I SEE NO COLOR , I SEE PEOPLE FOR WHAT IS INSIDE OF THEM!!!

  • NO WAY IS THIS MOVIE RACIST!! IT WAS FUN!!! THAT'S ALL!!! DON'T KNOW WHY PEOPLE HAVE TO RUIN SUCH GREAT MOVIES!!!!

  • The reason this movie was deemed racist was because of the reality parts of it, not the cartoon parts. It is because they portrayed the black people as slaves. However, I personally don't see why it is racist anyway. Because that was how it was back then. This movie can be fun for children and a perfect learning opportunity about how it was like back then. Although, I suppose certain people don't feel that way since it ended up being banned.

  • Watch at 1:36, look at his eyes ;D

  • Love this song! :) THe reason so many ppl do consider the film inappropriate is that the African American ppl depicted (antebellum south, we presume) are depicted as happy in their circumstances--not exactly an accurate representation. THough we all prefer to see a movie that makes us feel happy! :)

  • @MissLaurieD Many Blacks used their slave situation for the best they could, & many Blacks were treated "very well" & were loved by their "so-called masters" I hate to even use the word, "master!". More than 90% of Blacks then weren't schooled, and couldn't function as regular citizens, even if they WERE free! They were 3rd generation at this time! It was a bad, sad era! But, this song makes "Lemonade" out of the "Lemons" that were handed these lovely souls! Remus was so likeable!

  • @geetarnut

madness. if it was so great, why was there a need for laws to hold them there? At any rate I'd rather be free in hell than a slave in heaven.

  • @waldoman7 I see you missed every word I said! Here's the deal, slavery was already in existence for 100 years or so, ok? Now, the Blacks were all unschooled, couldn't read or take on jobs requiring even basic education, got it? If you freed them, they'd be much worse off, a fact! The harm was already done! That's why Lincoln wanted to transport them to Islands that had educated Blacks already were! Sure we hate slavery,, hate,, is not enough! Transitioning, carefully, is the answer!

  • @geetarnut

possible that I misunderstood your intent. I apologize.

  • @waldoman7 No problem friend,, it's a sad story,, makes me cry sometimes. But, this song, and the beautiful attitude of Remus, his humble beauty, makes me feel as HIS slave, because he actually is superior to me! God is watching everything, even though we feel alone! He loves humble, and peaceful people, and Remus, although just a fictional character, represents real people, just like him! And I bow, very very low, to these Kings! Take care!

  • @geetarnut

eh, humility of that sort is overratted. it is a self denial. I tend to avoid those that sort of thing even if it comes with a few perks. My philosophy is more positive, more about feeding and freeing our natural good nature than in suppressing anything. Pride, passion, and ambition need to be focused rather than removed. A simple and humble life in a world as full of evils as ours is a sin. One must be active. To peacefully accept this place is wrong.

  • @waldoman7 No, the humility I speak of is supreme to pride, passion and ambition! You seem to not understand,, these people, were mentally hurt, as well as being physically detained! At that EXACT time "revolting" would hurt them badly, ending in death! As is what happened to the leader of the African revolt, at Charleston! They hung ALL of them! give you an example! A prisoner, wrongfully in jail, should do what? Break out? Certainly NOT! He needs to let matters play out! Best thing

  • @geetarnut

White America was an enemy with overwhelmingly superior force but far more moveable minds. Clearly the wise tactics there were peaceful ones. Speak, write, recruit for your cause. Yet just because the best tool isn't a gun doesn't mean you don't fight, and if fighting had been a viable option I'd absolutely support it. Slavery should not be tolerated.

  • So, why is this regarded as racist? Is it racist to portray a black person enjoying a sunny day and being cheery? Didn't think so...

  • The De Castro Sisters of "Teach Me Tonight" fame provided the background voices.

  • I've got to turn this into my ringtone!

  • i remember this as a young child. it brought joy and happiness then and it brings joy and happiness now. <3

  • @JDwelle605 song of the south

  • So much nostalgia!! What movie is this?!

