To be honest it falls down to taste. I mean Tw****t is a good example of that. I personally prefer things that have more kick to them than this music, which is why I don't agree with the whole "this is what metal should sound like" statement, but I do believe these guys are badass. It's a matter of personal taste.

We have decent bands in the US and even though Slayer is good, in my humble opinion, I'd have to rank them behind Anthrax, Overkill and Manowar. Yes "Gladiator" is one of their best songs IMO. That whole album smoked. This one (Walk the earth) I thought was kind of weak compared to the previous two albums. DC Cooper doesn't sound in top form here. He gave a much better performance on the last Steel Seal album.