  • @JDwelle605 song of the south

  • how is this racist?

  • 86 people are not have a good day

  • HAHA I had this tape!!! someone stole it. I remember the "and a Cowboy needs a hat, and some fancy spurs..." And i love when the kid trips in this!

  • I used to love this song so much and I still do!! Disney really is the best. Always bringing joy into our hearts~

  • Awww, James Baskett. Wonderful man :)

  • This will always remind me of Splash Mountain at Disneyland/Disneyworld because waiting in line for it was the only time I was able to hear this song. And even then it still fills me with happiness.

  • This is awesome! I love this Disney classic!! And for the record I don't see ANYTHING racist about this video. I'm not racist and happy to see the white kids playing with the little black boy. :)

  • @blueshirt1983 I agree :) I grew up watching Disney classics, and this in no way is racist.

  • whybdoes he say why is mr blue bird

  • Disney was trying to give and show dignity and respect in this classic

  • Can't believe this guy couldn't go to the premier of his own film, just because of his race!

  • @20000000000011 What?! That is disgusting! What is wrong with society?!

  • LOL at 2:21

  • 86 people have no soul

  • Racist? No. Awesome as hell. Yes! It's only racist if your a racist person when you watch this.

  • Just pay attention to what he's saying b4 jumping into the song., he's speaking as a slave in the south! Also he's walking and singing to the birds and animals because he's in the "fields" and slaves would sing and rhyme to take their minds off of the labor!

  • @MisterR82 It's a Disney moive no one is being racist , you people love to start dramma over nothing its a little kids song and people need to grow the hell up, and yes aferican americans voices are different then others french people are different than spanish , hes not talking like a slave!?

  • @Kemonoaya: You have to pay attention to the underlying context for which is being represented or implied rather on. It'd take waaaay to long to explain... But TRUST ME, it's there. The whole thing was, discrimination was a way of life here. ("So let's undertone the stereotypes to these niggers since they're dumb!") That was these morons mentality when they made scenes like this.

  • @MisterR82 No No No, I'll admit there is racism, it was apart of that time. The only racism I saw though was when that little boy was following the two white kids singing.

  • @5683venus The racism I saw was where MisterR82 used the N-word.

  • @MisterR82 You don't need to use the N-word... no one wants to here that trash. You can make your point without using racist words.

  • Comment removed

  • lol i only kid guys

  • that was lovely, NOW STOP SINGING BOI AND GET BACK TO WORK!!!! THAT COTTON AIN'T GONNA PICK ITSELF!!!!

  • I'm 63 and I still love this song.

  • Wow they made the black kid in the back of the line....

  • @jazenhearse

the white boy was at the front, followed by the white girl then the black boy

    black girls weren't even represented

  • @BlueLeopard200 Huh... I didn't see any Native Americans, Asians, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, or Middle Eastern kids either.

  • I'm just 15 years old, but if I will have children one day, they will grow up with the true disney films instead of the fuck of today...

  • @SasaGrinsekekz So your going to teach your kids through early disney films that Black people are second class and work for white people?

  • @htlcody No one teaches them nor does this movie show that Blacks currently are second class...it teaches that they once were. Big, big difference.

  • @htlcody No she's going to teach them that you're an idiot.

  • @htlcody

    No, not really.

I have grown up (?) with this film and i do not think so.

To be honest: I never understood it.

I just saw happy people. I didnt thought about "maybe their life is hard" or something like this. (Children never think about things like this?)

In my opinion the film just shows happy black people and a rich white family.

    No racism.

  • Disney is the only company ballsy enough to release a film ACTUALLY addressing the horrible problem of racism while it was going on while everyone else ignored it. This is a great film.

  • His facial acting reminds me of Bernie Mack :)

  • @kxmode Great point as I saw the same thing.... very similar to Bernie Mack.

  • I still sing this song from my youth, and I'm 67 yrs old. This song was and is an inspiration at any time, regardless of the mood your in.

  • i dont remember this!! i never grew up with this movie :S
